I'm kind of surprised that I haven't started this thread earlier.
This is for discussion of all topics related to my CPC Movies column, McKinney on MMA. I will also use it as an archive for previous editions of my column.
First up, I have a new column for December. The link is below, and so is the teaser.
Preview of WEC 31 and HDNet: Reckless Abandon After an exciting finale to the sixth season of The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) this past weekend, I think its safe to say that the state of mixed martial arts is definitely good. Even with some disappointing and sad news in the sport, such as UFC lightweight champion Sean Sherk being stripped of his title for testing positive for steroids and MMAs first death in 35-year-old Sammy Vazquez, the sport is still growing rapidly. And thats why we are having more and more great events, even outside of the UFC. Cases in point are the two events on the docket this week. First up on Wednesday is the best card in World Extreme Cagefighting (WEC) history with WEC 31. There are three title fights on this card, plus the debut of former UFC lightweight champion Jens Pulver in both the WEC and the 145-pound featherweight division. And then on Saturday, Mark Cubans HDNet organization holds their second big event. They have some notable big names on this card, and it seems as though they are growing by the day. Signings of guys like Jason Mayhem Miller, Frank Trigg, and Yves Edwards have been huge for this budding company. Here is the preview of the both events, with my picks for each fight.

A lot of fans of the UFC have been up in arms about the main event for next Saturdays UFC 78 event in New Jersey. Originally, the main event was supposed to be a lightweight title match between champion Sean Sherk and B.J. Penn. But that was squashed after Sherk tested positive for steroids after his last title defense in July against Hermes Franca. As it stands now, Sherks appeal is scheduled to be heard on November 13 by the California State Athletic Commission. For the time being, the UFC has also announce an interim lightweight title match between the top two contenders, Joe Stevenson and Penn, to take place in Newcastle, England at UFC 80. After the Sherk vs. Penn matchup didnt pan out, the UFC tried to set up the rematch from UFC 73 between Rashad Evans and Tito Ortiz. But Ortiz apparently wants more money, and that fight didnt pan out either. So it stands that we have the main event of Rashad Evans vs. Michael Bisping, possibly for a shot at Quinton Rampage Jackson and the undisputed light heavyweight title.
