Yes Tron is getting a sequel after all these years. The forerunner to CGI movies is back. Tron is another of those movies of my youth that I waited and waited for a sequel until I gave up hope....

Anyway this on the title of the new movie from I watch Stuff .com

Yesterday, a surprise clip shown at Comic Con gave attendees their first glimpse at Disney's sequel to Tron. Besides revealing that Jeff Bridges was willing to reduce himself to reprising his role, the most insanely stupid title ever was unveiled.

Can you guess which of these ridiculous options it is? (Hint: it's far more ludicrous than the Fast and Furious title, including all the fakes ones I made up.)

- Tron 2.0
- Trn
- 2ron
- Tr2n
- 2222 2 (Tron 2)
- Tron.blogspot.com
- YouTron
- Tron's MySpace Account
- 2 Tron 2 Tronious
- inTRONet
- Tron. You know, Jeff Bridges, Bruce Boxleitner... Tron! Ask your dad or something.

It's Tr2n! TR2N! How is this acceptable? A "2" is not an "O". In no way is a "2" an "O". The reason zero is able to be represented by a circle, similar to an "O", is that there is no way of confusing it with another number, such as a two, because they look nothing alike. Are they serious about this? I really think they should consider inTRONet.

Tron 2.0 would have been better.

Even though I have seen this film outside of the SFX it was a largely forgettable film. I can't remember what ti was a bout anyway...

A bloke who was fired from a Software firm breaks in with his friend (Who works at said company) to find a programme that has gone missing and has been authored to the companies dodgy CEO. He gets sucked into the computer and is forced to take part in the games he created, only if he dies in there, he dies.

Its a lot better than that sounds...

Update time that may please some of you (from Jim Hill via PWIPop):

It's been a week now since that TR2N teaser trailer ran at Comic-Con. And Disney & sci-fi fans are desperate for additional information about this Summer 2010 release.

Well, let me share some info that I'm sure will send all of you TRON fanboys out there straight off the Game Grid. Guess who's the real power-behind-the-throne (The Master Control Program, if you will) on this particular Walt Disney Pictures production? Would you believe John Lasseter?

Yep, the Chief Creative Officer of Pixar and Walt Disney Animation Studios has quite the soft spot when it comes to the original TRON. Lasseter still remembers when he first saw this Steve Lisberger film. Which was back in 1981 when John was just a lowly animator toiling away on Mickey's Christmas Carol.

One lunch hour while wandering around the Disney lot, Lasseter came upon the trailers where all of the 16 X 20 Kodalith cels that were used in this 1982 production were stored. And it was here that John first saw TRON's lightcycle sequence. And as Lasseter looked at this CG sequence ...

'It absolutely blew me away! A little door in my mind opened up. I looked at it and said, `This is it! This is the future!' '

Mind you, John was quite taken with the look of TRON (as well as -- of course -- that film's use of computer animation). But as for that movie's storyline ... Lasseter wasn't really a fan. He felt that Lisberger had missed some obvious opportunities to create a truly compelling piece of entertainment. Something that would have touched an audience's emotions as it dazzled their eyes.

Which is why -- even though Steve (i.e. TRON's original director & co-writer) has spent the past five years developing a script for a sequel -- none of that material will now be used in the production of TR2N.

Don't get me wrong, folks. Lasseter is still extremely respectful of all the groundbreaking work that Lisberger & his production team did on the first TRON. Which is why Steve will receive a co-producer credit on this 2010 Walt Disney Pictures release. But as for Lisberger having any real creative input on the sequel ... GAME OVER !, man.

'So -- if Steve isn't working on the TR2N screenplay anymore -- who is then?, 'you ask. Well ... Allegedly at John's insistence, Disney hired Eddie Kitsis & Adam Horowitz to create a script for this sequel. Given their long association with Lost, Kitsis & Horowitz have lots of experience when it comes to guiding colorful characters through surreal settings. Which made Eddie & Adam an obvious choice for the TR2N assignment.

And if Lisberger's no longer slated to helm the TRON sequel, who's Disney now going to get to direct this movie? Joseph Kosinski. Who has yet to actually direct a full-length feature film but has created some award-winning commercials for Saab, Nike and X-Box.

In fact, if you want to get some sense of the visual look that Joseph wants to bring to TR2N, click on the above links. Or -- better yet -- check out Kosinski's animated architectural renderings. These will give you a better sense of Joseph's eye. The way this guy moves a camera. Which offers a hint of how truly dazzling a Kosinski-directed version of TRON could be.

