Filmstalker has some spoilerific news on the alleged third Batman film:
**EDIT** - For some reason the spoiler tags aren't working so only scroll down and read on at your own discretion....
Part 1
Spoiler
No Two-Face in Batman 3? Not according to Aaron Eckhart there won't be, and while he might not know since he doesn't write, produce, direct or edit the film, he has asked someone he knows and they've suggested that won't happen.
Who is that person? Christopher Nolan, and he's surely got to know hasn't he? Well without the script being written or the idea even being broached we can't say no. Oh, and there are spoilers coming if you haven't seen the film yet.
However in the meantime Aaron Eckhart, who played Harvey Dent and Two-Face in The Dark Knight, says he's done for.
He is dead as a door nail...I asked Chris [Nolan] that question and he goes, "You're dead" before I could even get the question out of my mouth. "Hey Chris, am I?" "You're dead!" Alright, cool.
So that's what the thinking was at the end of The Dark Knight, but that was before the fan reaction to the character and the surge of opinion that would like to see him back in another film.
Part 2
Spoiler
The story from Coming Soon got over to Empire where the article slams the idea and pokes fun at those who are debating the idea of Two-Face being in the film, except they seem to forget the entire history of such films.
We see his corpse. Its not moving. Or breathing. So it's a corpse. We see his funeral. Funerals tend to be held when people are dead. The Dark Knight script, which is now online if you know where to look, states, quite categorically, that Dent is dead.
Oh come now Empire, haven't you been watching films and taking it all in? Characters who the audience thought were dead come back all the time.
First up, we don't see his corpse, that's an assumption. We see him lying still. From that distance and those shots I couldn't tell if anyone was breathing.
Secondly, I have never seen an on screen funeral of a character who turns out later in the film to actually be alive please note the heavy sarcasm of that statement that has happened time and time again, come on.
Lastly, and again feel free to don the hat of cutting and quite disgusted sarcasm here, sure the script may say he was dead but that was before the director made the film, the editor edited the film, the audience saw the film, the studio took the money, and the fans started the huge buzz about the return of Two-Face.
After watching that film I can totally see there being a chance for Two-Face to return. In fact listening to the dialogue at the end you could even be mistaken for thinking that Batman and Gordon were hiding the fate of Dent from the world.
However much I would like to see Two-Face again, I am liking the idea of a straight serial killer who leaves riddles as clues to the next, I really do like that, and it could make for a very effective return for Batman and to redeem himself in the eyes of Gotham.
Some interesting speculation for a future film reported by Filmstalker:
The wait for news on the next Batman film has thrown up another gem of speculation. This time the source is Frank Miller, and he would like to see Sylvester Stallone as an older Batman.
Now that would be a big departure from the current films. Interesting idea, or madness?
Christopher Nolan, DC and Warner Bros, are still to confirm plans for the next Batman film. This has led to all kinds of rumours, mostly involving casting. Cher, Angelina Jolie and Johnny Depp have all been mentioned.
Now Frank Miller, the writer of The Dark Knight Returns, has voiced who he'd like to play an older Batman in a film version of his comic book. It's Sylvester Stallone. Miller is quoted in The Los Angeles Times, through Cinema Blend.
'Just that mouth of his, the scowl and the way it would look in a mask...I loved Rocky Balboa. This wounded warrior, that's what Batman is in Dark Knight Returns.'
I haven't read the comic book, but it does sound like an entirely different Batman. I believe it has Batman as a retired alcoholic. I'm not suggesting it's where the franchise will go next. But it does beg the question, if they did make it into a film, would Stallone make a good Batman? If not who would?
Michael Caine has been talking so says Filmstalker:
Still no confirmation that Christopher Nolan will be back for Batman 3. But one of the stars, seems to have confirmed that two of the rumoured new villains might actually be happening.
Michael Caine has said that Johnny Depp and Philip Seymour Hoffman, are being considered for The Riddler and The Penguin.
