This board is home to quite a few enthusiasts for all thing Japanese...what are your favourite Japanese things, it could be people, places, things...anything...
My picks, in no particular order...
1. Neon - Japanese cities at night are a feast of neon lit colour, an evening walk through Shinjuku or Akihabara is a whirl of Bladerunner style neon, just amazing.
2. Battle Royale - Gets better every time I watch it, just incredible movie,
3. Aki Hoshino - This top heavy temptress of course has that amazing figure, but its her kawaii face and loveable personality that make her special!
4. Respect - Even crossing the road in Japan is an experience filled with mutual respect, the whole culture is about that. Its something that Britain really lacks.
5. Mariko Yoshida - Joshi is amazing, and for me Mariko is its ultimate exponent. So skilful, charismatic, and hot too.
6. Cherry - Up and coming Joshi star, kawaii pixie face combines with a totally buff body, and lots of pink!
7. Shinjuku Gyoen - Love this park in the heart of Tokyo's vast urban landscape, its beautiful, thrilling to walk in the park, and see the skyscapers surrounding it, and feel your in paradise!
8. Nintendo - Kings of videogames, like my Wii, LOVE my DS Lite, so inventive, original, Japanese!
9. Shinkansen - The fabled bullets train's are a classic Japanese design, sleek, futuristic.
10. Takeshi's Castle - Utterly silly, but sometimes hilarious slice of Japanese gameshow weirdness. Always a good laugh.

I'm no Japanese expert but I agree wholeheartedly with you Gl. Also, I'd like to add Lost in Translation to this list. This is kind of how I imagine japan to be, with me being the Bill Murray of the equation. The kind of not understanding what is going on around me and embracing it all anyway.
I do think we need a Takeshi's Appreciation Thread, with your favorite games etc... GL wanna start it?
About Lost in Translation, I like the Karaoke scene a lot, and the shots of the aforemention neon-lit streets are amazing.
I liked the film a lot more the second time I saw it, its quite moving at the end, and has a lot to say about loneliness, and finding someone in the world who really gets you...its has its flaws, but is well worth a look.
I was amazed that the bizarre show Murray goes on is a real show, I saw it in Japan.
Iv never actually seen lost in translation, because iv never been a big bill murray fan mainly but i should check it out myself.I always make sure to be prepared when i go to Japan, i always arrange my stay first, where and when to meet my friends and dates of Joshi shows and such so i always make sure to plan out what i do ^^ Im sure your the same Glowlad. Another thing i love about japan is how clean and tidy every place is, its really nice to go out and about and not worry about broken bottles on the street and such.Ah i wish i could have had it but the Game Centers in japan are fantastic! oh and the girls....^^.
Thanks again for all the feedback, there are so many thing to love about Japan!
Totoro, Lost in Translation is hated by some enthusiasts for Japan, some even suggest its an anti-Japanese film. Some of the early culture shock stuff is a bit dubious, but I think in the end the movie comes through, its haunting sad...actually the end for me reminds me of the desolation I felt on having to leave Tokyo, that longing to stay...thats not what the movie is really about, but its what it means to me! When I said goodbye to the hotel staff I was nearly in tears, I wanted to stay forever!
I might try to check it out then Glowlad :),for some reason its never been a movie iv been intrested in but ill have to watch it if its as good as you said.Yep Japan is indeed wonderful,an amazing place! The only thing i do have a little problem with is some of the traditional japanese food which really made me ill when i eat so i usually stuck to simple fast foods or noodles for dinner which was kind of my host family but id love to be able to adapt to eating foods like sushi,Natto,Okonimiyaki ect ect.
I love the meloncholness of the film, the end scene is one of the greatest 'what happened' moments in movie history, bit like Cassablanca and Gone With The Wind.
The relationship between Bill Murray & Scarlett Johansson is so sweet it is almost perfect. I also, don't think the film is anti Japan, but actually Murrays characters confusion with being in a different culture which he doesn't get and the world and his career is passing him by, we are seeing this from his viewpoint in the third person.
It's also about lonley souls meeting in a collision of fate.
This is one of my all time favs I could go on about this for ages but I won't coz I'll bore you all....
1) the bullit train 2) mount fuji 3) sumo 4) the work ethic 5) the way they build for earth quakes 6) the people are so polite 7) the electroincs 8) samuri swords 9) manga 10) the cars
