WO.com:

Sam Vazquez, who never recovered from a knockout at the hands of Vince Libardi on 10/20 in Houston, became the first documented MMA fatality in North American history. He was 35. Vazquez passed away Friday night in Houston. No cause of death has been released. Vazquez, a few weeks after his knockout, suffered a major stroke which he was unable to recover from.

Yes, I've heard about this. It has been discussed on different boards, and I was actually about to post it on here when I saw this thread.

That's really sad. We all knew that it was coming, but I really never wanted it to. I love this sport too much to see someone get hurt this way. I urge you all to keep him and his family in your prayers, and don't just throw this story by the wayside. It's really f'd up.

Deaths are bound to happen in Full contact Sports. I'm suprised it never happened back in the embrionic stages of MMA when UFC were doing the No rules shit.

This guy is obviously unlucky but that's the chances you take in being in a sport such as this.
I hope his name isn't crapped on by the media in an attempt to destroy the sport he obviously loved.

Yes, deaths are inevitable, but I think that there is a reason that this is the first death ever in an MMA match. The fighters don't go in there trying to kill each other, and most of them are highly trained in martial arts forms that specifically do not condone trying to hurt another person. I took jiu jitsu and karate for a few years earlier in my youth, and they always stressed to us to not use martial arts to try to hurt someone.

That's why I also hate when I hear a fighter saying "I'm going in there to hurt him." That's not what this sport is about. This sport is about trying to outmanuever the other man and to defeat him with brains and not brawn. That's why I love it so much.
