The oft mooted next Tarantino flick set in World War II now looks to be underway with an odd piece of casting....
"Hostel" director Eli Roth is on deck to play a baseball bat-swinging Nazi hunter in "Inglorious Bastards," the Quentin Tarantino-directed drama that begins production this fall in Europe for the Weinstein Co. and Universal Pictures.
Brad Pitt is in talks to play Aldo Raine, leader of a rogue band of Jewish-American soldiers who wreak havoc on the bad guys in Nazi-occupied France.
Roth is in talks to play Sgt. Donnie Donowitz.
Roth played a small role in Tarantino's "Death Proof" segment of "Grindhouse" and directed one of the fake movie trailers that played during the film. Tarantino was an executive producer and lent his name as a presenter on Roth's breakout directing hit, "Hostel."
Tarantino is expected to formalize his cast shortly.
Tarantino had planned to meet with Leonardo DiCaprio for the role of SS Col. Hans Landa, only to decide that the role should be played by a German actor.
So all relevant Tarantino chat for his next project in here please....
Interesting. Tarantino tends to work better with blockbuster casts so this could be good. And Pitt is always better in films of this gritty nature rather that Smiths/Oceans style films...
The casting for Quentin Tarantino's Inglorious Bastards looks to be calming down now from the initial excitement of having names such as Brad Pitt and Leonardo DiCaprio in talks and those early rumours of such names as Sylvester Stallone and Bruce Willis. Now we're hearing from Yahoo News that the next name in talks is one of the co-stars of the American The Office series, B.J. Novak.
And another round of casting news from Filmstalker:
Brad Pitt has officially signed up to Quentin Tarantino's Inglorious Bastards playing Lieutenant Adlo Raine, the head of the Jewish squad.
However the rumours haven't stopped there, Simon Pegg, Natassja Kinski and David Krumholtz are also in negotiations.
Yes, according to reports Simon Pegg, Natassja Kinski and David Krumholtz are the next in the line up for talks with Quentin Tarantino to get into his World War II film about a group of soldiers on the brink of being shot for various offences who get one last chance to redeem themselves, head deep within enemy lines and take on a near suicidal mission.
Of course they all say no and we go home with credits after five minutes. No! They say yes, and the mission is on.
The casting news for Inglorious Bastards comes from Reuters through Yahoo News, and while Brad Pitt is interesting, and Pegg and Kinski are certainly getting my interest going a little, but I have to say that the casting news of B.J. Novak and Eli Roth to date hasn't really done much for me. So far this cast is a pretty mixed bag, I was hoping for something that was akin to the Pulp Fiction casting in size and stature.
Of course there's more to come, so maybe there are some big guns being held in reserve, and maybe those in talks might not come through. We'll really have to wait and see.
What do you think of that casting list so far? Is this turning into the film you'd be interested in seeing?
Michael Madsen has been talking about the possibility of him being involved in Inglorious Bastards and the much talked about Pulp Fiction spin off, The Vega Brothers, and neither sounds that promising.
It seems that Quentin Tarantino has been verbally agreeing to a number of roles for him, but so far none of them are coming through.
When asked about Inglorious Bastards, and bear in mind that casting news is coming thick and fast right now, he says that it's a mystery.
'You'd have to ask Quentin. I know Tim Roth and I were attached to it for two or three years. He told me what my character's name was, and we talked a lot about it. But seeing he has this deal with The Weinstein Company and now they seem to be going to the studios, I'm not really sure. I'm hopeful there'll be a role in there for me somewhere.'
That's not great news from the Michael Madsen interview at Film.com. Then, when asked about The Vega Brothers he reveals that Quentin Tarantino has more than just a passing fancy for the idea, well he did have.
'I wouldn't say it's obviously not going to happen...It wouldn't be my decision not to do it. It would be John's, who would most likely resist the doing of that, of course forgetting that Quentin turned his life around and changed the course of his career. Quentin, at one time, told me The Vega Brothers could never happen ... because it would have to be a prequel and John doesn't look the same anymore. And neither do I.'
