I have the box set and have managed to watch them all, so here is my view on it.

hinagang.jpg

The story of Love Hina is about a 20 year old boy called Keitar Urashima. He is clumsy and not very smart. When he was young he made a promise to a girl that they would meet at Tokoyo University, but now he can't remember the girls name or what she looked like! This does sound pretty stupid that he can't remember but is important to the story.

Because of the promise he made he has tried to get into Tokoyo U twice at the start of the story but has failed both times. His parents want him to give up on going there, so when his grandmother asks him to the Hinata Apartments and he is offered the apartment manager job he sees it as an opportunity to work while still trying to get into Tokoyo U

The twist is that the Hinata Apartments is an all girl dorm and Keitar being clumsy gets into a number of awkward situations which usually end up with him being beaten up by one of the girls.

There are 6 main girls at the Hinata Apartments

Naru Narusegawa is most peoples favourite, she is 17 and also trying to get into Tokoyo U. Keitar obviously fancies Naru and the on going story line through Love Hina is whether Naru fancies Keitar!

Shinobu Maehara is my favourite, she is 13 and was talked into living at Hinata Apartments by Keitar as her parents divorce was effecting her. She obviously has a major crush on Keitar and is the only girl at the apartments who doesn't beat him up. She is very shy and when awkward things happen between her and Keitar she usually runs away crying. Because of this she is by far the cutest character in the series and thats why she is my favourite.

Motoko Aoyama is a 15 year old school girl who's family has a tradition of martial arts and she is very formal and very skilled with a sword. She often beats up Keitar and is opposed to him being the new apartment manager, although she learns something very important from him as the story develops.

Kaolla Su is a very strange character. She is a 13 year old foreign exchange student. It is mentioned during the series that its not clear what country she is actually from. She loves technology and is very playful, always jumping around (hyperactive) and of course hitting Keitar.

Mitsune Konno is 19 and doesn't appear to do anything. She is often drinking and trys to take advantage of any opportunity coming her way. She throughout the series is trying to get Keitar and Naru together.

Finally there is Haruka Urashima who is legally Keitars aunt (apparently they are actually cousins), she doesn't like him calling her aunty and when he does it often causes him to get hit.

There are other regular characters and temp residents at the Hinata apartments.

Mutsumi Otohime is almost a female version of Keitar as she is very clumsy, 21 and prone to passing out.

Tama-chan is a small flying hot spring turtle. Yes a turtle....

Noriyasu Seta is a a professor at Tokoyo U and Naru's old tutor (and crush)

Sara McDougal is Seta's 9 year old adopted daughter. She stays at the Hinata apartments for a while while Seta is at a archeology dig. She also likes to beat up Keitar and becomes good friends with Su.

Love Hina is best described as a romatic story about the relationships between the various characters. As the series develops so do their relationships and I found myself growing to really like particualr characters while feeling sorry for others. There are no bad guys as its not that sort of story and the only violence in it is mostly directed at Keitar.

It does have some sexual undertones and at times can be very suggestive without being explicit. As the series progresses the sexual undertones do become even more obvious and closer to the surface, as well as the art becoming more risque. For example there are hot springs at the Hinata Apartments when the girls all bathe and in the early episodes they all wear towels in the water so when events occur they are always covered. But in the later episodes they appear to be nude in the water although nothing is ever seen.

I recall downloading the first episode of this but the version I got the quality was terrible so I didn't watch it.

Harem comedies are quite popular in Manga & Anime, so as long a this isn't too slushy, I might check it out one day. I do have Ah! My Goddess downloaded though... wink.gif

Thanks for the compliment Benoit, I was a little worried my post rambled on and didn't really tell people too much. I was also worried about giving too much away about what happens in the story which is why I kept some bits shorter and didn't go into too much detail.

I can't say whether either of you two would like it as I am clearly not you, but I really do like it a lot. I like it because it's not your typical action stuff, it's more about relationships and also I find it good that the women in the story are strong characters, yes they have their problems but they don't always have to rely on a man to solve them. I have found in much of the Japanese stuff I have seen they do often show the women as helpless people who always need to be rescued or are the ones being abused, so it's nice to see the guy getting abused.

Yeah, I'm sure you like the guy being abused... wink.gif

Actually, most of Anime's action heroes are females so there should be plenty of characters and shows to appeal to you.

You're review is fine Eve. You explained the basic story and put over some of the characters without spoiling it for anyone. Good job. And well done on 300 posts! biggrin.gif

I watched the first volume of Love Hina. Maybe it's because I wasn't totally in the right mood to watch it but it didn't grab me as much as other Animes have. I think it was a little repetitive with the girls constantly beating up poor Keitaro when he was mostly innocent. I know that is supposed to be the main source of the humour but it wore a bit thin quickly for me.

Even though I found the charcters a bit standard I must admit I did like Motoko the Kendo girl. The Hyperactive girl Su annoyed me a bit, although i thoght it was funny when she ran down the school corridor in a Mecca suit!

Hopefully the story will move forward a bit more in later volumes as so far it's been Keitaro being beaten up and little else. And I hope the that Naru or whomever hurrie sup and decides whether they fancy Kietaro or not.

Eve, as you like this you should like Negima (which is by the same author Ken Akamatsu) and Chobits which has a similar animation style.

Not sure if I want to see this OVA, I think I have grown recently in my Anime experience and these kind of Anime shows no longer interest me.

You mean you're becoming an Anime snob already? wink.gif

Don't you want to know if Keitaro and Naru get it on or not?

No I'm not becoming an anime snob, I just prefer the action type anime to the Harem comedies right now.

I probably will still try to watch it just to find out what happens and as it is only 3 episodes it shouldn't be too much, but I just won't be rushing out to find it.

Been catching up on this series (waiting on the last volume) and it has got better over time but the storylines are still too random to make any sense.

Still quite a fun show although I now have the keyboard riff from the opening theme song stuck in my head!
