Release date set for Indiana film Harrison Ford in Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark Harrison Ford in Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost ArkArchaeologist action hero Indiana Jones will return to the big screen on 22 May 2008, Paramount Pictures has said.

The announcement means the movie will open on Memorial Day weekend in the US, as the previous two Jones films did.

Shooting is due to start in June 2007, with Harrison Ford returning in the whip-cracking title role.

The original Indiana Jones trilogy was a tribute to Saturday morning B-movies, and made more than $1.1bn at the box office in the 1980s.

The fourth instalment had been in development for more than ten years, but creator George Lucas and director Steven Spielberg have now signed off on the script.

Lucas said last month it would be "a character piece" including some "very interesting mysteries".

Ageing hero

The screenplay was written by Jurassic Park and War of The Worlds scribe David Koepp, who told film website IGN it had taken "about a year" to complete.

"You realise this is a beloved character," he said, "and a lot of people are going to be angry no matter what I do".

Koepp also said the movie would acknowledge its hero's advancing years.

Harrison Ford, who last played the Jones role in 1989, is now 64.

Last year he said he would "bring the same physical action" to the new film as he did to the original trilogy.

Next year!!!  Next summer is gonna be good.  The queue starts here, or are you not fussed?

Ray Winstone has been added to the cast.

Can you imagine it:

Indy: I've a got a wall of flames in front of me and pit of snakes behind me! How do I get out of here?

Winston: Don't look at me. I'm ain't gonna tell what to do!

I'll get my coat...

Latest news stolen from Empire Magazine

Ten months. Ten months! Can it still be almost a year until the world's foremost authority on ancient artefacts, quality fedoras and kick-ass adventure returns to the big screen? Still, considering Indy IV was once only a far-off dream in the minds of millions of fans around the world, the fact the movie is now most definitely on its way should be enough to sate those treasure-seeking appetites...for now, at least.

With more Indy IV news expected to erupt from the Comic-Con panels over the next few days, Empire decided to kick things off by grabbing a few words with one of the movie's stars. Speaking in L.A., where Spielberg, Lucas and Ford are continuing the shoot, John Hurt told Empire that things were progessing " very nicely. I've done the odd scene with Shia [LeBoeuf]" he continued. "He's a very good young actor indeed and a very nice guy too. And working with Steven [Spielberg] is wonderful. It feels like I've worked with him many, many times before and I never have."

Despite a string of spiralling rumours - see Empire's Heroes Of 2008 feature for more Indy info - plot details and, in many cases, character specifics are still shrouded in secrecy. So when we asked the actor to tell us a bit about his role in next year's most anticipated movie, his reply was somwehat predicatble: "Well, I'm not allowed to tell you about my character - it's under tight control for good reason. It's not meant to be 'boo to you sucks' type of thing - it's because it makes sense...and it wouldn't help you to know what I was playing anyway."

And what of his hopes for the film? "My motto all the way through my life has been that if something stands the chance of succeeding on the level that it is intended to succeed on, then it's worth having a look at. And nobody could possibly say that this series has not absolutely fullfilled its intentions." Amen to that.

UPDATE: The offical Indiana Jones site has been updated with an on-set shot of Karen Allen (Marion Ravenwood returns!) and a series of new wallpapers. One of which I've just set as my desktop background. Awesome.

Karen Allen must be in her 50's now right? Is she the female lead or will they have some young bit of eye candy to keep the lads amused?

I vbelieve that laura lass up there is to be Indy's daughter via Marion, it was originally to be played by Natalie portman, but she never confirmed.

Other cast memebers though include: Shiea Leboeuf (However its spelt recently seen in the new Transformers movie) Cate Blanchett, John Hurt, Ray Winstone and Jim Broadbent.

Now if we could only get a plot outline.

The title has finally been announced! It's:

Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, here's the news bit from Yahoo.

Shia LaBeouf has revealed the official title for Indiana Jones 4 at the MTV Video Music Awards: Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. A few weeks ago we revealed that there were 6 possible titles for the movie and The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull was one of them.

