This is one of the most popular Anime series of recent years and justifiably so.

Brothers and trainee alchemists Edward and Alphonse Elrich attempt to use their powers to transmute the soul of their dead mother and bring her back to life. However, this act is forbidden and as per the laws of equivalent trade in alchemy, Ed loses his right arm and left leg while Al lost his entire body. Ed managed to save Al's soul by transmuting it into a suit of armour.

Fuelled by the legend of the Philosopher's Stone which they believe will help them restore their original bodies, the brothers set off on a long journey of self discovery, heart ache and moral dilemmas. Ed become the youngest State Alchemist at the age of 12 and in that role as a part of the military, he and Al encounter many fellow alchemists abusing their powers for thier own gain and not help people. The further the journey takes them the darker their discoveries become and as their fame grows they become targets from various other parties interested in the Philosopher Stone.

There is so much going on in this 51 part series, with the story moving at a fair pace with multiple layers unfolding making this an addictive experience. The characters are well defined and multi-dimensional making you either care for them or despise them depending on the role they've been assigned. There is a lot of philosophical and moral musings put forth but never to the point of being overbearing or preachy. There is also a lot of humour (especially when people point out how short Ed is) and some great action scenes.

A full length film Fullmetal Alchemist the Movie: Conqueror of Shamballa was released in Japanese cinemas in 2005 and will be released on DVD over here in the UK soon.

I highly recommend this great fantasy series if you haven't seen it and look out for my review of the final DVD volume soon on the main CPC movies website. wink.gif

I was going to put a post about this up but decided not to :), im not a big fan of this at all, i have a tin boxed with several dvds of the anime but after watching the episode with the girl and dog, and i believe her father destroyed them to make some kind of monster with the pair,it really turned me away from it,espicially at the end when the murderer killed the Nina Chimera(?) something like that, it was really sad and put me right off as it was quite cruel thing to do, as she was a very cute and sweet girl and the dog to,the effort into the story with the main characters friendship with them made it heartbreaking towards the end.Im never good with that kind of thing so i much prefer more lighthearted stuff!

You can't write off an entire series for one episode.

And if you had watched further you would have seen the repercussions of the father's actions and the follow up to that particular storyline arc. The father didn't go unpunished and we learn about the real struggle the murderer has to deal with - rightly or wrongly.

The whole point as the story progresses is Ed and Al discovering just how alchemy is being abused by others and how that affects their own decision to continue to find the Philosopher's Stone. Remember nothing is glorified in Anime - there are always consequence for the actions of the individuals be they good or bad - it's called karma.

Besides, Nina was a the usual annoying squeaky voiced brat that they always portray kids as in Anime! wink.gif

I can still watch the rest of the shows of course Mib,as i mentioned,i have a few dvds of them but from that single episode,i dont know, i just found it really really cruel,i thought nina and her dog were adoreable myself, very cute and they really were very innocent and gentle characters,it surprisingly shocked me what happened to them at the end,it made me weep actually ^-^.The reason i didnt want to continue watching was because i would expect more of that kind of stuff in future episodes and as i really didnt like what happened with Nina,i really didnt want to have to see that again, it just makes me sad really :).But the story is very intresting and the animation is excellent, perhaps ill give it another chance in the future. It just surprised me how dark the show really could be.

Dude, if you thought what happened to Nina was bad (even though you didn't actually see anything) then don't watch Elfen Lied! You'd probably top yourself! wink.gif

I'm about 30 episodes into the series now and I can assure you that thus far no more little kids get badly harmed, killed or turned into chimera. They should do but don't. biggrin.gif

Nice stuff Mib! As for the show, iv watched some further episodes and its actually a very good show and thankfully not much in the way of killing little girls and dogs (i really felt sad when i saw
that before because its horrific to know that such an innocent girl and her dog where murdered,i know its just an anime but..its horrible!).Have read about efin lied in the other thread, dont think ill be checking that one out anytime soon as you said, i cant stand movies, animes, shows ect that feature truly heartbreaking things like that.Anyhow im Starting to enjoy FMA anyway so will hope to get further episodes in the future.

I've started watching this on the Anime Channel and I am having a little trouble getting into it, maybe it is because I missed the first few episodes or maybe I am just suffering from Anime overload.

I must say I do like the character design in this, very cool style.

Yes it does help if you watch from the start.

The series jumps about a bit from around episode three where it flashes back to when the Elrich brothers grew up and learned about alchemy and when they made the error of trying to transmute their mother back to life.

You get a few more episodes of their first days joining the military and their first missions then it settles down and returns on track to telling the story in "real" time.

I am really enjoying this now, apart from missing the occasional episode due to problems with sky+ recording.

I think that I'll be adding these DVD's to my christmas list. I have found that up to volume 15, is there only 15 volumes? or am I missing some?

Oops, I was looking at the books and not the DVD's!

As I said in the other thread there are 13 volumes (I reviewed volume 13) on DVD while the Manga continues. Don't forget the film which ties up a lot of the loose ends of the series.

Why can't they just make a single box set of the whole lot, it would be so much easier.

I have found all 13 DVD's and the movie thanks.

There is one in Japan (and I think in the US) but we'll have to wait for one over here.

But at 13 discs that's a lot of money for a box set - triple figures at least.

well I put that bit in the spoiler tags so it wouldn't ruin it if people hadn't seen it yet.

I missed the episode you was talking about that upset you, but I have seen the guy involved in that episode, he seems really creepy.

I have watched back some episodes that that I missed early on in this series. It was the episode with Nina Tucker and it had me in tears.

I saw the later episode so I knew what was going to happen with her and it made it a very emotional and upsetting episode. 031.gif

Conqueror of Shamballa is a good film that ties up a lot of the loose ends of the series but a lot of people found the final act a bit cheesy. My review is on this page HERE  wink.gif

As mentioned in another thread, I now have Conqueror of Shamballa on DVD to watch. I just want it to sort out the ending of the FMA series that I was really dissapointed with after some really great episodes.

The news we've all been waiting for, couresty of AnimeNewsNetwork:

The wraparound jacket band on the 20th volume of Hiromu Arakawa's Fullmetal Alchemist manga will confirm on Friday that a new television anime series is in the works. A new anime series was a topic of much fan discussion for several months, but it was thrust into a more public spotlight last month when a management document was purportedly leaked from the BONES anime studio. The document listed Fullmetal Alchemist animator Yasuhiro Irie as "Hagane 2 kantoku" (Iron/Fullmetal 2 director).

After the purported leak, BONES President Masahiko Minami posted an official statement that said that no file with this same formatted information existed within the company. When asked about the possibility of a sequel to Fullmetal Alchemist or Darker than BLACK (another BONES anime), Minami told ANN, "It hasn't been decided yet. We are interested in doing them. As original science-fiction works, they were extremely fascinating. With these kinds of dramatic story lines, I feel that there's a lot we could do potentially."

Viz Media will publish the 17th volume of the manga version in North America this October, while FUNimation Entertainment released both the first television series and its theatrical movie finale.

I'm surprised there hasn't been a boxed set of the series released over here yet like there has been in Japan. But at 13 discs it would be pretty pricey.

Yes a box set of this would be pricy at 13 discs, but not as pricy as buying all 13 discs individually.

I would want this boxset!
