I'll get the ball rolling with my favourite Asian film (taken from a review I wrote a few years ago):
Battle Royale
(2000)
Directed by Kinji Fukasaku
Main Cast Beat Takeshi Kitano
Tatsuya Fujiwara
Aki Maeda
Taro Yamamoto
Masanobu Ando
Chiaki Kuriyama
Kou Shibasaki
Could you kill your best friend?
In 1999, a controversial Japanese novel was published penned by former news journalist Koushun Takami, which presented this very idea. The novel Battle Royale (based on the concept of a pro wrestling match where a number of wrestlers are in the ring at the same time and its every man for himself) became a cult hit at first but its notoriety soon meant it received far greater attention and was soon a huge bestseller.
One year later, legendary film director Kinji Fukasaku took on the task of transferring this explosive novel to the big screen. Fukasaku, noted for his Yakuza trilogy Without Honour And Humanity and successful entries into the genre of film noir was probably best suited to interpret such an idea as Battle Royale for the cinema, with his work cited as an influence by the likes of Quentin Tarantino and John Woo.
The film opens with this outline:
"At the dawn of the Millennium, the nation collapsed. At 15% unemployment, 10 million were out of work, 800,000 students boycotted school. The adults lost confidence, and fearing the youth, eventually passed the 'Millennium Educational Reform Act'...AKA: The BR Act."
Indeed the youth of Japan are revolting against the system, with both verbal and physical attacks on their teachers. Downtrodden teacher Kitano (Takeshi Kitano) enters a classroom to find a message scrawled on the blackboard: Takin the day off cause we want to Class B. A few moments later his is attacked in the hallway by an angry student who stabs him in the leg. Kitano quit teaching as a result of this incident.
We are also introduced to one of the male students Shuya Nanahara (Fujiwara), a troubled young boy whos mother left him at aged three then he returned home on his first day of the new school term to find his unemployed father had committed suicide. With no-one else to turn to, Nanahara finds solace and comfort with his school friends, most notably his best friend Nobu and the girl Nanahara has a secret crush on Noriko Nakagawa (Maeda), who in turn secretly fancies Nobu. Of course, this comfort zone of Nanahara is soon to disappear
Class B are abducted whilst out on a field trip. They are rendered unconscious by knockout gas and when they awaken, they find themselves in a dark classroom in an undisclosed location. The sudden arrival of their former teacher a very bitter Kitano flanked by a group of fully armed soldiers brings the students the explanation they desired.
Kitano explains that each year a class is picked at random and sent the remote location where the become part of a game called Battle Royale. The rules are simple: they will all be let loose on the remote island they have been transported to, and have three days to fight each other to the death. The last person standing is the winner and will be set free. In a beautifully satirical moment, the instruction video that explains everything to the students is done in a bright, glitzy MTV style presentation with a perky young female hosting the programme. With a big grin on her face, she proceeds to inform the students that they will have a back pack containing a map, basic provisions and a weapon, which may be either useful (like a gun or a knife) or worthless (like a tin tray).
The students also told that they are wearing electronic necklaces around their necks, which reads their pulse rates, thus sending out signals to the control centre, so Kitano can keep track of everyones whereabouts. Should a student try to remove the necklace they will be detonated. An angry Nobu puts this to the test so Kitano detonates his necklace. If there are no winners at the end of three days, the necklaces will automatically detonate wiping all the remaining students out.
As if that wasnt enough, every hour, certain parts of the island will be designated a danger zone. Should any student be in this area at that time, their necklaces will be automatically detonated. These will be announced whenever Kitano makes his quarterly updates to the students via the tannoy systems scattered around the island.
Finally, to spice the game up a little, two transfer students have been added to the game: Shougo Kawada (Yamamoto) who was the winner of a previous Battle Royale game and Kazuo Kiriyama (Ando), who is there for the fun of it.
The students are the released out into the main island and the fight for survival begins
Despite the disturbing premise of this film, the story it tells is very deep and emotional, as it explores the differing feelings of the students and how they handle the game. Some enter into the spirit of the game out of pure paranoia and fear of being killed, whilst others relish the idea. Some try to avoid any sort of conflict but soon end up at each others throats. One young couple so afraid to die took their lives on the first night.
Others try to continue to exist as normally as possible, like sprinter Takako Chigusa (Kuriyama - later of Kill Bill fame) who insist son continuing with her running training but end up fighting for her life against the advances of an amorous male student. We are also treated to the exploits of class bitch Mitsuko Souma (Kou Shibasaki) who manipulates her way though the game using her bullying tactics on the weaker girls and her feminine guile of the boys.
Some of the students manage to outsmart Kitanos crew by hacking into the computer systems but their big plans are thwarted by the psychotic Kiriyama, who - as the films cool anti-hero manages to destroy almost all hope of a peaceful survival for the other students.
