Martial Arts Movies

So which are you favourites? Who are your favourite stars and which style do you like to watch?

Not wishing to brag but I had my top 5 printed in the Daily Mirror newspaper last August which was thus:

TOP 5 MARTIAL ARTS FILMS

1. FIST OF FURY (1971)

This tale of a Chinese martial arts student taking revenge against a Japanese martial arts school for murdering his teacher remains for me Bruce Lee’s greatest work. Some of his most fluid and impressive fight scenes can be found here as well as a glimpse of his underrated acting skills. Untouchable.

2. WAY OF THE DRAGON (1972)

Bruce again in his directorial debut. Despite a more comedic performance, his fight scenes are as serious as ever. This film is of course famous for arguably the greatest martial arts fight ever captured on film as Bruce does battle with Chuck Norris in the Roman coliseum. Essential.

3. FEARLESS (2006)

Jet Li has chosen to bow out of martial arts epics and what a way to go. Li’s portrayal of legendary martial arts master Huo Yuan Jia is a fitting swan song from one of the true greats of the genre. It’s a shame that the cinema release was cut by 45 minutes but the 104 minutes we did get was spectacular.

4. DRUNKEN MASTER (1978)

Forget his action-comedy output of recent years, THIS is where you find the REAL Jackie Chan. The film that made him a mega star in Asia has all the ingredients he is famous for – the humour, lightening fast fight scenes and stunning choreography – but never were they bettered than in this true classic.

5. HERO (2002)

Jet Li, Donnie Yen, Tony Leung, Maggie Cheung and Zhang Ziyi in a beautifully shot, emotionally performed and powerful story led film with stunning fight scenes. What more could you ask for? A modern masterpiece.

Obviously this is just a taster of my favourite martial arts films as I had to whittle it down to just five which was very difficult.

As you've probably gathered, Bruce Lee is the guv'nor as far as I'm concerned (in fact I was named after him) and I also have a soft spot for Jet Li, Jackie Chan, Sammo Hung and the underrated Yeun Biao.

Over to you!

In no particular order,

Bloodsport - JC Van Damme's finest movie.

Ong Bak - An incredible movie the first time you watch it and it just gets better on repeat viewings.

Best of the Best 1 & 2 - Cheesey for sure, but I wanted hair like Eric Roberts after watching the first one.

Nico (above The law) -  Steven Seagal, the maestro.

Marked for Death -  Seagal again possibly his best out and out martial arts movie.

No Retreat No Surrender -  JC's first movie as 'Ivan the Russian' quality low rent 80's video.

Fearless -  Superb the best I've ever seen from Jet Li.

Enter the Dragon -  What list can be complete without this? Until Ong Bak came along the best Martial Arts movie.

First Strike -  My personal fav of Jackie Chans. The Ladder fight alone wins hands down.

So ther you go. Agree or don't thier mine.

Just a heads up - Hong Kong Legends are doing an Easter special of Buy One Get One Free this weekend (on titles of the same value) and they start at just Ł4.99!!

The timing sucks for me as I have no debit card right now (see the rant thread for details) so I'll have to see if I can sweet talk a family member into helping me out.

The link is: http://www.hongkonglegends.co.uk

Happy bargain hunting!!

I havent watched a martial arts movie for quite a while now, shame on me. I am not a fan of Ekin cheung of twin effects who is ok as a martial artist but not a great actor. Storm Riders, is a good martial arts movie, so if anyone hasent watched that i would recommend. Recently watched a Bruce lee Documenty i have on dvd, the guy was phenominal, it was impossible for the camaraman to pick up his moves, as he was so quick.
