For those who like good anime then check out Death Note, this is one of the best i have ever seen ( and i have seen a few )
Death Note started its life as a 12 part manga which then became a 37 part anime series shown in Japan ( mind you they are only on part 21 at the moment ) and just late last year it was made into a full live film, which you can get from www.cdwow.com
there is a brief outline from another site:
Light Yagami is a brilliant, but bored, high school student who resents the crime and corruption in the world. His life undergoes a drastic change when he discovers a mysterious notebook, known as the "Death Note", lying on the ground in the year 2003. The Death Note's instructions claim that, if a human's name is written within it, that person shall die. Light is initially skeptical of the Death Note's authenticity, believing it is just a prank. However, after experimenting with it and killing two criminals, Light is forced to admit that the Death Note is real. After meeting with the true owner of the Death Note, a Shinigami named Ryuk, Light seeks to become "the God of the new world" by passing his judgment on criminals.
Soon, the number of inexplicable deaths of reported criminals catches the attention of the International Police Organization and a mysterious detective known only as "L". L quickly learns that the serial killer, dubbed by the public as "Kira" (derived from the Japanese pronunciation of the English word "Killer"), is located in Japan. L also concludes that Kira can kill people without laying a finger on them. Light realizes that L will be his greatest nemesis, and a race to prove mental superiority between the two begins.
so check it out if you can , I do have the anime series and the film and the manga.

Hold on... what am i doing there...that was not in the film
An incredibly intelligent, thought provoking and well written original story. I think it has translated wel on an internationl basis as it eschews the usual Manga story ideas of harems. meccha, magical powers and fan service.
I'm almost done with volume 9 of the Manga and have been watching the Anime to which is just excellent. The first film I was very disappointed with as they messed around with the story too much and the changes weren't for the better.
Light didn't need a girlfriend and the way Naomi suddenly changed character was ridiculous and not in keeping with her Manga character. That whole scenario took up way too much time for a story that was already rushed. they could have done so much more with it. I'm dreading the second film now...
As I said, the Anime has been a joy to watch. I love the little touches such as the shade of red they use on Light when he has evil thoughts and the contrasting blue for the "good guy" L. The incidental music is powerful and well suited to the vibe and tone of the story unlike the use of the Red Hot Chili Peppers in the first film.
Like stefd, I can heartily recommend Death Note to any Manga and Anime fan although I'm sure you've already discovered it.
Terrific manga, i have the first 6 and 9 and 10, and i love the L detective character, fun the way he eats as he is plotting the way to capture Kira. The 2 battling each other and trying to out think one another is great reading. Will read 9 and 10 when i can, and just bought the 3 disc edition of Death note and Death Note the last name off ebay, for the cheap price of 20 pound WITH english subs so i cant wait!
I have to be honest, I can't see how they can only run to 37 epiodes of the Anime and tell the complete story.
The Manga runs to 108 chapters and each Anime episode is roughly 2 chapters of the Manga; therefore the least we should expect is 54 episodes correct? Unless there are going to end the Anime at an earlier point than the Manga I can't see how they will be able to fit the whole into so few episodes.
The only other option is for the 37 episodes to be the first part of the story and then either leave it as a cliff hanger and return with the remaining 19 episodes or finsih the story off in an OVA.
Just done watching episode 25 and for those who haven't seen it, the first 13 minutes are a recap of everything that has happened right up to the end of episode 24 (to keep it spoiler free just in case) before moving on in the second half of the episode.
I still can't see this ending in just 12 more episodes.
With just two episodes to go, Kuro-Hana subs have received a "cease and desist" letter from VIZ Media warning them to stop subbing and releasing Death Note by Friday 22nd June. A scan of the letter can be found HERE
According to the site, they have decided to acquiesce and will stop at the requested time. That means they could put out episode 36 but that leaves everyone high and dry for the last episode.
The KH site has over 350 comments on this subject and as you can imagine, they're are not supportive of VIZ...
Iv not been reading death note or watching the anime (bought a copy of the first episodes from ebay some weeks back) recently, but i really want to get back to it, after watching the 2 films, i didnt really feel the need to continue reading the mangas for some reason, maybe i lost intrest in Death Note for a while im not sure, but i want to get more of the animes so will be searching for them on Ebay :).
Well, the Japanese DVD releases only have 3 or 4 episodes per disc so with 37 in total you're looking at 12 volumes at the least. You really should get into the Manga/Anime a the story runs a lot deeper than the films and the psychology between Light and L is dramtised a lot better through their thoughts before making each move.
I know that the fan subs are "illegal" but I don't see how VIZ can claim a copyright breach when their product isn't even on the market yet. And so what if their licence does cover the US - that mean nothing to the rest of the world. Notice how they waited until the end of the series to start throwing their weight around?
I'm sure the last episode will appear in on form or another on the Internet either with or without Kuro Hana.
There is a special three hour episode of Death Note coming soon:
Death Note Special Information The upcoming Death Note special broadcast, which was announced during the last episode of the animated suspense television series, will be a three-hour Death Note Directors Cut: Compete Ending Edition special that airs at 8:03 p.m. on August 31 on Japans NTV. It will mainly be a compilation of the confrontations between the vigilante Light and the detective L, re-edited from the perspective of Lights Shinigami (God of Death) Ryuk. All-new dialogue and soundtrack will be recorded, and scenes will have additional animation that could not be included in the original series.
I was at the japanese expo last week and was told by Manga UK that they are going to release Death Note on dvd over here, if you want to see pics from the japan expo that i took then go here, www.flickr.com/internutter there are not a lot of them

