Are you sure? I read a report saying that in America, it's badly failed in the box office and as such, it's being split up for the UK release.
Oh, and by the way, I think it looks terrible, like a lot of Tarantino's movies, but I haven't seen Kurt Russel in too long, so i'll give it a go just for him.
Apparently there's been a kick off with the talk of them releasing it in two parts as everyone is seeing right through the claim that 'the rest of the world has no knowledge of double features' and that it's clearly just being done to maximise profits as the film is dying on it's arse.
Well the verdicts in and you ain't gonna be happy.....
LONDON (APRIL 27): The Weinstein Co. today announced that Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguezs highly anticipated Grindhouse double bill will be released as two separate movies in the U.K. Tarantinos Death Proof will be released via Momentum Pictures/Dimension Films on September 21 with Robert Rodriguezs Planet Terror released at a later date to be confirmed shortly.
Death Proof will screen In Competition at this years Cannes Film Festival, May 16-27 2007 continuing the festivals long and successful collaboration with the filmmaker whose 1994 movie Pulp Fiction won the coveted Palme DOr.
Tarantinos Death Proof is a white knuckle ride behind the wheel of a psycho serial killers roving, revving, racing death machine. Rodriguezs Planet Terror is a heart-pounding trip to a town ravaged by a mysterious plague.
Inspired by the unique distribution of independent horror classics of the sixties and seventies, these are two shockingly bold features replete with fake trailers, missing reels and plenty of exploitative mayhem. Rodriguez and Tarantino set out to make two very different, very complete movies which will be distributed separately internationally where the culture of grindhouses grinding out movies back to back is not familiar.
Harvey Weinstein stated, We are very proud of Grindhouse, which earned overwhelming rave reviews for its audaciousness and boldness. Based on US audience's positive reactions to Quentin Tarantino's 'Death Proof' and Robert Rodriguez's 'Planet Terror' combined with their resistance to the three-hour running time, weve revised our UK release plans to allow audiences the chance to see the films separately, like they will be shown in all international territories. We are really excited about launching the new version of 'Death Proof' in Cannes and about the international release for both movies.
Hopfully the Region 1 DVD will be complete. We'll just have to settle for that.
Well Death proof will be up first on the 21st September. There currently is no date for Planet Terror. They have reinserted the missing reels so the DVD release of this will be intresting. I think I will have to get the Region 1 fopr the 'Original' version and then the 2 Region 2s for the complete vcersions of the seperate films.
The infamous trialers will be appearing on Planet Terror apparantly.
I'm ordering the DVD as soon as I can from the US. Not sure Id want to see this as a proper movie, doesn't it defy the point of wht Rodrigez and Tarrantino were try to do?
I have to say I meant to metion this a while ago when i saw it. I was really dissapointed with this... Quentin basically homages himself to a point where it gets a bit dull... Far too much talking even for a Taratino movie..
Ah well, it's still miles better than anything else out the same time... Here's the UK poster.
Death Proof is one of the worst things I have ever witnessed. I really can't express how much I hate this film. I know my opinion doesn;t mean ****, but really, if you haven't seen this film do not even consider watching it. And if you're a Tarantino fan, then you're the kind of dickhead this film was made for.
Apart from Kill Bill I've not enjoyed Tarantino's works at all. In fact, aside from the aforementioned title, I couldn't even sit through a whole film of his.
If it wasn't his love for Asian cinema (which he rips off anyway) and his championing the cause here in the West then I'd probably hate him completely.
