I got My Wife Is A Gangster yesterday with the My Wife... 2 coming from E-bay soon (well as soon as my hacked account is unlocked again...)
Anyway, a couple of TV heads up for you.
Film 4 is showing HK film Dumplings on Easter Monday at 22.50pm (means it clashes with Japanorama - dammit!) and Jon Woo's Once A Thief (starring Chow Yun Fat) is on ITV 4 rather annoying also on Easter Monday at 00.30pm, just as Dumplings ends...
Just bought my wife is a gangster myself today to MIB, cant wait to watch it. Ah Dumplings, very strange movie that, watched it once a few months ago, good film, but weird, the leading actress (i forget her name but shes lovely!) plays a woman who seemingly is obsessed with looking young, so she goes to a woman who has some kind of talent with making dumpings which help to make her and others youthful in looks (im not a good writer so please forgive the poor description of this film ^^). Was shocked with what she made dumplings from later in the film, but wont spoil it, needless to say it kind of made me angry, since i felt so sad for the girl. Great, but strange film.
Sounds great, but i am saving for my trip there (bought a ticket already but need to save spending money which i need a whole load of, so i cant spend to much now) so sadly i will have to give it a miss myself. Still itll be a great event for people intrested in japanese culture and things.
the tickets are £10, also benoit are you going to japan on your trip, i am going there in nov, on my own mind you but hope to meet people outthere, i am having japanese lessons at the end of the month, so in time i can order dvd stright from japan and not have to worry about subtitles.
also do you know that My Wife Is A Gangster 3 is out soon.
also I am recording japanarma so when i have all 6 eps I can send them to you lot, i have the last series on dvd as well somewhere.

10 pounds is quite cheap, but i have to really save as much as i can, plus the cost from my town to london is a good 25 pounds on top so i think i better just miss it this time. Besides nothing can beat being in japan so i dont mind missing that :).My trip to Japan is September to December so ill be staying a few months myself, i usually stay 3 months each year so its became somewhat of a tradition for me, good luck with those japanese lessons to, i know quite a little, so having a bit of experiance, i have many Japanese only dvds such as the live action prince of tennis movie, love last song on this little planet live action,Hinnochio, Nana, Cutie honey, Zebraman, Devilman ect ect, theres many quality movies which unfortunatly only are in japanese, but some titles have english subs though its mainly the anime kinds and rare on live action movies.

Not wishing to put you off but to become fluent enough in Japanese to follow the dialogue in a film will probably take quite some time - especially the speed the natives speak at. Unless you are a very quick learner and can devote the maximum amount of study time to it, I don't think a year or so is too unreasonable a target. Even my cousin who lived and worked out there for a couple of years never became fluent enough.
Anyway, back on topic, whilst I still have the first two My Wife Is A Gangster films to watch, I just hope that My Wife..3 doesn't mean this will become a franchise that is run into the ground for the sake of it. Nothing spells disaster than a great idea being diluted because greedy producers think it has mileage after the first film was a great success.
i know i would never be that that good in japanese, as long as I know how to ask a girl out then i am sorted. as for wife 3 not be honest i thought the 2nd one was too much, we will let time tell on that.

Just been reading about My Wife...3. It came out last December in Korea and stars my future ex-wife Shu Qi in the lead role!
What I don't get is how they can tie this in with the original premise of the first film when neither the original wife or husband (who I understand isn't even in the second film) are present! Despite the positive reviews I have read about it, this does sound like they are capitalising on the original films success by milking the title without having any direct connection to it, which is quite sad.
A TV heads up for you guys. On SKY Indie (SKY 310) there is a 50 minute documentary called China's Hollywood tomorrow at 6.00pm and 2.35am and on Friday (6.00pm and 2.50am). It's a look at the recent rise in success of Chinese and Hong Kong movies over the past few years from Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon onwards.
House Of Flying Daggers is also showing on SKY Indie this week on Monday (4.00pm and 10.25pm) and Thursday (2.00pm and 10.45pm), while on Friday there is a comedy drama from Singapore called Rice Rhapsody at 12.00 noon and 7.00pm.