Well that sounds like bad news so far, but then he turns it around. After Tarantino returned from a short holiday he called him up:
'...and said, 'I know how we can make The Vega Brothers. You guys will be the twin brothers of Vincent and Vic and you're both coming back to L.A. to avenge the deaths of your brothers. You're both on a flight to Los Angeles and you don't know he even exists.' I thought that was a cool idea. There's a lot more on how he'd do that, but I couldn't reveal that to you. I'm all for it, though. I'd never say never.'
Well that sounds like it's a possibility, but we have to remember that this is Tarantino here, and his choice of projects can often feel rather, well, flighty. Then you have to think of how long he'd take to write the script and get it going, and if he'll have much pull when it comes round to it, after all he's remaking a Russ Meyer film.
Someone said to me the other day that Tarantino is too busy parodying himself to make something new and original. While I can see an element of that I have to disagree with films such as Kill Bill, but then the truth is that it's all been done before anyway, just not in the west with the big budget.
Perhaps we will see The Vega Brothers get made, but me, I'm very doubtful. As for Michael Madsen in Inglorious Bastards, well if he's going to be in Tarantino better hurry up.
More casting news.... Nastassja Kinski back on the big screening, well thats me sold.
Brad Pitt has closed his deal to star in "Inglorious Bastards," the WWII drama that Quentin Tarantino will direct for the Weinstein Co. and Universal.
Additionally, Nastassja Kinski is in early talks to play one of the sole female roles in the film. Casting the German-born actress jibes with Tarantino's habit of resuscitating dormant careers. Kinski, who has stayed away from mainstream American films for nearly a decade, would play a German movie queen.
Simon Pegg, David Krumholtz and B.J. Novak are also in talks to join the project. Pegg would play a British lieutenant, while Krumholtz and Novak would play Pitt's underlings.
You know I think we're going to find out that at release time this film really is going to be called Inglorious Basterds, however in the meantime sites are having fun with the titles of which new star is a Bastard and the latest is Mike Myers.
You know I remember hearing about this film ages ago and dream castings being thrown around such as Bruce Willis and Sylvester Stallone, but apart from the one big casting of Brad Pitt, now we're stepping down the ranks somewhat.
The latest addition of Mike Myers, as announced through Variety, playing a British General, hopefully not with one of his ludicrous accents and maybe playing it a little straighter.
So apart from the previously announced Brad Pitt, the other names aren't as heft as I had expected, Myers, Simon Pegg, Natassja Kinski David Krumholtz and the previous announcement of B.J. Novak and Eli Roth. Of course there's the talk of the old favourite Michael Madsen, but we'll have to see.
Sure there are a couple in there that are well known and are doing well in their various roles, but there's a decided lack of the huge named talent that we'd be expecting from Quentin Tarantino.
Perhaps there's nothing that can get me over that first touted cast that never came to be, however I just don't think that Inglorious Bastards is turning out to have the plethora of names that I had hoped for. Maybe I should look on the bright side, Pitt and Kinski.
Adam Sandler told RTÉ (Irish Televison) that he turned down a role in Quentin Tarantino's 'Inglorious Bastards'.
Speaking to RTÉ.ie whilst in Dublin to promote his latest movie 'You Don't Mess With The Zohan', Sandler said he had been approached by Tarantino to star in the movie but was forced to turn down the role due to other filming commitments.
Sandler had long been rumoured to take a major role in the Tarantino scripted movie which the director has been planning for nearly a decade.
Asked had he been in talks with Tarantino, he told RTÉ: "Yeah it's true. It is, and I read the script, it's fantastic. But I'm shooting at the very same time. I won't be able to do it. I'm doing a movie with Judd Apatow at the same time so that's not going to happen, but I did read it. It is awesome."