The main focus is on Nanahara and Noriko as they stick together, forging a friendship with Kawada who helps them during the game. This leads us to a very interesting conclusion to the game.
Battle Royale is a well paced, violent, visceral film where the violence doesnt once come across as gratuitous, due to the emotional aspect of the students in their quest for survival whilst being pitted against both friend and foe. Kinji Fukasaku stuck almost faithfully to the original novel bar a few changes when interpreting it for the big screen which is rare for most cinematic adaptations. However, whereas the novel had a slightly more political bent to some of the students angry reactions to being put in the game and to the system they were rebelling against in the first place, Fukasaku decided to focus on the emotional reactions of the students. To that end, we have a very thought provoking and intelligent film that appeals to the viewer on so many levels.
The performances in this film are sublime. The legendary Beat Takeshi Kitano effortlessly steals the show as the bitter and emotionless teacher Kitano, managing to bring a detached menace to his character, whilst at the same time the pathos shines through. Credit must also go to the younger actors, specifically Tatsuya Fujiwara and Aki Maeda as Nanahara and Noriko. Unlike in Hollywood where they usually cast 21 year olds to play teenagers, the junior cast of Battle Royale were all in their early teens (in fact, Maeda celebrated her 15th birthday during filming) here, yet that all managed to give performance way beyond their years whilst maintaining every aspect of their obvious youth.
A sequel, Battle Royale II Requiem, was released in 2003 but Kinji Fukasaku died during filming so his son Kenta, who also wrote the script and screenplay, took over the directorial duties. But the film failed to recreate the magic of its predecessor. This was mostly due to it lacking the vision and direction of the original novel, and the character development of the first film.
Battle Royale is a film that rightfully deserves its cult status yet also deserved far greater mainstream recognition if only for the questions it raises about the future of todays youth and the future of society in general, without pulling any punches.

No I don't get the HK Legends mag as I have pretty much all of the titles from HKL already. Their regular offers (like 3 for Ł20 or By One Get One Half Price) on their website come in very handy!
I got my Godzilla DVDs from E-bay but there is a UK site that also does them:
They also have some Godzilla films that were made in the 1980's when they tried to ressurect the franchise that I wasn't aware of, so when my financial situation improves, I shall be looking to check them out.
As for the Hard Boiled sequel, I don't play video games so you didn't ask a dumb question at all.
there was a big godzilla boxset in japan that had all 20 odd title with a big zilla head as well, however I was going to get it but it was not in eng subs. i am off home now, see you tomorrow.

I'm hoping that Curse... will be at my local cinema but that is a bit optimistic.
Last week a Korean film called Duelists was released and is it was my brithday on Sunday I thought it would be a cool way to celebrate. Unfortunately the film is only being screen in just FIVE cinemas across the whole country!! Same with New Police Story and The Host - they weren't on at any of my local cinemas either. The only Asian film I've been able to see in the cinema was Fearless last year.
I appreciate that Asian cinema is a niche thing but that still doesn't mean that we fans can't be catered for. Surely these big mutliplexes can afford to put one or two of the smaller screens aside for foreign language films?
Seriously, how can the Asian cinema fanbase grow and future films be deemed worthy of a UK release if people don't even have the opportunity to see them?
Cool list stefd. I have seen a lot more films than I have through my DVD rental service - a lot of them are in your list and one day I shall get them myslef but the issue of funds is a delicate one right now.
Saw the duellist at a press screening it was superb. Also, another to look out for is City of Violence.
JUSTICE NOW LIES IN THEIR HANDS
Korean cinema's assault on the senses of Western filmgoers continues in dazzling style (and we really do mean ‘style') with the violent crime thriller-cum-martial arts actioner, THE CITY OF VIOLENCE, the latest offering from the man who has been hailed as the Korean Tarantino, "Crying Fist" director Ryoo Seung-wan.
Both satirizing and paying homage in equal measure to the gritty action flicks of the 1970s, while combining elements of Scorsese's "Goodfellas" and Stephen Chow's "Kung Fu Hustle" with referential nods to the likes of Walter Hill's "The Warriors", THE CITY OF VIOLENCE is a supremely entertaining work that scores on every level.
Detective Jeong Tae-su (played by martial arts wizard Jeong Du-hong), returns from Seoul to Onsung, the hometown of his youth to attend the funeral of his long-time friend, a reformed small-time mobster, Wang-jae (Ahn Gil-gang). There, following a nostalgic reunion with his gang of former childhood buddies, he becomes obsessed with investigating the circumstances surrounding Wang-jae's death. What he uncovers sparks a chain of events that results in Jeong and his buddy Ryoo (played by director Seung-wan himself) being forced to battle it out with teenage gangs, deadly assassins and a horde of murderous mobsters as they get closer to the truth.
