Two high school students Kei and Kato are killed while saving a hobo who has fallen onto the subway tracks. Thye are transported to a room in post-death limbo, along with other recently deceased people, in the middle of which is a large black sphere known as Gantz. They are then all given the task of kiling criminal aliens on earth in a kill or be killed game. If they survive they recieve points for their actions and the total score of 100 points alows them to live again without being called upon by Gantz. However, if they die they are gone for good.

This is a brutally violent and unashamedly graphic Anime that was even censored on Japanese TV but it's for all to see here on DVD. Gantz doesn't pull any punches in it's depiction of mindless violence, nudity and sex (there is a dog that greets a naked girl but not by licking her hands...) and for the most part the killing seems totally gratuitous until the very last episode.

There may not appear to be a central theme to the show but it does question how different people view life and death, their reaction to being dead yet still alive, and the justification of killing for thier own safety.

If you have the stomach this is an interesting show to check out.

i read all about the Gants on wikipedia and it really made me feel like i must see this series,tho im a bit puzzled by the absence of a second season;
seems it stays true to the original manga as well which is always a good thing in my book.
