Okay, I mentioned this before elsewhere so here it is.

If you miss the good old melodic powermetal with bone crunching riffs that you can bang your head to till the brain cells start rattling played by a bunch of freaky, gothic looking misfits then you need to look to the Orient for your fix.

Arguably the top practioners of this genre right now are Onmyouza, fronted by the exotic goddes Kuroneko.

Onmyouza

Here's the link to their official site : http://www.onmyo-za.net/eng/index.html

And with special thanks to Onikage here is the most recent release by the band, Inyo-Shugyoku which is their "best of" collection plus a bonus disc of live tracks.

album cover

Disc 1 - "You" : http://www.megaupload.com/?d=YBQYAFO7 (107.81)

Disc 2 - "In" : http://www.megaupload.com/?d=UQY3ZO79 (108.48MB)

Disc 3 - "Bonus Ltd Edition" : http://www.megaupload.com/?d=UISFB5QB (28.54MB)

Enjoy! headbang.gif

I guess Visual Kei bands have their place as long a the music rocks like X-Japan, Dir en grey or early Luna Sea, et al.

I've not heard their stuff but I know they did some metal/goth albums, so if it rocks it's in. biggrin.gif

you know,onmyoza are huge in japan and 2 yrs ago they also toured in europe,and i bet if they were singin in english they would be more widely known,not just to metal but to all music fans,just like the almighty X or Diru...but then they wouldnt b Onmyouza anymore,bcoz their style is so unique and performances and interpretations so full of pathos...and they sing in an ancient japanese that not even their peoples can fully understand,about myths and traditions of their beautiful culture:they call it youkai [ghost] heavy metal and their style is clearly visual,yet they r not too heavy nor too hair,with that epic but speed sound,that even if you cant understand rats of the lyrics,you cant just help loving kuroneko polimorphic vocal extension,now mellow,now high,mad in laughter,crying in sorrow just like she was interpreting a no or kabuki drama,accompanied by the genius of matatabi,whose vocal ability is just specular to hers,not to mention how he n the rest of the band rock their instruments;
i cant claim to be an expert conoisseur,i do not have a vaste musical culture,but i know what i like to listen,n even tho i m more into nu-metal [which i know those who consider themselves true metal fans despise],but bands like onmyouza just deserve to be listened and recognized for their musical talent,in spite of the genre and contents they offer.
personally i think everybody can enjoy of their music,but then i dont know how die-hard fans think of everything that is new or different,when they compare them to their standards which have stabilized thru years of listening to a certain kind of music.
at any rate,you should give em a chance,try downloading the live songs first as band like onmyouza definetly give their best on stage.
in the worst case,you just wasted half an hour of your life,but in a better way then going to church on sunday.lol...

PEACE

Woah, The guitaring is pretty awesome. It's pretty reminisent of Cross between Testament and Trivium. Not sure about the Vocals though...

You'll get used to the vocals, and when you do (especially on a track like Koga ninpocho) you'll see just how relevant and well suited they are. Kuroneko shares the singing on the heavier and darker tracks with bass player Matatabi so there is a nice dynamic to help tell the story.

As Oni says, Onmyouza deal with storytelling in a traditional Japanese style mixed with gothic elements and translated into powermetal music that comes together best in their live shows. It's a vibe and style of it's own which sio why the band are so big in Japan.

Go on - give 'em a go! wink.gif

okay well,since u started this thread,and i dont feel like opening a new one myself,i would like to introduce a new j-rockband i just discovered...
they r the`MAXIMUM THE HORMONE` n those of u who watch death note probably heard em already,as they sing the current season opening n ending song `whats up poeple` and zetsubou billy;

the band is rather new[edit:not really since their first album was realeased back in 99,but im pretty sure they r new to the masses even in japan] and i dont really have many infos about em at hand...since their official web is entirely in japanese,but still pretty interesting to browse [just click the various linkages and behold the..uh,whatever,see it with ur own eyes at : http://www.55mth.com/main.html].
so now you ll tell me,`why da heck you wanna mention a band u kno nothing about?`,well rather simple,the answer is in their music so check it out on youtube if u dont wanna bother with emule downloadin until u sure its worth and let me know wht you think:

http://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=Maximum+the+Hormone&search=Search

my first impression was really...w00t japanese SoD!!? (system of a down) rox0r!!1 then i saw a couple of videos and bang,love at first sight (urgh not really cuz the guys r fairly ugly as true punk hard rockers should b but u got wht i meant..and they do the headbangs 4 real,hell yeah!! oh n did i mention their drummer its a lady..and a goddamn cool one,i shall say)n i thought i must absolutely share my discover.
so,while i await 4 ur opinions i will b trying 2 dwld more of their stuff n find more detailed infos which we can all comprhend,but 4 the moment u `ll have to put up with this portoguese fansite,which i hope will b updated soon:

http://www.maximumthehormone.pt.vu/

MiB,i expect some comments especially from you!

PEACE

Actually I'm not too keen on the tracks they've used for Death Note at all. The opening theme is a just a racket with crude lyrics and the closing theme is only slightly better.

To be honest I preferred the original closing theme song they used for the show.

yeha...but that was nothing hardcore and not maximum hormone but another band called nightmare (same for the `trickster` ending).

heres `the world` [opening]

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xdxn4sPxSQU

and `alumina death` [ending]

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pCK5aMcOxds

now,this is typical japanese visual key;
how metal is it,i dunno tho.but then,when considering japanese rock bands wo do not do the most extreme stuff i always had trouble defining em metal or not,even starting from the godlike X-japan...
maybe i need metal repetition lessons.lol

PEACE