When we reported about the Kingdom of The Crystal Skull, we said

It could be a reference to that Damien Hirst bit with the diamonds, but there is a modern legend that thirteen crystal skulls exist around the globe, of ancient origin and full of mystical power (power to do what is less clear). Five have apparently been found already, and its already been rumoured that they could provide a MacGuffin for the picture

This theory, compared to IESBs The crystal skulls turn out to be alien skulls, underneath a Mayan or Aztec pyramid that takes off and thus reveals itself to be a mothership of sorts. seem to have a little more weight and makes for a better movie.

Potentially a description of the trailer, which well see premiering on the official Indiana Jones website on Friday, February 15th. The smart thinking says it will be attached to the front of The Spiderwick Chronicles...

Here is the info:

The trailer starts off with the Paramount logo, then shows the idol from the start of RAIDERS.

Words come across the screen and say, "He found the Ark..."

Then clips from TEMPLE OF DOOM as it says, "He survived the Temple..."

Then clips of the third movie and, "He saved the Grail."

Then it shows a clip of a car pulling up and Indiana being thrown from the car. Then it says, "On May 22nd... he is back," and it shows him picking up his hat and the silhouette of Indiana Jones. Cue theme song.

Some really fast action scenes follow, and the highlight is a car chase scene in the warehouse where RAIDERS ends. One quick shot shows a box that is labled "Roswell". The trailer shows Cate Blanchett with dark hair ordering around troops.

The teaser then shows what looks to be a huge Mayan temple where the actors fall through quicksand, and the temple opens up and they start running down a long staircase where the stairs are coming out from the walls.

After some more quick action scenes, the trailer ends with Shia Labeouf standing at the bottom of stairs and looking up to Harrison Ford. Shia says, "I thought you said you were a teacher?!?!"

After two quick scenes where Indiana is punching a guy, it cuts back to Harrison and he replies, "Part time!"

I wasn't expecting much, but I was more than surprised and pleased with what I saw.

Call me Short But Not Round.

Indiana Jones 'opening in Cannes'

Harrison Ford and Shia LaBeouf in The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull
Harrison Ford's sidekick in the film is Shia LaBeouf

New Indiana Jones movie The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull will premiere at the Cannes Film Festival in May, one of its stars John Hurt has said.

But the actor, who plays Abner Ravenwood in the picture, told BBC One's Jonathan Ross show he was sworn to secrecy about the film's details.

There has been speculation the film will debut at the French event days before a worldwide release on 22 May.

The Cannes programme is not officially released until later this month.

'Brilliant'

A spokesman for the festival was not immediately available for comment.

Hurt told the chat show host that Harrison Ford, who is returning to play the titular hero at the age of 65, is "brilliant".

"I have nothing but good things to say about him. He understands that whole franchise. He is that franchise," said the British star.

The new film will also star Australian Oscar winner Cate Blanchett and Shia LaBeouf.

It took almost 18 years before Harrison, director Steven Spielberg and producer George Lucas returned with a fourth instalment in the popular film series.

A trailer to the new movie was released in February, and received a largely positive response.

Criticisms that Ford might have grown too old for the role have been largely dismissed by fans.

Hurt, meanwhile, said he was in talks to reprise his role as Quentin Crisp in a film about the later stages of his life in New York.

The actor won critical acclaim for his portrayal of Crisp in The Naked Civil Servant, a 1975 television play about the flamboyant gay man's struggle to be accepted in Britain during the 1930s and 40s.

Speilberg will do Inadiana Jones 5...!!!??!?!???

Steven Spielberg has said he is happy to make another Indiana Jones movie if fans enjoy the long-awaited fourth film, Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.

The director joined stars Harrison Ford, Cate Blanchett and Shia LaBeouf at the film's premiere in Cannes.

Asked at a press conference if he wanted to make another film, he said: "Only if you want more.

"That's why we made this Indiana Jones. We'll certainly have our ear to the ground to hear what happens."

"That'll decide were we go from here," Spielberg added.

The film attracted the likes of Natalie Portman, Sean Penn, Goldie Hawn, Salma Hayek, Dennis Hopper, Christian Slater, Billy Zane and Kelly Brook to its showpiece screening.

The BBC's Mark Savage said it was "very much in the style of the first three films". "The set-piece stunts are second to none," he added.

