A thread for the Robcop remake that MGM commisioned. I do have to ask why on this one? THe original still holds up even now and after 2 failed sequels (RC2 was OKish, 3 awful), 2 failed TV Shows (well Prime Directive was OK) this remake is bound to be made in the 12a/15 bracket which means the films strength in the uber violence will be inevitably be watered down. That means Murphy's death is sure to be washed over thus negating the effect of the film... Oh well.
Anyway for all things Robocop new and old, heres the place.
i liked RC1 & 2 - some of the scenes were very funny.
the best was (i tink at the end of the 1st flim - i will be corrected) was when RC could not arresrt the villlain....... ( wont spoil the rest ) but the resoulton to that was very very funny.
RC remake i say NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO.
The idea behind that was to cross promote with Robocop 2 although quite how this was going to encourage wrestling fans to see the film I have no idea. Doing it on TV instead of PPV would have been more prudent (even if still unsuccessful).
Some rather excellent news concerning this remake. It is to be directed by Darren Aronofsky!
From Variety:
Darren Aronofsky has signed on to direct and David Self is penning a new installment about the hero whose tagline is "part man, part machine and all cop." "RoboCop," which is being fast-tracked for a 2010 release, becomes the first potential tentpole to come together since Mary Parent took the reins of MGM in March. Aronofsky's involvement has been one of the worst kept secrets, with rumors rampant in the blogosphere that "The Fountain" helmer was eyeing the project.
For those of use worried that the new RoboCop film could be made with a child friendly audience in mind, worry not. It looks like the plan is to stick to the original films, when it comes to levels of violence anyway. Nice.
The new film sounds better all the time, a decent director and no watering down. Could turn out alright.
One of the producers of the new RoboCop, who also worked on the original, Mike Medavoy, told MTV Movies Blog that the plan was to go for an R rated film.
'Well I was involved with the original Robocop, and it was an R, and the likelihood is that this will be an R. Its likely to be an R unless the director cuts back on some of it.'
Let's hope Darren Aronofsky doesn't. A child friendly RoboCop would be laughable. It doesn't look like they plan to film with 3-D in mind either, with Medavoy saying:
'I dont think thats even come up.'
Medavoy and one of his fellow producers, say that the reimagining as they call it will stand on it's own and not be linked to the previous films. He also told MTV Movie News the reason for making a new film, and why now.
'The themes of machines and technology, for instance, that's certainly become even more prevalent today in terms of man giving up certain things to his creations and his technology and his reliance to that. It's pretty provocative stuff. You've got people today with all kinds of different implants and mechanical implants. Where does that person become no longer human? After the first one? After 50 percent of the brain gets replaced? A lot of the themes that we dealt with in the original are still very interesting to us'
So what do you think, feeling any better about a reimagined RoboCop? Do you agree with the reasons for returning to the character?
