Been quite a few of them Dark M. I liked Im a Cyborg but thats Ok which was a very touching and good film but for me Saiyuuki beats them all. It wont win an academy awards or such but its a really great, funny, enjoyable film that finishes off the tv show of the same Name and has great performances by the actress behind Tripitaka and the always fabulous Shingo Katori.Great film and cant wait to get it on DVD when its released online!
Exiled Election 2 Curse Of The Golden Flower The Bow
Haven't got round to watching Typhoon and Welcome To Dongmakgol yet nor have I seen City Of Violence. Duelist was a disappointment though.
Plus you have to give a nod to The Host and New Police Story as they hit big on DVD this year. Sadly, DVD is mostly the way to go because this country is racist and ignorant towards foreign language cinema.
Iv seen both Typhoon and City of Violence and both are good films.Typhoon dragged in parts but slowly the story got more intresting with an exciting ending, City of violence...its fun, its crazy, and nice to see my faverate Korean star get a leading role but most of the fight scenes in the film are hardly original but some very fun fighting sequances all the same. The Host is awesome as is new police story :).Unfortunatly i havent watched any new asian movies recently due to my recent adictivness to Asian tv drams.
Im surprised its even being released here actually, but its a great movie, might have to watch it again soon, cant get enough of lovely Yukie nakama at the momet ;).
Ah thanks for the heads up. R-Point is a fasinating horror! Brother is actually one of my favourite Kitano/Yakuza films, no matter what anyone says about it I still love it. Haven't saw Warrior King since it first came out over here, might give that another peek.
Anyone heard anything about the Huo Yuan Jia Series from 2007?
I came across it there by accident and it stars Ekin Cheng and Jordan Chan who anyone who has seen Young and Dangerous will know these 2 are fantastic together.
Yup sure is. Ekin Cheng looks a little more like him I believe. But obviously Jet Li is a better Martial Artist. What I don't get is how did he get a mad haircut like that back then?
I have to buy that set Jack but im not a fan of Ekin Cheung, hes a pretty average martial artist and actor.I often do my shopping on sensasian dvd, a lot of the dvds are really cheap for tv series, i got so many from there, Gokusen, Gokusen II, Hana Kimi, Bewitched in Tokyo..all for about 12 pounds a set which are usually complete series! Great stuff! Im waiting for the third Gokusen which Yukie Nakama is currently making i heard..Shes soooo kawaii..
"Kung Fu Dunk," the high school-set martial arts action movie is set to be the biggest budget pic to emerge from Taiwan in recent years. The English-language title has apparently been changed recently from "Slam Dunk" to avoid confusion with a comic book franchise, of the same name. The cast is headlined by pop superstar Jay Chou, who made his first big screen appearance in "Curse of the Golden Flower.
The martial arts drama is about a young man who grew up in a kung fu school and was recruited by the university basketball team because of his excellent slam dunk skills. Follow him as he juggles his time between training for gruesome matches, fighting a fellow team member for the heart of the girl of his dream and trying to locate his family.
As well as Jay Chou, the movie will also reunites "Golden Flower" action director Ching Siu-tung and cinematographer Zhao Xiaoding. Working with a $10 million budget, the flick is directed by veteral helmer Kevin Chu Yin-ping. It also stars Charlene Choi, Taiwanese model Chen Bo-ling and Hong Kong's Eric Tsang. The Film is due for release around Chinese New Year, in Feb 2008.
Looks and sounds an intresting film! Iv read its been inspired by the slam dunk manga and anime series but not a direct take of it. Stars JaY chou and the gorgeous Charlene Choi. Im looking forward to this movie :).
Im looking forwad to this movie but iv only heard about it a little while back :).Should be quite an enjoyable film, probably like Shaolin soccer.Jay Chou i havent seen enough of so i hope to get to see this in the near future :).Zatoichi is a brilliant movie but iv watched the Kitano version several times now, really enjoyable flick :).
me to! It looks so cool but i actually dont see enough of Jay chou. My asian cinema and tv collection is mainly Japanese and Korean Cinema so im trying to start watching some chinese and Hong Kong stuff. Of course i have all Bruce Lees and a ton of Jet li, Jackie chan stuff but not as much other movies as i would like.
Stephen Chow's new film CJ7 gets a UK cinema release on March 21st (although no doubt it will not be in my local fleapit). it's about a poor man and his son (played by a girl!) who befriend a shape-shifting alien that lands on earth.
Kung Fu Dunk opens in Asia this Thursday so I reckon it will be a DVD only release over here.
Japanese historical fantasy Mushi-shi (based on the Anime and Manga) starring Shinobi's Joe Odagiri is released on Feb 25th (my review of the Anime is up now). Shinobi comes out on DVD on the 11th (my review should be posted soon).
Finally Park Chan Wook's I'm A Cyborg but That's Okay is released on DVD on April 4th
I enjoyed Im a Cyborg....very very good film. Shinobi is a good fun film though a tad short, and iv actually seen Mushi sh in japan on dvd but i failed to get it but it looks something i might have to pick up.Im looking forward to a lot of this years Asian film releases.Hopefully when i go over in April, i can pick up a few new Japanese releases and some obscure titles i enjoy a lot of :).CJ7 sounds right up my street though ;). Great stuff.