It was early last month when rumours of Johnny Depp and Philip Seymour Hoffman first appeared. Given they were one of many casting rumours for Batman 3, it was hard to know how serious they were.
Michael Caine however, has said that the two are being considered for roles in the next Batman film. His source? Another one of those executives. Speaking to MTV through Cinematical, Caine had this to say.
'I was with [a Warner Bros.] executive and I said, Are we going to make another one? They said yeah. I said, How the hell are we going to top Heath? And he says Ill tell you how you top Heath Johnny Depp as The Riddler and Philip Seymour Hoffman as The Penguin. I said, St, theyve done it again! '
It could well be that said executive has been hearing the same rumours as us. Or it could be the closest we've come to some kind of official word. How much longer is Christopher Nolan on holiday for? I can't take much more of this...
I can't see Frnak Miller's version happening yet, it's too soon and the new updated series has really only just taken off the Dark KNight has opened up Pandora's box as far as sequels go. As much as I like the idea of JD and PSH as the Riddler and Penguin respecively, I'd like to see Nolan go abit more leftfield when he signs on like he no doubtedly will. It's like when Heath Ledger was cast as the Joker, there were some morepopular choices but then he went way out west and picked Ledger and look at what a performnce that gave us. No I think this rumour mongering of the highest order and we need to sit tight and wait and see.
We've been waiting for news on Christopher Nolan and Batman 3 since The Dark Knight was released. Now we have what I guess you'd call the nearest we've been to news that he is coming back.
Not only that but it looks like production will be starting sooner than we expected. Could there finally be movement?
Since The Dark Knight there have been rumours galore on who might be the next Batman villain. And all this despite there being no director attached, with Christopher Nolan taking a well earned holiday. Now it could be we have the first half way concrete confirmation that Nolan will be back for a third Batman.
Cinema Blend say that the latest edition of Production Weekly, has Christopher Nolan officially as director of Batman 3. Also back are Christian Bale, Morgan Freeman, Michael Caine, and Gary Oldman. They also say that pre-production will begin in February 2009. It is a low key announcement for such an eagerly awaited film.
Still it is the closest we've come to some confirmed news on Batman 3. Let's just hope it's announced officially soon. Do you want Nolan back for a third Batman, or should someone else take over?
Absolutely it should be Nolan. Who else could carry on the vision he has (Very sucessfully) brought to the big screen. Unless Tim Burton fancied another go...
Oh dear, looks like we've all been lead up the garden path about the next Batman film....
Batman: The Dark Knight, squashed everything before it this summer. And partly because the film was so good, rumours were already starting for Batman 3.
But one of the writers, David Goyer, says none of what we have heard since is true. Not only that, but he finds it all amusing.
Since The Dark Knight was released this summer, there has been a lot of talk on the next one. Some of them obvious rumours, and some of them that could be true. And just as well we have all been taking them with a pinch of salt, David Goyer says none of them are true. He was talking to MTV Splashpage, through Cinema Blend.
'Its all B.S. ALL of it. Chris and I havent even talked about it. He quite understandably is taking a long, long vacation and wants to purge himself.'
So no Cher as Catwoman, that was one of my favourites. No villains confirmed yet, and no Christopher Nolan yet either. Man he's spoiling our fun. He has spoken informally with Nolan though, and they are throwing around some ideas.
'We have mused here and there [but] I mean Chris is pretty much a one movie at a time kind of guy. I wish I could tell you more. There really isnt anything to tell. If and when [Chris is] ready to talk - well talk.'
So there we go. We have to wait for concrete news. We all knew the villain rumours were getting a bit much. Doesn't stop us thinking about what we'd like in the next film. Are there any rumours that you want to come true for Batman 3?
Or maybe they are doing the ususal deny everything despite it being rue because they don't want to officially announce it yet.
Someone I was talking to at the HSM PC yesterday seemed to think that one part that is true is the one about Chris Nolan and the fact he is signed on already. (They were a Warners PR bod who wanted to meet Zac E.....)
