The news came out last night that Stephen Chow is going to direct The Green Hornet, as well as take the lead as Kato, the servant for the character of The Green Hornet, both in and out of costume.
Now although it's great news on a number of points, it does suggest that this is going to be more of a comedy than anything else, as both Chow and Seth Rogen, who takes the lead and co-wrote the script, are noted for their comedy.
The announcement came out last night and officially announced that Stephen Chow is to direct the film and play the part of Kato in The Green Hornet, a role once played in the U.S. television series by Bruce Lee. Through Variety he says:
The idea of stepping into Bruce Lee's shoes as Kato is both humbling and thrilling, and to get the chance to direct the project as my American movie debut is simply a dream come true...I'm grateful to my friends at Sony, who have shown so much faith in me for so many years.
This in itself is great news, Chow is a great director and a similarly strong actor, and I think he'll lend a lot to the character of Kato as well as keeping track with the most well known portrayal by the great Bruce Lee.
The warning signs came a long time ago though when Seth Rogen was announced to be taking the lead and co-writing the script, that was when we realised that it was going to be big on the comedy elements and move away from what the various series comic, radio and television series were.
Is this a good direction for you, the audience? Would you rather see this than a more serious version?
To be honest the Bruce Lee TV series was hokey as hell so if this film turns into a flat out comedy then it won't be *that* much of a deviation although I can see the concerns of what they do to this, mainly because of Seth Rogen, especially if he is going to play Britt Reid a role Rogen has no business playing unless it is all purely for laughs.
It's very much in the vain of the 60's Batman TV series but a lot darker and sometimes a lot sillier.
There are two DVDs available: The Green Hornet & Fury Of The Dragon but they are different TV episodes edited together into a 90 minute film with fight scenes from other episodes edited in to show Bruce Lee off to the masses.
Iv only saw a few episodes of the Green Hornet and Bruce was always the best part of the show as Kato.Stephen Chow will be pretty cool as Kato, but as good as he was, hell never really match up to the legend that is Bruce Lee but it should be fun to see him play the part.I wish Stephen well for working in the US which will be pretty hard for him but i can see him doing well.Great actor.