John Woo's The Killer with Chow Yun Fat (subbed!!) is on Saturday on Ch 5 directly following Jet Li's Kiss of The Dragon.
Sunday night on Film 4 is Battle Royale and on Monday night on Film 4 is Battle Royale II - Requiem. If you've not seen the first BR film then I suggest you do so otherwise you officially fail at life.
i have several versions of the battle royals ;) the 2 uk release tin sets, a couple of bullet ridden boxed japanese editions, a 3 disc BR2 collection ect..I love the movies, everyone has to watch them!
Seen that a while back. Cant remember the full plot but isnt it about a detective who discovers bodly parts in bin bags around the city he lives? I remember it had some twist to it.
Its a decent movie but not one i would watch time and time again really.Soon im watching Into the Mirror which is a korean drama/muder kind of movie, not techinally horror i guess but its a decent movie from what i remember so will be giving it a watch.
Nice Review Mib, great stuff ;) spot on as usual.Shinobi is one of my faverate movies so its pretty cool its finally being released over here.Yukie nakama is amazing in the movie, the first film i saw her in and iv been a big fan of hers ever since.
a couple of asian movies im looking forward to in 2008 ^_^..
Rika From the mind of director Kenichi Fujiwara comes 'Ultimate weapon high school girl: Rika.' A truly nuts looking Zombie horror flick about a sword wielding, undead killing, high school girl 'Rika.'
Three Kingdoms Three Kingdoms: Resurrection of the Dragon is an upcoming film based on the novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms by Luo Guanzhong. It will be directed by Daniel Lee with a reported budget of US$25 million.
Andy Lau stars as Zhao Yun, a top general of the kingdom of Shu who takes a last stand against the invading forces from the kingdom of Wei. Maggie Q is Cao Ying, a granddaughter of warlord Cao Cao, whoses eldest son Cao Pi becomes the first emperor of the Wei kingdom.
Chocolate is a 2008 Thai martial arts film directed by Prachya Pinkaew with martial arts choreography by Panna Rittikrai, the same pair who directed Tony Jaa in Ong-Bak and Tom Yum Goong. The star of Chocolate is Yanin "Jeeja" Vismistananda, who makes her debut film performance. Hiroshi Abe and Pongpat Wachirabunjong also star.
A young autistic woman named Zen (Yanin Vismistananda) has developed uncanny martial arts skills by watching television, and from living next door to a Muay Thai academy.
The girl is the daughter of Zin (Ammara Siripong), the Thai wife of Yakuza boss Masashi (Hiroshi Abe).
Zin was previously the girlfriend of Thai gangster No. 8 (Pongpat Wachirabunjong), who was jealous of her relationship with rival gangster Masashi, so he cut off one of Zin's toes, and forbade her from seeing Masashi.
L changed the world Only got info about this from my friend but a spin off from the other death note films and from what i gather is a story about his last 23 days of his life, will have to find out more about it but im excited about this!
Sure does, gonna try watch a lot of cinema when im over there next month and pick up a load of asian cinema dvds which i always find cheaply in some stores! Im really looking forward mostly to the L movie spin off,im a big fan of the live action movies so cant wait. Some things my friends said about it was its more light hearted then the other films which is cool.
Yeah i'll be checking out the L movie aswell. Am a big fan of Death Note although I thought the Anime was better than the live action. I still enjoyed the Live Action films though and the guy who played L was great so i'll be checking that one out.
Argh, I still haven't been to Japan or Hong Kong, although they are 2 places am dying to go to.
The anime is a fantastic work and im well into the mangas, the live actions were excellent as well i thought. The guy who played L is Ken'ichi Matsuyama, hes been in some things, including Gokusen to my surprise and other stuff.Great actor :). Will be watching it for sure. And you have to go to japan Jack, the best place in the whoooole world! ^_^ been there 3 times, and soon a fourth!
Yeah I recognised him from Nana aswell, he is the guitarist or bassist I believe.
Hmmm jealous! Me and my mate were going to go to Tokyo or Hong Kong this year but during a drunk night at the pub we all made a pack to go to Wrestlemania this year haha, flying out in just under 2 weeks. Spending 13 nights in Orlando, should be fun.
Who knows, we might be able to afford another holiday come August.
Lucky guy, would love to go to a mania, but i just dont fancy the US at all! But yep hes a pretty cool actor,my younger sister has a huge crush on him so she wants to meet him when shes over there in 2 years,as for myself, im going to,somehow, find a way of meeting Yukie Nakama and Anne Suzuki who are 2 of my fave actress's in the world, and no doubt stunningly beautiful in person.
Saw The Curse of the Golden Flower for the first time on SKy this week...just amaizng...I loved Hero and House of the Flying Daggers, and had heard that this was a dissapointing effort, but it was just stunning. Visually its incredible, even more colour drenched than the previous films, and its story is full of darkness and menace too.
Oh and I also picked up the 2 disc special edition of Battle Royale...Ive had the single disc one a while, but thought it was worth a tenner to see more of this amazing film and more of the lovely lady now gracing my sig and avatar!