Speaking of which ... To convince Disney executives that his vision for TR2N was commercially viable, Joseph spent six months working in secret with the folks at Digital Domain. Laboring to create a vivid, updated version of TRON's famous lightcycles. With the hope that this three-minute-long sequence would then prove to the suits that a sequel to this 26-year-old film would actually appeal to today's gamers.

Which brings us to Disney Interactive Studios' involvement in the TR2N project ... To help prime the pump for this potentially-hugely-profitable profect, Disney's gaming division actually released an Xbox 360 version of those classic arcade games, TRON and Discs of TRON, last summer. Given the huge number of units that were then sold to video game players as well as TRON fans ... It was clear that there are a lot of people out there who -- just like John Lasseter -- have a very soft spot in their hearts when it comes to this particular Walt Disney Productions release.

But that said ... There are still those at the Studio who are saying that it may be a mistake to release a TRON sequel 28 years after the fact.

Which is kind of ironic, given that Walt Disney Pictures' other big picture for 2010 is also a sequel. What film am I talking about? Toy Story 3 Which rolls into theaters nearly 15 years after the first Toy Story film debuted.

So what do you folks think? Do you think that TR2N has a better chance of becoming a truly entertaining motion picture now that you've learned that John Lasseter is shepherding this project? Or is it just too late for a TRON sequel to connect with today's audiences?

Another update from Ain't It Cool News:

Harry has a brief chat with Steven Lisberger (TRON) Regarding TR2N!!!

Hey folks, Harry here - and I'm about as happy as humanly possible. TRON is just about my favorite personal childhood movie. I love it for about every frame that flashes before my eyes, every sound effect and score second. And when Merrick posted that story with details from Jim Hill's piece on TR2N that Steven Lisberger was not involved in this new iteration of TRON... well, my soul grew a little, ever so slightly cold to the project.

But because I love TRON so much I was consoling myself with the knowledge that hopefully - the creative forces behind the film were respecting and honoring the fantastic vision of the life and soul we embed into our programs and the world in which they co-exist. Basically, I just didn't want to let go of the enthusiasm that the TR2N crappy pirated footage had given me. As I have compulsively rewatched it, and then heard from friends EVERYWHERE, that they were rewatching it endlessly... Man. This sort of tingly geekgasm isn't often found in our geeky little existence.

Well... As I was checking email this afternoon, at 1:18pm - I saw a subject line: Tr2n/Lisberger. I glanced at the 'From:' and it said, STEVEN LISBERGER!!!

GEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEK!

I click on the email and read:

'Hey Harry-

Jim Hills piece on Tr2n sounds very dramatic but actually we are trying to put all the drama into the script. I can assure you I am very much involved with Tr2n. Its a collaborative effort just like the first film was. We have a very talented and dedicated young group and I am doing my best to inspire them as much as they are inspiring me. The trailer, as amazing as it is, is only the beginning.

All the best,

Steven Lisberger'

The email also contained his home and cell numbers... It only took about 22 seconds for me to realize I could call those numbers and speak to the man that created TRON and the world he lived in. I'm sad to say that I didn't actually think about what I was going to say - It was more or less just a compulsive need to learn more. To talk to one of the guys that absolutely affected my noodles in a very geeky way.

Of course, I rang him at lunch with his wife, so we will pick up the conversation some time this weekend. But I did say that I wanted to clarify what his capacity was on TR2N and his response was:

'My capacity is to be the best creative force I can be on the project and a mentor - which is my job as Producer.'

And when I asked him about the work he's done developing a second TRON movie over the past few years and his screenplay, he commented that the development that he's headed up over the past 5 to 7 years has directly led to where the project is today, that it helped to breed the excitement with which the project is being pursued.

I then let him go back to lunch with his lovely wife, and we'll pick up this conversation some time this weekend, but I wanted to let all you programs out there to gain the knowledge that Lisberger is Producing and is creatively involved in TR2N!

Filmstalker clears the air following the above Jim Hill / AICN articles:

I wrote a story about what happened behind that Tr2n aka Tron 2 teaser that's been showing on Filmstalker, and still is, since it was first released on the Internet, and it was pretty much that Steve Lisberger, the original creator of Tron, had spent over five years developing a sequel and had been dropped by Disney.

Well not true tells Lisberger himself, in fact he's heavily involved in the project and will be working on the sequel to ensure that they keep that original feel and style.