Slickly exploiting the "grindhouse" style of filmmaking usually associated with 1970s cinema, and boasting astonishing fight scenes and action sequences choreographed and performed by Korea's leading martial arts practitioners, THE CITY OF VIOLENCE charges non-stop from one set-piece to another resulting in an action-packed cinematic jolt of adrenalin guaranteed to leave audiences breathless. Film fans will also find additional pleasure in spotting and revelling in Seung-wan's affectionate homages to many Hollywood favourites, including Rob Reiner's "Stand By Me", Brian De Palma's "The Untouchables" and Tarantino's "Kill Bill" amongst others.
CITY OF VIOLENCE (cert. 15) is released by Contender Entertainment and opens at UK cinemas on 18th May 2007.

Thanks Mattitude :) im quite surprised how many asian films some of you guys have which i dont have, im more keen on the cinema of Korea and Japan rather then China for some odd reason to be honest though. Most of the movies i own are a little obscure rather then the more famous asian movie releases though i have almost every tartan asia Release. I found a great copy of death note and death note the last name 3 disc bundle on ebay and quickly snapped that up for 24 pounds so pretty pleased about that!
Thanks for the Death Note DVD tip off benny! I just found a set myself on E-Bay and the seller is the same one who sold me the Fearless director's cut so I know he's reliable.
BTW, there are some great HK films out there I can recommend to you including:
Fulltime Killer One Night In Mongkok Running Out Of Time So Close Chunking Express Soeul Raiders Purple Storm Naked Weapon
They have the flavour of the Korean films like Tell Me Something or A Bittersweet Life so they should appeal to you.
BTW - Infernal Affairs is on Film 4 again next week!
Good job in finding a death note set on ebay Mib, had trouble finding one for a while but i bought some posters of the move while i was searching :). Thanks for the recommendations on Hong hong films to, i have a few of those but some i would like to see.
there are the 3 disc sets of death note , it comes with 1 and 2 and a extra making of dvd on www.cdwow.com for Ł16, for those who dont have it and if anyone does get then would they be willing to copy the 3rd for me, as i dont really want to buy them again, if someone is then there may be a dvd in it for them with the anime version of death note so far, 21 eps in avi format with eng subs and the full 12 vol manga on the same dvd

Looking foward to getting my 3 disc set though as back up i bought a single disc set of Death note the last name to. Has anyone watched the Mongolian film Cave of the Yellow dog? It looks a very intresting film and one id like to watch, but is it any good guys, if youv seen it?
Have just found out that a third Death Note is in the works and also a spin off film about L ( not sure when it will be set but those who have seen Death Note 2 will do doubt have something to say about that ).
and also the rumors that Hollywood want to do a remake have poped up but if any luck that will fall though

Urgh, i hate the US film industry these days, everything they do now is so poor and it saddens me everytime i hear about remakes. I am not to sure but is the new premonition movie based on the Japanese original?
I wondered if the two Premonitions were the same but it seems more to be just a case of the same name. Whereas the Japanese version is based around the newspaper reports, the US version is more to do with Bullock waking up the day after an event happens to her when it has yet to happen in "reality" to everyone else...if that makes sense.
I'm still dreading the My Sassy Girl remake which should be out later this year and wil no doubt be lacking the charm of the original...
I read that the us version of Premonition was loosely based on the jap version which means that it is crap and should be avoided just like most US remakes

Indeed, My sassy girl is a charming, funny film which i doubt the US Version will be anything like.Dreading the battle Royal remake and others which i had heard were being remade such as the Eye.I guess noones seen the cave of the yellow dog as i had spoke about earlier so will try to watch that in the next few days and write about it here :) It looks a very gentle film.
I picked up the Japanese orignal of Premonition yesterday for Ł5 in Woolies in Milton Keynes. Tartan have re-released it with a new cover for some reason but it's still the same film.
My Death Note 3 DVD set should be arriving from Hong Kong in the next couple of days!
Ah i see you bought death note box set from the same person as i did MIB :). Mine should be here soon though i had bought the set a week ago! Still i cant wait. I recently bought a few 5 pound asian films from HMV, one being Full Metal Yakuza which is directed by the great Takashi Miike (forgive my poor spelling of his name) and another being Shikoku starring the lovely Chiaki Kuriyama.
Nah, im sure you have a perfectly sane mind SteFd ^^ though his films are pretty crazy. Havent yet watched full metal Yakuza, but it looks like the japanese version of Robocop, just with a yakuza guy, cant wait to watch it.Zebraman was another Takashi movie which im surprised noone has actually seen yet who i spoken to or discuss online with, its a fantastic film and would recommend anyone to check it out, the english sub version is available somewhere online.
