Filmstalker brings us news on the rating for Kevin Smith's next film:
Seth Rogen and Kevin Smith are a little annoyed at the MPAA who seem to be shying away from anything sex related, after all that's what's causing everyone harm in the world today apart from those corrupting videogames, geez if only we didn't have sex and games consoles I think wars, gun and knife attacks would end. It's nothing to do with respect, self worth, and a terrible law and rehabilitation system.
Anyway, aside from the preaching, Kevin Smith's Zack and Mimi Make a Porno has received an NC-17, and while Smith has to sit and cut that down to an R rating from the MPAA, Rogen has spoken out about the double standards of the aging and retentive MPAA.
He called them completely hypocritical and went on to be quite vocal about their rating system:
'I honestly dont feel like its anything I havent seen some version of in a movie before...When I watch the movie, Im honestly shocked that, of all the movies Ive been a part of, this is the one that got an NC-17.'
To prove a point Seth Rogen talks about a scene in Pineapple Express as a comparison.
'I mean, we sell weed to 10-year-olds in this one, and no one gives a shit. All this movie [Zack and Miri] has to do is with sex and shit. To me its completely hypocritical that this would get an NC-17 rating.'
Yeah, that does sound crazy, but then it seems that a majority is obsessed with sex, and not in a good way, viewing it with the Victorian attitudes of dirty, evil and corrupting. You can probably guess the type already.
What's interesting about the comments over at Cinema Blend is that they now have to work hard to try and get that down to an R rating, after all Kevin Smith is contractually obliged to do that for this film.
However, that does mean we're going to get ourselves a decent DVD release for Zack and Mimi Make a Porno, but where do you make the stand? Do you just ignore the MPAA's madness and go see the cut version in cinemas, or do you decide to hold off and buy the DVD, hurting the film's sales in the first place which, in turn, goes through to the people behind the film.
Personally I would prefer to see the uncut version, but at the same time I'm aware that I'm hurting the film in the eyes of the studio and also those who made it. What will you do? See it anyway?
I wonder if this will get a rename for the UK release seeing as they usually wimp out in this area?
Yesterday's story that the new comedy from Kevin Smith, Zack and Miri Make a Porno, was getting an adults only NC-17 rating instead of the R that Smith was aiming for as was in his contract with the studio for making the film.
Well today we hear that the appeal to the MPAA has been successful and that the NC-17 has been lifted and an R rating granted in the U.S.
What surprises me in all this is Kevin Smith's comment about the NC-17, and it's a widely held belief within Hollywood, make an NC-17 film and it will fail.
'We didn't set out to make an NC-17 film. That's just commercial suicide'
That's the comment he made in the Yahoo News story.
Sure that restricts anyone under seventeen from seeing it - is that really commercial suicide? The vast majority of people going to the cinema are under seventeen? Wow, that means Hollywood is missing out on an absolutely massive demographic and are failing to pull them into the cinema.
According to Smith the MPAA were pushing back on two sex scenes in particular, and in order to try and get the film through with the R rating he went through several cuts and submissions, but finally reached a stalemate with the amount of cuts he was prepared to make.
Finally he stood before them in an appeal and talked them down to the R rating. Interestingly this is the third time he's done this, the first being Clerks and the second being Jersey Girl.
'They felt it was rather sexually graphic. My point is, it was comically graphic. All the sex in the movie with the exception of one scene is very cartoonish, very campyIt wasn't designed to titillate.'
Yes, but we're talking America and the MPAA, any mention of sex is enough to scare them into running down the streets screaming pillars of salt and the end of the world. Sure throw all the knives, guns and murders in a film you want, but mention or show the most natural activity in the world and you're in trouble mate.
Well the upshot is that the film has had the rating lowered and that Smith has shaved inches off Zack and Miri Make a Porno, which is actually great news for the studio too, because now they can double dip us on DVD - that means they can release the theatrical version of the film on DVD and a few months later release the Director's Cut which will include the full, uncut, NC-17 version.
So they're complaining that the film is getting a higher certificate which could be a blow to audiences. No offence but if you're making a film which involves people making a porno, then you're hardly aiming at the Hanna Montana demographic are you? What did they expect?!

What's really interesting about the Zack and Miri make a Porno trailer is that it is redband in the U.S. for one reason and one reason alone, the swearing. There's nothing in there that vaguely even resembles something sexual, well maybe Traci Lords blowing bubbles in an unusual way. Even that though is off camera and hinted at.
Watching the trailer though was a big disappointment because there were only two or three places that raised a smile for me, and one of them was seeing Traci Lords in the film. Mainly it's unsubtle and in your face.
I think the opening lines caught it best. It starts off really well and you can see where the joke is heading, and it's good, the anticipation of knowning what the joke is going to deliver builds:
"What do you do? What brings you here?" "I'm an actor" "Wow! Anything I've seen?" "Oh all sorts of movies with all male casts" "All male casts? Like Glengarry Glen Ross?"
You can see where the joke is going and I had, and even now typing it out and watching it again, have a smile on my face. Then, instead of something witty and clever, it just goes for overkill on the punchline. Well rather than me type it out I'll leave you to watch it, although do be advised that it is chock full of swearing, it is a Kevin Smith film after all.
That joke aside, which I think suffers from the problem much of American comedy does these days, unsubtle concentration on sexual and bodily function jokes, the rest of the Zack and Miri make a Porno trailer just doesn't seem to have any of the good bits from the film in it, nor does it really seem to fully tell the story of the film.
Going back to that opening scene for a moment, as it just caught my eye on pause there, there is a very cool thing happening there, something that might not be apparent on first watching. The poster behind them. Now that got a better smile than the joke.
And the controversy has already started as the poster for this film has been banned in the US says Filmstalker:
I really cant believe that this poster has the MPAA over in America so insulted that theyve banned it, after all theres nobody naked in it and all that we can see are the tops of two heads. Whats the big deal?
Of course we all know whats going on and what its suggesting, that two people are receiving oral sex, and thats much, much worse than seeing Angelina Jolie look sexy on the front of a poster holding a stonking great handgun and making it look sexy.
The poster has been banned in the U.S. and will only be getting seen in Canada, because it suggests oral sex, that terrible act that leads toermmwell sometimes a mess, perhaps bad breath, oh to be fair it can help pass sexually transmitted diseases.
Yet a huge handgun portrayed in a sexy manner? Despite the fact that I subscribe to the school of thought that believes we are far too quick to leap on censorship rather than solving problems within our society, even I have to admit that the handgun image should be further up the scale than this cheeky poster.
Of course in sexually repressed and god fearing countries you can understand people getting a bit hot under the collar about this one, after all their kids might be out having oral sex as soon as they see this. At least with other posters theyll only be out trying to steal their fathers unlocked guns and shooting them about.
Oh this world is sometimes a messed up place. If you think you can see this poster without turning to the person next to you and performing a lewd act that theyd probably really enjoy, then you can see the full poster over at Popwatch.
Me, I love oral sex, but Im not so keen on shooting guns these days, and this poster for Zack and Miri make a Porno looks as far from harmful as a fluffy little bunny.
