A new film reviving the cult 1990s TV series The X-Files is moving closer to being made, according to reports.
David Duchovny, one of the show's stars, has told reporters he will receive a script next week. Duchovny and co-star Gillian Anderson are both "on board" to reprise their roles as alien-hunting special agents Mulder and Scully, he said. The script has been written by creator Chris Carter and writer Frank Spotnitz, according to the Hollywood Reporter. The pair co-wrote the first X-Files movie, which came out almost a decade ago. The original thriller series was a hit when it ran from 1993-2002, winning three Golden Globes for best TV drama. Duchovny was speaking at the Television Critics Association press tour, promoting his new comedy Californication, in which he plays a novelist struggling with a complicated private life.

Personally I was never a fan of the X Files so Im not that bothered.  Anyone here a fan?  Does this news excite you.  Wasn't Duchovny's character taken away by aliens or something at th end of the ;ast series?

I was never a fan of X-Files and I never understood how Gillian Anderson was ever considered sexy either.

Latest update from BBC.COM

Filming on the second X Files movie is to begin on 10 December, 20th Century Fox has announced.
The film will see David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson reprise their famous roles as alien-hunting FBI agents Mulder and Scully.

Series creator Chris Carter will direct the as-yet unnamed film when production begins in Vancouver, Canada.

The first X Files feature film was released in 1998 as a spin-off to the successful cult TV series.

Fox also announced the sequel will be released on 25 July 2008 in the US.

'Supernatural thriller'

The script, written by Chris Carter and Frank Spotnitz - who also co-wrote the first X-Files movie - is being kept a close secret.

All that is being revealed is that it is a "supernatural thriller" and will develop the complicated relationship between Mulder and Scully.

The original cult series was a hit when it ran from 1993-2002, winning three Golden Globes for best TV drama.

The first X Files film grossed $187m (£90m) worldwide.

CAN NOT WAIT X files transcended mainstream tv and sci fi like no tv show has done before or since. Granted later episodes were not up to the first 5 or so years but everything goes stale after a while. Now we have had no x files for nearly 5 years so the clamouring is there again. This truly should be massive.

I was a big fan of The X-Files, in particular the earlier seasons. I thought it got to the point where there were too many 'conspiracy theory' themed episodes and not enough 'Monster-of the Week' episodes. I found the conspiracy storylines far too complicated and involved, whereas the MotW episodes such as 'Squeeze' and 'DPO' were far more entertaining. I have a feeling the new movie will be conspiracy-based, and will leave a lot of people leaving the cinema scratching thier heads wondering what it was all about!

Apparently though the new movie is completly conspiracy free. Think about it from the movie studios point of view who will be financing the film- would you want a conspiracy theme that is overly complicated and will appeal only to the die hard Phillie who even then has forgotten most of it because it was 5 years ago or lost interest because it was so ridicolous by the end that they lost interest. Or...............would you want a good old fashioned jump on jump off movie that features 2 much loved characters in a movie anyone could enjoy even if they have never seen X files? Bit of a no brainer is it not?

This now has a full title which is.... (News from I watch stuff)

Outside of "the truth is out there" and "hey, nerd!", few words are as ingrained in the minds of X-Files superfans as "I want to believe." The saying was clearly written on a poster in Mulder's office, and the sentiment was a running theme throughout the series. So I guess it only makes sense that creator Chris Carter has chosen X-Files: I Want to Believe as the full, lengthy title of his new movie. As he explained:

It's a natural title. It's a story that involves the difficulties in mediating faith and science. 'I Want to Believe.' It really does suggest Mulder's struggle with his faith.

News on the X Files: I Want To Believe. I will source the trailer later... (From Empire)

Who would have thunk it? After years of searching for the truth, finding the truth and then eventually losing the truth, the truth it seems was in Billy Connollys brain all along.

Thats right, The Big Yin, as tabloids are wont to call him, seems to have all the answers in the upcoming sci-fi sequel The X-Files: I Want To Believe not that youll get any just yet of course.
20th Century Fox has revealed the new trailer for Mulder and Scullys big-screen return and judging by Connollys presence in the promo hes playing a major part in the proceedings.

Obviously there are still very few plot nuggets about Chris Carters latest foray into the shadowy world of the ex-FBI agents (the trailer stays pretty schtum), but its all looking suitably covert and, well, spooky - plus that theme tunes still pushes our nostalgia buttons.

What we do know is that I Want To Believe finds Fox Mulder (David Duchovny) continuing his quest for that pesky truth and Dana Scully (Gillian Anderson) is dragged along for the ride so no change there then.

Sequel news from Filmstalker:

With The X Files: I Want to Believe getting a fairly luke warm reception so far, you would think plans for a third film could be on hold. Turns out not so much, it could be a third X Files film is made and released on DVD.

I loved The X Files on TV, but I'm not sure I want it to resort to straight to DVD films.

The X Files: I Want to Believe (Filmstalker review) was the second film of the series, and both stars were already talking about a possible third film. And despite fairly modest box office success it may still happen. Dread Central through Screen Rant say a third is still a possibility, but without a cinema release:

' I understand - there was room for improvement and there still might be. I work for Screaming Death Monkey and Spotnitz - the TERRIFIC Frank Spotnitz - told us this week that the team have already spoken about the next X-Files film. Its likely the next release will go direct to DVD - but theyre working on the assumption theyll have a similar budget.'

Screaming Death Monkey are a production company who did work on special effects for The X Files: I Want to Believe. It's strange, I watched The X Files religiously on TV, and made an effort to see the first film. But by the time I went to watch the latest one this week in the cinema, it was no longer showing. It all seems a bit low key this time.

Until I've seen it I can't really comment on whether a third one is a good idea or not. What about you, should a third X Files film be done if it's heading straight to DVD? Or should this be the end for the films altogether?

Seriously, they need to let this die. They've missed the boat now even when the firstmovie came out it was about 24 months too late. Move on or get yourself some new agents and re-launch...

Not even that will work. This is a dog that has very much had it's day. David Duchovney should stick to that OK Californication show...