Finally on Film 4 on Friday at 23.35pm is Stephen Chow's excellent comedy Kung Fu Hustle. All films and the documentary are subbed.
thanks for the heads up MIB. Love the house of flying daggers, one of the most visually beautiful movies iv ever seen with the lovely Zhang Ziyi ^^, Kung Fu Hustle is Hilarious, so i really should get to see that again.
Tomorrow night on Film 4 is the Korean film Untold Scandal a sumptuous period drama which is a reworking of Dangerous Liasions. This airs at 12.45 am and comes highly recommended from yours truly!
And on Bank Holiday Monday John Woo's Bullet In The Head airs on ITV 4 at 1.10am. Tony Leung and Jackie Cheung star.
Finally the documentary China's Hollywood is repeated throughout the week on the Sky Indie movie channel.
Some interesting DVD lists there. Personally I am more inclined towards old-school Kung-Fu though perhaps 'used to be' would be more accurate.
In the last few days I watched 'Ring' with a youngish Chigusa Nagayo starring in the title role as a wannabe pro wrestler who works in what looks like some kind of steel/metal works. The opening sequence is great and features some nice shots of Chigusa working in the hellish looking environment of the factory. If you pay attention you notice that when she leaves work (cycling on her bike) that the big silver bus that passes is actually the All Japan Women's tourbus. Quite a nice touch. Later on through the film various wrestlers appear (from 1993) for only brief seconds mostly.
On a curious note I think that the only wrestler that is played by an actress is the Devil Masami character. She was never that good looking! Perhaps they thought she was too much of a faceache.
Altogether a pretty weird film where the men seem to constantly try and rape the Chigusa Nagayo character or put down women in some kind of way. This is all far to over the top and rather spoils the film. It might make more sense if I could speak Japanese
If you want to see the beggining of the film check it out at:
Thanks for the link. Seeing Chigusa smile was an odd sight!
I didn't get the bit in the hospital or wherever it was when those guys where beating up Chigusa and the man in the wheelchair and not one of the dozen or so people there tried to help. Even the porter guy just stood there like a lemon as Chigusa had the crap knocked out of her.
And I see what you mean about the actress playing Devil Masami - she was SO much more glamorous.
I have to confess I'd not heard of this film. I guess it got lost in the history books due to later success of the J-Horror classic Ringu.
Iv heard about that film Shonshu but never had the chance to see it myself, but Chigusa in a love scene? Id never thought id ever hear that! There is many joshi wrestling kind of films out there, i have one called Wildflowers which i havent yet seen, but it looks like a good film.
Tonight at 1.40 am BBC2 (you read that right) are showing a Chinese film called Foreign Moon. It's about a Chinese flautist who comes to London to study msuic but has to start up a business to pay her fees.
And over on film 4 starting Sunday through to Tuesday, the excellent Infernal Affairs trilogy gets another outing.
I loved the Eye, a fantstic film. Im trying to look for some more asian cinema so im scouring ebay and stuff, i have mostly everything from the tartan collection so im hoping i can discover some new or old films. There was a 1960s japanese film i remember seeing on ebay called the Mysterians i think, it looked like a space movie, there was also an ultra rare live action Astro boy film from the late 60s to but its gone now, dammit! Any suggestions Mib? I dont have as many Hong Kong movies as i like so im looking out for a few of them.
Amazingly, there haven't been many Hong Kong horror films and The Eye was something of a breakthrough. Whilst not a complete "Horror" Dumplings was a big success too.
As for old stuff, Mysterians sounds familiar. I don't know if you've seen the Lady Snowblood films or the Zatoichi films but they are classics. Also, films like Tokyo Drifter and the Seijun Suzuki films of the 60's which are Yakuza classics. I don't know if they will be to your taste as Suzuki was often fired by film studios for making films that were too obscure.
Thanks MIB, iv not seen Tokyo drifter but iv heard about that movie so i think ill read more into that.Bought that on ebay MIB, along with the Curse of the Golden Flower, My wife is a gangster 2 and Thai superhero movie Mercury man which looks a heck of a lot of fun, so looking foward to getting them!
