Filmstalker says another video game is up for the live action treatment:

Unbelievably it looks like there might be a film based on the video game Duke Nukem, and it's coming from the producer of the upcoming Max Payne, so we could well imagine that the film is going to be pretty full on, if it happens.

For those of you who haven't played Duke Nukem, there's a lot of comedy in it and is led by a character who's just like an eighties action hero in the vein of Arnie, Stallone, Kurt Russell, Roddy Piper, etc.

The story of Duke Nukem is a simple one, aliens arrive on earth to enslave the population, particularly the women, and he's a wisecracking, gun toting, hard assed, muscle man who decides to stand up to the aliens and fight back, with a bunch of one liners on the way.

'I'm working diligently at making a Duke Nukem movie scenario that will live up to the character and its import in the videogame world...As is the case with all of my game adaptations, I'd rather not make the movie than make a poor adaptation...

...With the two new games coming out based on Duke Nukem, I'm working at establishing a Duke film scenario that will compel a studio to finance a feature version...Certainly, there's a large audience that knows and loves this character.'

That's what the producer Scott Faye had to say about the Duke Nukem adaptation through Kotaku and AITH. He also talked a little about the idea behind bringing videogames to film and vice versa, and it would seem that he has the right idea, especially from his closing comment.

'I've always viewed content in a way that suggested that creating a universe, or a storyverse, would be exceptionally helpful when it comes to cross-media development...There are some archetypal properties that have blazed the trail like Star Wars, which has had novels, comic books, games and films all taking place in the same universe with different characters and stories. That's our agenda to create IPs that can thrive as games and in other media, but not necessarily have to mimic each other in terms of what story you're telling. Frankly, if I'm going to play a videogame based on a feature film, the last thing I want to do is play through the film narrative. If it's an interesting universe, it's an interesting universe. Be a little bit more creative about it.'

Okay. That sounds good. The idea that if they are to develop a film from a videogame or vice versa that they don't just go for the cheap money making option and use the same story, they're going to be creative about it and give whichever audience something different.

A Duke Nukem film though? Is there really enough material there to make a decent film out of, or do they have to make up an entire story to fit with the Duke Nukem character, because really that's all there is for the story in the videogame.

I've not heard of this game so I can't comment but does it have potential or is this just further Hollywood desperation/capitalising on the retro trend?

Might have some potential,i loved Duke Nukem, fantastic game when i played it some years back. The Duke is a pretty funny character, has the attitude of Bruce Campbell's Ash from the evil dead films with the cocky one liners and attitude and resembles a blond in his prime arnold swarzenneger.A lof of the game was over the top, ridiculous enemies and women who he liked to pay to take their top off (in digital form it looked terrible). If they make it into a movie, could be really funny,or it could be pretty bad,as long as they dont tone him down, hes all about being a bad ass so a lot of violence and bad language with some great one liners is needed for this film.