"There's also a sly acknowledgement of internet rumours that that Shia LaBeouf will take over the franchise," he continued.

Early reviews have been mixed - British movie magazine Empire's Damon Wise said it was "a slick, fun film", while the Daily Telegraph's David Gritten called it "undeniably creaky".

But leading man Ford, now 65, said he was not afraid of what critics thought.

"I expect to have the whip turned on me. It is not unusual for something that is popular to be disdained by some people and I fully expect it," he said.

"I'm not really worried about it. I work for the people who pay to get in - they are my customers.
"My focus is on providing the best experience I can for those people."

Ford, who made his debut in the role in 1981's Raiders of the Lost Ark, described the new film as a "celebration of the movies".

He added that he was delighted to see it create such a stir at Cannes, with fans holding up signs saying "need Indy ticket".

"I'm delighted that we have the opportunity to release a film now because for a couple of generations, young people have just been seeing this on DVD at home," he said.

"Now we get the chance to see it in the cinema, where it's meant to be seen. I'm very excited about that."

The film opens in 1957 at the height of the Cold War, and that the hero is on the search for a solid gold skull stolen from a lost city and guarded by the living dead.

Spielberg tried to make the film using old-fashioned B-movie techniques, rather than computer graphics, in keeping with the original trilogy.

Scenes in the trailer show Ford make a joking reference to his age.

"This isn't as easy as I remember," he quips.

The movie has its UK release on 22 May.

By the time they get started on the next film Harrison Ford will be pushing 70. Maybe they should look at passing the torch to someone younger...

Didn't take them long to complain, I thought this might happen

Members of the Russian Communist party have called for the new Indiana Jones film to be banned in the country because they say it distorts history.

Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, set during the Cold War, sees Harrison Ford's character battle Cate Blanchett's evil KGB agent.

St Petersburg Communist Party chief Sergei Malinkovich told the Reuters news agency it was "rubbish".

"Why should we agree to that sort of lie and let the West trick our youth?"

He said many Russian cinemagoers were teenagers who would be "completely unaware of what happened in 1957", when the film is set.

"They will go to the cinema and will be sure that in 1957 we made trouble for the United States and almost started a nuclear war.

"It's rubbish... In 1957 the communists did not run with crystal skulls throughout the US."

The Associated Press news agency quoted Moscow Communist official Andrei Andreyev as saying: "It is very disturbing if talented directors want to provoke a new Cold War."

The new Indiana Jones film has shot to the top of the North American box office chart, taking $126m (£63.7m) in its first four days on release.

Released 19 years after the last Indiana Jones film, The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull opened on Thursday following mixed reviews at Cannes.

It is expected to become the second most lucrative film to open on the US Memorial Day holiday weekend.

Disney's The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian slipped to second place.

It took $126m between Thursday and Sunday, according to studio estimates, and distributor Paramount expects it to take a further $25m (£12.6m) on Monday, a holiday in the US.

Paul Dergarabedian, president of Media By Numbers, which compiles box office figures, said the film was benefiting from word-of-mouth recommendations.

"This is the definition of a summer movie from two of the architects of the summer movie season - George Lucas and Steven Spielberg," he said.

Over the traditional Friday-Sunday weekend period, The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull took $101m (£51.1), while Prince Caspian took $23m (£11.6m).

Iron Man fell to number three with $20.1 million (£10.1m). The film's success has prompted Marvel Studios to start work on a sequel, due out in 2010.

The most successful film to open on a Memorial Day weekend in the US was Pirates of the Caribbean: At Worlds End, which took $139.8m between the Friday and Monday in 2007.

I went to see this the other day and have to say that when i left the cinema i was feeling disappointed.  Maybe it was the ending
Spoiler
or maybe it was the feeling i was getting that there will be more films but with the young indy and not Ford.  The film did have its good points and was funny in places but overall i was slightly disappointed.

I have now seen this and although it is not as good as the third one which was a lot to live upto, it is just as good as the second.

I have heard people saying it went a bit far with the main plot, but I don't see how it is any more strange than finding an Arc containing the ten commandments passed down from god which then wipes out all the Nazi's, or a stone which brings prosperity to a village or the cup of Christ which can let water heal gun shots.