Heads up - Jet Li's Wu Shu martial arts swansong Fearless debuts on SKY Premier tomorrow night at 23.30pm and will run for the whole week in that slot. Highest recommendations to see this film.
Also, Bravo 2 have been showing Hong Kong action and martial arts films during the week at 21.00pm. Tonight it is New Dragon Gate Inn (with Tony Leung and Maggie Cheung). Next week they'll be showing
Monday: Tiger On The Beat (with Chow Yun Fat) Tuesday: Full Contact (with Chow Yun Fat) Wednesday: Island of Fire (with Jackie Chan, Sammo Hung & Andy Lau) Thursday: Bichunmoo (excellent Korean martial arts film)
Sounds great Mib.Have been looking and discussing films at other sites and heard a few rumours of live action movies of Naruto, Bleach (probably not true) and a few other films, would actually like to see some of them actually, Last Love song on this little planet was fantastic as was Prince of tennis (though it seemed to lack much of a story), so i enjoy the manga/anime to live action films and would love to see more in the future!
I have both on DVD anyway and won't be staying up late to watch them, but thanks for the info, might watch the start just to answer my own questions above.
Cant beat battle royal, fantastic film, there is several different box sets here in japan, i already have 7 dvd sets of them, the original tartan releases of one and two, the 2 tin sets, the bullet ridden box japanese set of the original film and 2 other bonus feature packed sets with a couple of tshirts and things with them. I love battle royale and really need to watch them again.
Battle Royale is of course legendary.Iv picked up quite a few asian films here in japan,a newly released Geisha film which looks like a comedy, a film called TRICK, Dororo, a few animes and a few sci fi fantasy films which look awesome. I love japanese cinema so cant wait to watch them finally!
Do you have a big collection of Asian movies yourself Mib? ^^ I always wondered that, you know your stuff about asian cinema which is great.Iv got a pretty big collection myself, most of the films i have are from japan mind, a lot of rare ones which no doubt wont be released here. Some films i would have expected to have been released world wide, such as Zebraman,i dont know if you have seen it Mib but its a pretty big film, starring one of japanese best actors in my opinion Sho Aikawa and directed by the legendary Takashi Miike.I am surprised that not many people have seen this film to be honest. Its far superior to nearly every hollywood superhero flick out there even now its 2 years old. Im a big fan of it and really urge just about everyone to watch it ^^.
My Asian DVD collection is not as big as I'd like it to be. If I had the room and the money then trust me it would be much larger than it is right now! At the moment it stands at 203 DVDs - that's including Anime. 158 excluding Anime.
I think we are just about even when it comes to how many asian films Mib,i have a similar amount, mostly mine are Japanese and Korean movies, i have a lack of Hong Kong cinema in my collection so i really need to rectify that! Theres so many good films out there, its impossible to afford them all so i know how you feel ^^.
A slight diversion here as I plug a book and not a film:
East Asian Cinema by David Carter.
According to the review in NEO, this 254 page guide to Asian cinema is also comes with a bonus DVD documentary on Korean cinema. Sounds like an essential buy to me.
The cheapest I have found it is on Amazon HERE for just £6.49.
Iv been on a spending spree with asian film recently Mib ^-^ (since i just realised my fornightly income supprt thing has gone up by quite a bit!) and yester along with elfed Lied, i bought a couple of more films. Typhoon is one i have to watch so i might go and see that tonight, also Tetsuo Body Hammer which i hope will be good fun, because the original was fantastic apart from that lazy ending of it.Im going to look online for the Seyuki film on dvd which i think may be out in a couple of weeks (or as many of us know here the west, Monkey!)
Im sure youll get them Mib ^-^.Amazon is amazing for asian films,i had a look on there recently and theres several new Asian films on Tartan asia in the US which we havent got here yet.I bought a couple of ebay because i dont have a credit card of my own (which at this rate of my spending is probably a good thing i dont..).One movie Bloody Reunion is one i bought and its a korean film which is supposed to be quite brutal and Gory, and another is called Silk, which from the box looks to be a korean version of Cube.