Steve Lisberger publicly addressed the story that came out about him being dropped from the sequel with the following email to AICN:

'Jim Hills piece on Tr2n sounds very dramatic but actually we are trying to put all the drama into the script. I can assure you I am very much involved with Tr2n. Its a collaborative effort just like the first film was. We have a very talented and dedicated young group and I am doing my best to inspire them as much as they are inspiring me. The trailer, as amazing as it is, is only the beginning.'

He goes onto say that he will be a producer and mentor on the project pushing the creativity of the film. He also said that the work he's been doing over the last seven years has directly contributed to the way the film is today and where the film is going.

You know as great as that sounds, he's still a producer, and his script is not being used. That doesn't mean that the sequel will be worse than the original, and it could really mean that he has a strong creative role on the sequel, we shall have to wait and hear more from him as he reveals the full story later this weekend.

What I really hope though is that we hear about the film, not so much about the controversy of his involvement. When are we getting to see something, and when are Disney going to take advantage of the marketing hype from that Comic-Con trailer and release the full thing?

A couple of updates from Filmstalker:

At Comic Con earlier this year a teaser trailer debuted for the Tron sequel Tr2n. The internet went crazy for it. Jeff Bridges, back in another Tron film. Who'd have thought it. Well now Bridges has been talking about the sequel.

He tells us why he signed up for the sequel, and how different it will be with todays technologies.

Tr2n is scheduled for release in 2010, and the trailer leaked onto the internet gave as an idea what to expect. Jeff Bridges is also returning, and he has been talking about what made him want to revisit Tron. He talked to The Guardian, through Coming Soon.

'Yeah, that's another unique, wild experience that was too good to turn down. Engaging in that world again feels just like it did all that time ago. Basically, I'm still a child, I love being childlike, and here was another chance to play with these crazy toys. And the cutting-edge technology makes it exciting. Doing the teaser trailer for Comic-Con, I had my first experience of motion capture. And that's turning the industry on its head. It's amazing being part of that.'

I'm excited to see the difference between the first and second due to the new technology available. It's one of the few films that can genuinely be improved upon with a sequel, simply due to the passing of time. Jeff Bridges also thinks that improved techniques will make a big difference.

'Well, when we made Tron there was no internet, no cellphones. But now we have motion capture, so I think we'll get a far more successful version of the story, which is someone literally getting sucked into a video game. When we did King Kong in the 70s, one minute you'd have a shot of Rick Baker in this big suit and then you'd cut to this 80ft stiff model, and they looked nothing alike. Compare to that Peter Jackson's King Kong the technology is there and they did a wonderful job. I thought they created a beautiful Kong. So I hope that'll be the same for Tron.'

I wonder how much difference around 28 years will make? Can't wait to find out. Are you looking forward to an updated Tron?

It seems that TR2N, that's the sequel to the superb eighties film TRON about a man pulled into the world inside a computer, will be filmed in stereoscopic 3D.

Now for me that's usually a let down because we end up seeing a film that concentrates on throwing things at the screen and making us feel like we're part of the action rather than developing a sTRONg script and film, however TR2N might go against that grain.

According to some comments that Joseph Kosinski, the director of TR2N, made over at AICN through JoBlo, it seems that the teaser sequence that we saw from ComicCon was filmed entirely in stereoscopic 3D and that the rest of the film will be too.

There are also some other reveals, such as Steven Lisberger, the co-writer and director of TRON, is onboard as a consultant which we already knew, the shooting of the film will be a two year process, and that in the first film they wanted the light cycle riders outside of the bikes but it proved too costly, and that's about it.

The big one for me is the 3D idea though. Usually this spells disaster for a film as it means throwing something together that is filled with action and things flying towards the audience, that's the depth of the imagination that the creatives have in bringing an audience into a film using 3D. I mean you just have to look at Journey to the Center of the Earth for the evidence of that.

However in the case of TR2N something else is happening, and I'm wondering if this is perhaps going to work out after all. Just watching the footage from ComicCon of the teaser brought back such great feelings from the original and really captured the imagination of the audience. This wasn't just speeding lightcycles towards the screen, in fact you would have been hard pressed to realise that it was in 3D, and usually it's very easy.

By the way the teaser footage from ComicCon is still online right here on Filmstalker.

Do you think TR2N will work in 3D? I'm beginning to think that the 3D will take a backseat, as it should, and we're going to get story and excitement above all, not just effects and flying towards the screen. This could actually work.