Finally got my 3 disc set of Death note and death note the last name, quite happy about that now!
Takashi Miike is funny one. The first film I saw of his was The Agitator a Yakuza flick that seemed to drag on a bit too long. I think Miike must have issues with women because in the first 10 minutes of this film, a girl had a microphone shoved up her rear end!
And of course, there is the beatings the girls take in Ichi The Killer and I've heard that women are treated even worse in the Dead Or Alive series. But he seemed to address that in the final disturbing 20 minutes of Audition...
When I first saw the Japanese trailer for Ichi..I couldn't believe the violence towards the women, as it included the infamous scene where the girl has her boobs cut off with (I think) a desktop guillotine that was cut from the UK release which I a glad of. I was put off watching Ichi... for year but I kept reading all of these positive reviews so I relented and rented it last year. I found that it was as bad as I had feared although there still was a lot of OTT violence, it was no worse than what I had seen in other Asian films.
Then Miike goes and remakes the Korean comedy The Quiet Family and turns it into a musical called The Happiness of the Katakuris!!
Miike Takashi is fantastic, his work is as you said spim, quite strange and seems to encourage a lot of violence against women (Even in the superhero flick Zebraman, which is perhaps a family kind of film, though rather dark in places) youll see a lady get murdered by mr crabhead (or whatever his name was) so not nice. I cant remember but didnt he direct the truly odd Gozu? Or was that another director? One of my faverate Japanese actors, Sho Aikawa starred in that i believe and also Zebraman to, so i wonder if he has been in any other of Miik Takashis work.
I've not seen it but it was featured on Wossy's Asian Invasion last year and they showed the ending, where a couple are shown in flagrante and when teh guy tires to wihdraw from the woman, he can't because he's stuck! he ends up dragging her across the floor everytime he tries to pull away!
Good spot! I never knew that, and i havent seen that film so will be checking it out :). Tonight im going to have a nice rest and watching Death note the Last name, cant wait for it, seen some shots online of the movie and it resembles some of the mangas scenes with Misa being tied up and Light being kept in the room, looks great so looking foward to watching it :).
Iv wanted to watch the Duelist for a while now so i really must check that out. Watched a bit of death note the last name, quite good so far, though earlier in the day my younger sister watched it in full and ended up in tears so im guessing something sad happens towards the end of the film and being the sensitive little soul i am, no doubt if something sad happens, it will make me weep to!
Mine didn't arrive today as I thought it would. I got the e-mail from the seller on Friday so I'm guessing that it should be here by the end of the week, considering it has to come from Hong Kong.
Then again, the post in my area is pretty dreadful anyway...
Well mine was sent on the 21st from the same hong kong trader, and arrived 6 days later for me. So im sure youll get it soon. I was quite worried about it myself because usually when i buy dvds, even from abroad, i get quite fast but pretty glad i have it now :). Watched Death note the last name some more yesterday, not all because was to tired and the film is a good 130 or 40 minutes plus so will watch the rest tonight. Im thinking of having an live action movie movie week actually, the rest of death note today, Prince of Tennis tomorrow, the last love song on friday, Devilman saturday, and Boogeypop and the others on Sunday :). Have to watch battle royale again to, i miss it, espicially after reading the mangas!
Well my dad usually does the feedback stuff on ebay, i just buy! But if you see a feedback which reads thefatman002 then thats our username on ebay ;). I think you may get it tomorrow MIB, but if not Friday for sure. Its a great box set so youll certainly enjoy it.
I just saw that mine was shipped on the 24th. Because I have bought from him before, my feedback tally doesn't increase unless it's from a new user so I didn't notice he had left feedback.
Finally!!! Got my Death Note 3 disc set and I'm impressed. Cool looking presentation box, great artwork on the discs and inlays too.
Had a flick through the films themselves and it looks like they've really turned the story on it's head in the second film, with the whole Yotsuba corporation situation seemingly being overlooked and used elsewhere by giving the note book to this female reporter (who is hot btw ). I guess it will become clearer when I watch the film properly.
The bonus disc features are pretty good and comprehensive showing every detail of the film making. I like how the atmosphere on the film set seems friendly and communal as well as professional and not all "Diva-ish" as you see on Hollywood film sets.
The actual films may a lot to be desired as far as the Death Note franchise goes (in terms of adaptation) but this disc set is a recommended purchase for any Death Note fan!
Sounds like your quite pleased with it ^^ Its a fantastic set, i love bonus features so i am quite pleased that the set has some decent ones though it would have been nice to have some for the original film as well. I hope they make a live action BLEACH or School Rumble film next!
