Since this was bound to be brought up sooner or later, I thought I should run this poll here and we could discuss this old chestnut here, as I have done on other forums.

Do you prefer your foreign language films and Anime to be dubbed into English or the language of your own country? Or do you prefer them to remain in their original language with subtitles?

Most of us have either seen or own those old Kung Fu movies from the 70's where a typically incongruous voice is out of synch with the lip movements of the actor on screen. Thankfully the dubbing techiniques have improved over the years but that still doesn't stop this practice from being irrittating. I also find it offensive having heard the speaking voice of a well known Asian actor (Bruce Lee, Jet Li, Jackie Chan, etc) and yet the voice they have been replaced with sounds nothing like them.

Dubbing on Anime seems to be easier for the production teams as they can match the movements of the lips more accurately but does the sound of an English speaking voice match the character on the screen? Can they convey the emotions of the character and the situations they are in as well as their original Japanese counterparts?

And what about the delivery and flow of the dialogue when spoken by the dubbed voices? Not only do Asian's tend to speak a lot quicker than we do in the West, but they often have either one word that means the same as one English phrase or vice versa. Perhaps the translation of the script make listening to the dubbed dialogue awkward because the translation is somtimes an approximation of the original words?

And would such European classics like Fellini's La Dolca Vita be held in such high esteem if it were dubbed into English? I doubt it. The film would lose so much of its charm and power. Since it is supposed to reflect the culture of Italy and the decadant behaviour of the gentry, then that should include the language.

Can anyone imagine the recent French classic Amelie working with a dubbed English language track? Me neither.

I have to go with subbed. ALthough at times it can be a pain reading them and you can miss things in the film. I much prefer hearing an actors own tone and inflection on the words he is saying, even if I don't understand them.

Dubbed looks stupid most of the time. And your not always getting the original actors voice!

Subbed is easily the best way of watching a foreing film, i cant stand dubbing, which is often silly sounding, patronising or just plain awful to listen to. I love to listen to asian language which is great to read the subs along with listening to their own language, hearing japanese also helps me learn the lingo more. So Subs are the best for me.

I never thought I would like sub titled films, but then a while ago I watch my very first one on channel 4 in the UK.

It was Battle Royale and as I watched it, at first it was a little strange reading the sub titles as I watched the film. But as the film progressed I found it became more and more natural until it didn't really feel like I was reading the sub titles conciously and was just watching it like any other film.

After that experience I would say for sure in my opinion that I would go for subbed over dubbed all the time now.

Subtitles every time for me. It means it's still the actors performing the lines and the experince isn't tainted. Imagine Seven Samurai, The Seventh Seal or Jean de Florette at the mercy of a penny pinching distributor. We could have ended up with The Flashing Blade Trilogy! *shudders*

Sure did, voted for subbed of course! Man i still get cheesed off watching some of the godzilla dvds i have, each one has only the english dubbed and no option for the original japanese language, tried to find better versions but of the old movies like Godzilla vs... ect, no luck so having to watch them with some truly awful dubbing.

Funny you should say that about the Godzilla movies, I have a set of Region 3 DVDs of the "Millennium" series and the first one "Godzilla 2000", I can only get the English subs up if I select the "Cantonese" language - they won't work if I select Japanese...

Subbed, definitely. Never have I seen a dub job that has been even vaguely competent. I mean, the thought of a dubbed Batle Royale sounds about as wrong as the US remake.

EDIT: However, for anime, i'm undecided as Cowboy Bebop and Neon Genesis Evangelion both have superb dubbing, but plenty of other animes have really shocking dubs.

Subtitled for me...it just feels much more an authentic experience. Dubbed feels like a second hand performance.
When I was in Japan they seemed to subtitle most western films which was handy for me. I saw Children of Men in Roppongi Hills, the Japanese audience stayed til every bit of the credits rolled...then collected all their drinks and popcorn to save the cleaners a job. Such is Japan!

Of course they need to subtitle the western films in japan glowlad, since most japanese cant speak english to well, so for them, they have to have the subs which im sure they dont mind. Indeed very clean to there, hardly any trash any place! Will have to go to the cinema in japan but i know its really expensive there!

Love spainish films and you lose so much of the "purity" of the film when you put it in english.

Spainish is a passionate language and English just spoils the film!