The 'Punch Drunk Love' star added that he was disappointed to have to turn down the role.
He said: "I know Quentin for a long time. We've been talking about doing it for years, for like five, six, seven years. Yeah it's definitely disappointing. I'd love to do it, but I just can't."
Adam Sandler out Mike Myers in? Im not sure which is the better of 2 evils... All they need now is cast Will Smith and the circle will be complete. Oh and Uma Thurman, being it's a Tarantino flick after all....
One rumoured cast member will not be appearing in Inglorious Bastards. Simon Pegg has said he won't be in it, due to scheduling conflicts. He will however be starring in a road movie, it's called Paul, and his co star from Spaced Nick Frost will also be in it. Greg Mottola will be directing.
THE OFFICEs B.J. Novak Says Hes Officially One Of Tarantinos BASTARDS!!
David Krumholtz and Simon Pegg may have fallen out of talks to join Quentin Tarantinos World War II epic Inglorious Bastards, but The Office star B.J. Novak says he signed a contract to appear in the movie Friday -- according to one fan who says he spoke to Novak following a weekend stand-up show in St. Louis.
LBJeff, a new and untested spy, reports:
'Whats up Herc,
Long time reader, first time writer. Anyways, I go to Washington University in St. Louis and last night BJ Novak came to do some stand up comedy. After the show I was fortunate enough to talk with him and ask a few questions.
He confirmed that he will be in QT's Inglorious Bastards, and that he had just signed the contract on Friday.
I asked him what that meant for Ryan on the Office and he said that Ryan would be in the first episode and we will know what happens to him.
He also said Toby will be back for that first episode and it will be "very funny."
I asked him about the spin-off and he said that if the improv group who opened for him went on stage to act out an Office spin-off, they would probably be closer than what they know right now. As you know, it will star Amy Pohler and he also said that it will probably not be a spin-off in the traditional sense, which was apparently all he knew or could say.
Surprisingly, to me at least, he got a great turnout of about 2,500 students and everyone seemed to have a good time. If you see any pictures of him online using a frog puppet, it was not photoshopped, but part of the act. He commented on how people would think that it was weird for him to have a puppet because the office is a "smart show."
He seemed genuinely excited for the next season of the Office as well as for IB, which he said starts shooting in October. He came off as a very smart and genuine guy and I hope that he kills in the movie. Oh, and when he asked where I saw that he was in talks for IB I said AICN and he laughed. I'll leave you with one of his many funny jokes:
Battered women?
Sounds delicious...but that doesn't make it right.'
If the report can be trusted, Novak joins Brad Pitt, Mike Myers and Eli Roth among actors confirmed for the cast.
Bastards follows a squad of angry, vengeful Jews assigned to infiltrate Axis-occupied Europe and kill as many Nazis as possible.
Quentin Tarantino's Inglorious Bastards has it's first female cast member. Diane Kruger has joined Brad Pitt, Mike Myers, Eli Roth and B.J. Novak. Kruger will play a German movie star. She was also in Troy with Brad Pitt. The news is from IMDB.
Has Quentin Tarantino cast the one last major unoccupied role in his WWII epic INGLORIOUS BASTARDS? Dark Horizons is reporting that Tarantino has cast Melanie Laurent, who you might remember from...well, nothing (unless, of course, you're a student of French cinema). Laurent would play Shoshana Dreyfus, a young Jewish women who flees to Paris where she runs a movie theater. With Brad Pitt and Christoph Waltz set as Aldo Raine and Hans Landa, Dreyfus was the last significant role to be cast.
It's probably the most pivotal in the movie, hence Tarantino taking his time to find the right actress. With the film pretty much all cast up (Eli Roth, Mike Myers, Samm Levine, Diane Kruger and BJ Novak also co-star), production is set to begin on October 13 in Germany. No release date has been set for the Universal/Weinstein film but Tarantino announced that he expects to bring the film to next year's Cannes Film Festival.
