Now I know some if not a lot of you on here are fans of this genre so I thought Id give you all a place to put your latest thoughts favs and the like.... BTW way CPC Movies has just appionted a new Anime columnist... SPIM!!! Read his forst column at www.cpcmovies.co.uk soon!
it's all about "Fist of the North Star" and "Urosukidoji and the Curse of the Demon Womb" both cracking anime North Star is better though because it's less purverted and more about fighting and bloodshed.
Just discovered on Rapture TV that they are running the Anime Excel Saga and have been since Jan 3rd. It airs twice weekly on Tuesday and Thursday at 8.30pm but there is a one hour (2 episode) omnibus edition on Sundays (tonight) at 8.00pm.
Not Sure if anyone has had the chance to watch it yet but Brave Story is a truly fascinating anime film about a boy who has trouble in his life with his dad leaving and his mom falling sick.He befriends another boy who has some kind of magical powers, and follows him through a dark portal to a whole new world with many strange characters and unique places. As the story goes on youll find why the other boy commits bad actions, and that he and the main character are both on the same quest for the same reason which is to get a wish to change what happened in their life. Wonderfully animated film, well told story and is quite sad at times, one of the best anime movies iv seen in a while in japan, so i higley recommend it to you guys! Here is a poster for the movie if you like to know ^^.
The May Column is now live on the site, head on over to HERE to read this month's column. Some discussion about the column would be nice. Please comment below.
These are a great read and normally my first stop when I goto CPC Movies. Are you going to do anything in the future on the Key Directors or where Anime First originated from?
Well, I will be looking at some of the directors in future columns. As for the origins I touched upon that in the debut column but maybe I will expand upon that one day.
I found it really confusing but there were two reasons for that.
The first reason was because the film was both subtitled and dubbed. But the sub titles and the dubbing did not match very well. I think the sub titles were a translation of the japanese dialogue where the dubbing it was adjusted to suit the english language more.
For example on scene where she was being helped to find the 'mimi's room' website on her computer, her friend was helping her and she said something like. "explain it in english" but the subtitles said 'explain it in japanese'. But there were times when what was said was totally different that what was written, more so during the singing parts.
The other reason I was confused was because the film does get really hard to follow whats going on. It's done really well because watching it you can feel the main characters confusion when as MIB put it in his article 'Mimi no longer knows where the lines between reality and her TV life are'
In all I really enjoyed the film and would recommend it to watch.
I'm a little confused - did you watch it in the Japanese language with English subs or English language with English subs?
As you noticed, the problem with the dubbed version is that they do alter the dialogue to match the lip synching, whilst the the subtitles are an accurate-as-possible translation of the original Japanese script, since they use words different to us. Like the Germans they use verbs and nouns in different places of the sentance. Plus the Japanese sometimes have one word that equates to two or three English words or phrases and vice versa.
Anyway, it is a great film and Satoshi Kon is a master at flipping reality on its head for the viewer. Some of his other works follow a simliar pattern.
Sorry for the confusion, kinda suitable seeing as the cufusion I had watching the film.
It was english subtitled and english dubbed. The subtitles were direct translation of japanese where the dubbing was also altered so the two things, both in english didn't match very well.
Because of the Rain I watched Ghost in the Shell today. I have to say I can see what you wrote in your article about it being an influence for the Matrix.
Again I found this movie, just like Perfect Blue a bit confusing. But this time I had no problem with subtitles as it was only dubbed into english.
But unlike Perfect Blue when the end of the moive gave all the answers, this movie finished leaving so many unanswered questions. Does the series carry on from where the film left off? Does it explore the development of what happened to the main character Motoko Kusanagi?
I think your article MIB sums up this film very well without giving too much of the film away.
Your disc only had the dubbed version? How come? Every version I know on the market is both subbed and dubbed.
The Stand Alone Complex series is as the title suggests - independent of the film but the seeing the first film helps for understanding the characters and the basic concept of the story.
The second film is set much later on and focuses on Batou.
Great article as, always wondered what Cowboy BeBop was about after seeing lots of pictures and desktop wallpaper based on it and now I know. Maybe another I will add to my list.
Nice comments about EVA without giving your own opinion on whether it's any good or not. Just one point, aren't they Angels and not Angles?
SHE also sounds very instresting, might also go on my list based on your description. Can't comment on your your synopsis of Gunslinger Girl as I haven't managed to get round to watching it yet.
Nice column again MiB, a tricky subject Dubbed or Subbed that we have discussed before. I have to say I am watching the programs on Anime Channel Dubbed because thats the only choice you get, but my dvd's I watch in Japanese with Subtitles as I do prefer to hear the original japanese voices. Sometimes the dubbed ones are so different and do change the characters quite a lot.
Again great column and a very interesting subject.
How strange that your article this month would be about fan service because I was actually going to talk about fan service in Eva.
I was watching this weeks show and it had much more fan service than any previous episodes and at the end they even said the next episode will ofr course have even more fan service!
It wasn't until then I realise what fan service was actually referring to, I know I had watched Love Hina and knew all about it but didn't realise it was called fan service.
Obviously I liked love hina and I think the fan service in Eva has made it more fun and more apealing to me, so as you can no doubt guess I clearly land on the 'its harmless fun' side of this topic.
Very interesting article, I had heard of both Bleach and Death Note but didn't know what either was about. Now I do I am very interested in seeing both.
I will try to catch Bleach on the anime channel. On that I have read on another forum that the sky channel number for the new anime channel isn't known yet and they posted 'DO NOT KNOW UNTILL NEXT WEEK at the earliest.' yesterday.
The other option is I can add it to my christmas list, but I can't do that for Death Note as it's not out till next year, maybe it will go on my birthday list?
I haven't read it all properly yet. I'll be back on this later. The thing is MiB your consistent. I'd like to see you do something either challenging or potentially incendary to cause comments...
As usual a very informatitive article, but I am losing my will a bit with these Mecha shows. As you know I am losing interest in EVA, I thought Vision of Escaflowne wasn't very good at all. The only Mecha one that even interests me at all is Jiniki Extend and even that I was starting to not bother until I realised it was two story arcs.
You might want to try GunXSword as that is Mecha show but with a lot of other stuff going on too. And episode 17 is mostly fan service which I know you like. Read my review of volume 5 on the main site.
