In 1941 it was B-movie actor Tom Tyler who first portrayed Captain Marvel in the Republic serial. in the 1960's Barry Bostwick played him on TV. And now, according to PWInsider.com another next actor to step into the red and white costume at the call of the hallowed words "Shazam"... Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson is considering playing the role of DC Comics superhero Captain Marvel in the feature film adaption of "Shazam!" which is currently being developed.Comic book website SuperHero Hype quoted Johnson as saying he's discussed the possibility with Peter Sagal, who's tapped to produce the film, commenting, " Listen, John August is writing the script and he's a tremendous writer, and I'll just wait for the script to come in. But I'd love to work with Pete again, and certainly would want to work with John August. So there's a strong possibility." Shazam! tells the story of a young boy, Billy Batson who is given the power of the Gods by an wizard, Shazam when speaks the wizard's name. The character was originally created by Fawcett Comics as a takeoff of Superman and later acquired by DC Comics. Johnson is currently working with Segal, who is executive producer on the feature film adaption of "Get Smart", which will also feature Anne Hatheaway and Steve Carrell, among others. That film is slated to be released in June 2008.
So what do we think? I'll avoid the "Captain Marvel is white" angle for now, but is The Rock a comic book type hero? Roles like Scorpion king, Doom and Welcome To The Jungle are more suited to him. Can he pull off the cape wearing superhero or is this a rumour we'd be better off ignoring?
Well, he was white in the comic books and in the previous live action incarnations
But, as he is supposed to be a representation of the powers of the six legendary figures (Solomon, Hercules, Atlas, Zeus, Achilles and Mercury) then I guess they could get away with an ethnic looking actor although I still can't see The Rock in a cape and spandex outfit...
Read the original post - it says the DC Comics version, the one created in the 1930's to rival Superman. He used the acronym SHAZAM (from the names of 6 legendary powers I mentioned before) as the code word to change from teenager Billy Batson to Captain Marvel. He's not called Shazam - that was the name of the Egyptian wizard who gave Billy the powers.
I'd not heard of this other Captain Marvel before you mentioned it and I'm surprised that Stan Lee was able to get away with using the name, but the original is THE Captain Marvel and the more widely recognisible of the two. It was only because of the Marvel character that some later comics were published until the title of "SHAZAM" to avoid confusion but sadly it has confused some people.
Bottom line: this guy in the red and white costume is Captain Marvel and balls to Stan Lee's version!
The proposed role for The Rock in the forthcoming Shazam! film is not Captain Marvel, but actually Marvel's nemesis Black Adam. That actually makes sense as Rock looks something like Adam.
