Latest news from Sony Pictures
Matthew Fox is rumored to be in it too... Thoughts? I suppose most of you aren't old enough to remeber the Rambo films at the Cinema...
Iv seen the first Rambo films on Dvd myself and i like them actually, Rambo one and two espicially are great fun, if the new Rambo is anything like the New Rocky Balboa film then it should be quite good (i really enjoyed the new Rocky movie). At the same time, i wish hollywood would actually start producing good, original movies instead of remakes, sequals or horror films which feature basically the same things as other horror movies do.
The Rambo films are classics!! First Blood Stars Brian Dennehy as the villan for goodness sake. It even features such classic quotes as:
Teasle: Are you telling me that 200 of our men against your boy is a no-win situation for us? Trautman: You send that many, don't forget one thing. Teasle: What? Trautman: A good supply of body bags. And:
Rambo:I could have killed 'em all, I could kill you. In town you're the law, out here it's me. Don't push it. Don't push it or I'll give you a war you won't believe. And of course:
Teasle: Whatever possessed God in heaven to make a man like Rambo? Trautman: God didn't make Rambo. I made him! And finally the classic:
Trautman: I don't think you understand. I didn't come to rescue Rambo from you. I came here to rescue you from him. Teasle: Well, we all appreciate your concern Colonel, I will try to be extra careful! Trautman: You picked the wrong man to push. Teasle: No, Trautman, HE picked the wrong man. Trautman: That boy's a heart attack! He may be the best the Special Forces ever produced. Whatever you're planning to throw at him here, he's been through a whole lot worse, in lot worse places than this. I'm just amazed he allowed any of your posse to live. Teasle: Is that right? Trautman: Strictly speaking, he slipped up. You're lucky to be breathing. Teasle: That's just great. Colonel, you came out here to find out why one of your machines blew a gasket! Trautman: You don't seem to want to accept the fact you're dealing with an expert in guerrilla warfare, with a man who's the best, with guns, with knives, with his bare hands. A man who's been trained to ignore pain, ignore weather, to live off the land, to eat things that would make a billy goat puke. In Vietnam his job was to dispose of enemy personnel. To kill! Period! Win by attrition. Well Rambo was the best.
First Blood was famous for supposedly inspiring Hungerford killer Micheal Ryan, all because he carried a Bowie Knife (One like Rambo uses). It created a bigstink at the time and several scenes were cut and the film was not allowed to air for years on TV.
Then came Rambo: First Blood Part II. Released in the same year as Rocky IV and I remeber getting some cut out and collect Work out like Rambo features in the Sun during that summer. Personally I thought this was the weakest of the three although it does feature 80's bad guy Martin Kove (See Karate Kid). This was in the midst of the Regan Administration and Rambo pretty much became the poster boy for that generation. (Although Schwarzeneggers Commando also released that summer was infinitly better)
Finally Rambo III. The one where Rambo single handedly kicks the invading Russians out of Aghanistan. (You really couldn't make it up) Again fell fowl of the censors for being too brutal with that Bowie knife. I loved this one for the sheer scale of ridiculousness of it. Basically Rambo does off to rescue Conel trautman who has been captured after Rambo who is living with Buddhists refuses one more mission. He then goes into Afghanistan to rescue trautman and destroys the entire Russian Army with a Knife and a Bow with exploding arrows.
I saw Rambo III at the cinema and the only thing I remember from it was the bit at the end when he drove a tank into the helicopter and survived the crash. As I recall, the whole cinema groaned at that bit.
I personally though the bit where he climbed up the side of the rock face Which seemed to be a mountain was pretty cool. You never see how he got to the base of the cliff face or how indeed he carried all that equipment up there...
Initial reports from screenings have been very positive. Stallone is on the PR tour big time and it's out in the US today. Here's a quick pic of Stallone at the launch party...
LONDON Odeon, the U.K.s biggest exhib chain, will not show Sonys new release Rambo at its theaters this weekend, citing undisclosed commercial reasons. News has sent shockwaves around the local industry as Rambo is the frames most significant new release in the U.K. News has also enraged online Sylvester Stallone fans, especially those who live in rural areas where their only local cinema is an Odeon.
Decision by Odeon not to play the testosterone-fuelled pic will likely see its opening U.K. B.O. haul dented considerably even though Sony has spent much of this week scrambling to get other chains, including other market leaders Vue and Cineworld, to pump up their Rambo showings.
Odeon is tight-lipped on the decision not to play the franchise sequel. Owing to commercial reasons, Odeon has made the decision not to screen the film Rambo across its cinemas in the U.K., said a statement. As the U.K.s largest cinema chain, Odeon offers its guests a wide range of film genres to appeal to many different audiences. As such the decision not to screen Rambo will free up screens to show alternative popular new films such as Jumper, Be Kind Rewind and Juno.
An exhib source told Variety that Odeons decision to pull Rambo must be over a disagreement over the terms. But to us, the film rentals rate seems reasonable enough for a release such as Rambo.
There has to be a time when neither player steps down. Both companies have their budgets and both are playing the game, commented Andrew Turner, Cineworld director of film booking, adding that I cant remember the last time this happened in the multiplex era.
Bookers had predicted that Rambo would open to just over $3.5 million but projections have been scaled back to closer to $3 million. That said, pic is still likely to claim top spot in the charts. Some positive reviews and Stallones solid promotional work in Blighty should help drive opening weekend biz.
Peter Taylor, m.d., Sony Pictures Releasing U.K., declined to comment on the situation.
Sci-fi actioner Jumper, last weekends B.O. champ in its opening sesh, is expected to be the biggest beneficiary of the Odeon decision not to screen Rambo.
Also going out wide this weekend is Michel Gondrys Be Kind, Rewind, which Pathe plays on an ambitious 367. But previews of $413,244 at 300 on Wednesday and Thursday have left bizzers underwhelmed about leftfield pics commercial prospects. Other releases such as My Blueberry Nights and The Edge of Heaven cater mainly for arthouse auds.
From Variety.
personally how does this arguement hold water. If it's because it would make money then why do they show all those other crap movies? I hear on the grapevine that it has to down with Digital downloading. Aparantly Odeon are about to make films available to download once you've been to see them at an Odeon. Stallone wanted no part of it hence the ban.