Well the Anime section (and the rest of the forums) have been filling up so get contributing! And be sure to check out my new Anime Corner on Fan Service!
Finally got volume 12 of the DN Manga today. I hope when they release the DVD they are sensible with the episode allocation per disc meaning they do it in 6 or 7 volumes with 5 or 6 episodes per disc. Sadly, they will probably drag it out with 4 episodes a disc and thus make it a 9 volume set to make more money out of us.
If anyone gets the VIZ DVD release of DN do NOT view the English dub - it absolutely sucks with a capital "S"!
I have been really busy of late and have not been able to come here, i sure have missed a lot, i am only now starting to get back into anime, where is this fan service you speak of

Japenese comic book rattles military school By Sean Muserallo, NBC12 News
A Richmond public school student was suspended over a list of his classmates he wrote in a book titled Death Note.
The student is a senior at Franklin Military Academy in the citys East End. The principal there sent a letter to the parents after a teacher spotted the student reading a list of his classmates names in the book called Death Note.
The student who got in trouble was not in class today Hes suspended pending an investigation.
Senior April Hopkins says shes friends with the student. He doesnt really say much, he just stays to himself, she said.
Hopkins name wasnt on the list, but some of her friends were. She says they dont fear him, and neither does she.
In the letter to parents, the principal directs them to the books website to get a better understanding of how the student came up with the idea. The Japanese comic book is about a high school student who rids the world of evil with the help of a supernatural notebook. Anyone whose name is listed in the book dies.
Theres also a place on the website for people to type in how theyd like to see others die.
So the lad is in trouble for writing some names in a harmless book which in real life wont cause anything to happen.Great, i guess some clown will start a campeign against Death Note now.
I never knew about this until i talked with my friends who raved about this and its a spin off the 2 death note live action films and i think is about the last 23 days of his life but im not entirely sure as i only have a few snippits of info about it! Will have to watch this when im over there next month as i think its been recently released so man..I cant wait!
Going to watch the above movie the second day im in japan :).Looking forward to it.My younger sister bought a ton of Death Note Merchandie online herself (as shes a big anime fan herself and anime artist),and she got this really cool Shingami figurine. She also got the notebook of DeathNote and naturally she wrote my name in it...she also added plane crash on the date i leave!! Horrible girl!!
The first 2 disc volume of the DVD comes out over here next Monday. Shame we didn't get a review copy for CPC Movies...
On the same day there will be a free screening of the first Live action movie in Manchester courtesy of Zavvi, who are selling the DVD with a free figurine of Light Yagami.
The first bunch of people aged 15 or over who go to the Zavvi in the Arndale centre in Manchester on Saturday 26th from 9.00am will get a wristband allowing them a place at the cinema.
It's not over till the fat lady sings... You may need to be watching your mailbox closely this week MiB, although I might give it a watch first to see what all the fuss is about.
You may not want to read the following piece of news, but I thought I better post it anyway...
From AICN
American Death Note In the Development
Shock Till You Drop reports that frequent adaptors of Asian cinema Vertigo (The Departed) are working on a Hollywood adaptation of Death Note, produced by Doug Davison and written by Vlas and Charles Parlapanides.
Based on a manga by Tsugumi Ohba and Takeshi Obata, previously adapted into anime by Madhouse and live action by Shusuke Kaneko, Death Note follows the battle of wits between teen geniuses Light and L. Bored model student Light stumbles onto a tool for carving an impression into the world when he finds a Shinigami/Death God's notebook, with which he can prescribe the time and circumstances of the death of any named individual. After Light uses the book to kill a host of criminals, L is given the case of tracking down the responsible party, which in turn pushes Light toward desperate tactics.
Speaking of Death note, i just pre ordered a 2 disc set of When L changed the world which is fantastic, itll be released on june 21st here i think and on several online shops no doubt. This movie is better then the original 2 films.
I love Deathnote its a great series both in Anime and Manga form, but Monster is superior in everyway such an Amazing anime. Both would be in the top 10 of all time with out a doubt.
Viz Media has Monster so i am sure Manga will release it here at some stage.
Viz is ment to be releasing it in Four boxsets instead of volumes cus the lengh of the series.
So should be same here.
Higurashi no Naku Koro ni is also a great series to watch if you like death note.
Monster is a series I downloaded a while back and is on my "To watch list" - along with a million other titles! Unfortunately, the Yanks have got hold of the rights to make a live action film version of it which is tentatively due out next year.
Death Note Vol 2 (2 discs) is released on July 28th, the same day the first live action film is released on DVD (also 2 discs). Reviews coming soon...
Id like to see that but again theres just to many different animes to get into, i just dont have time or money to see them all :(. The Death Note Films are excellent, i should be getting L change the world in a week or so which should be cool, its better then the first 2 movies i think.
I doubt a majority of the audience would have a clue what death note is if indeed they do a parody of it on the next treehouse of horror, but it would be quite amusing ^-^.The Simpsons bongo comics i dont read but my sister loves them, plus she loves death note just as much i do so this is something shell love ^-^.
Death Note is becoming pretty popular in the US, Totty.
The first film received a limited theatrical release (more than just the preview screenings over here) and the Anime airs on TV over there, with the Manga also selling very well too.
The fact that The Simpsons has picked up on it and deemed it worthy enough to parody should be indicative of its success Stateside.
I like the idea of Bart as Light, Lisa and L and probably Mr. Burns as Ryuk!
Anyway, like I said before having The Simpsons lampoon Death Note is one hell of an endorsement and hopefully will lead to an increased interest in it and possibly Anime/Manga in general as a result.
I can see your avatar dragonmask, but due to the size limitations it is impossible to appreciate it at that size. Perhaps you could post a full sized version?
