Very good episode, and the end of series looks amazing. You-know-who, the main villain, used to scared me to death growing up, and the sound of the voice on the trailer has me hiding all over again.
In terms of recent companions, Tate has probably been my fave...Bille Piper grow better as she went along, but Martha was a bit wooden in the last series, though she improved in this one.
With my excitement and expectation for these last two episodes at an all time high check out the new trailer for this Saturdays episode. There's also a clip called 'Exterminate'(Which doesn't reveal anything)
Nearly killed my girlfriend. I went to the toilet and came back to find next weeks episode on wikipedia sitting on my screen. After managing to close the window whilst averting my eyes she wet herself laughing saying there was no spoiler on the site anyway! Grrrrrrr!
I have heard rumours that the regeneration will indeed have the Docotr regenderate as a woman (Believe it or not it was either Jennifer Saunders or Dawn French) but the twist being that the good Dr had split in to two halves so half the group go on to go and find his other half and put them back together or some claptrap like that.
I don't believe the Ex Prime Ministers story for one second, shes in league with the Daleks. Donnas great loss? Either Cribbins gets it or her herself... There's something on your back? Please tell me RtD hasn't gone all Dallas on us... (It was all a dream)
BUT if he truly does regenerate to a new doctor then the Beeb have pulled off the biggest cover up since Hulk Hogans heel turn at the Bash at the Beach or Cenas return at the Rumble....
Unfortunately I don't have them down as being that clever. It'll be a false regeneration and I have a feeling the hand will come into play. I also think that the Master is going to rear his head in next weeks bumper long episode...
There was an online poll and apparently the fans voted overwhelmingly for that ubiquitous Irish ponce James Nesbitt to be the next Doc. Just what the show doesn't need!
There was a key moment when Donna could hear what seemed to be the Sound of Drums, like The Master...all very intriguing.
Basically saturdays episode was like an old school Royal Rumble or Survivor Series match, with the thrill of seeing all the big stars in the ring at the same time!
David Tennant is confirmed to continue the role through untill the next full series after 2008 (2010). The gap is caused in 2009 due to other commitments David Tennant has... (from Wiki).
Now, I could understand contracts get ripped up etc. but I would be very suprised if the Beeb would miss a whole year of one of their most popular programmes just to cover a plot twist! Only 3 "special" episodes are scheduled for 2009.
Journey's End (Episode 13) has the trailer and an exclusive clip up on the BBC website, there safe to watch as they give away nothing, although is that mickey behind Sarah Jane in that clip??
I wish the BBC and the media would stop giving these things away before hand.
It would have been so much better if the return of the Daleks and Davros in particular was kept a surprise so we can mark out rather than just wait for their reappearance. That's arguably my biggest pet peeve -there are no surprises anymore!
Well, other than what may happen with the regeneration and if the alluded to appearance of the master happens... (They mentioned the sound of the drums in the last episode)
I was talking about in general. Rose's return was hardly kept secret, neither was Martha's, or the Sontarans, the Doctor's daughter, etc. There is no surprise anymore because they keep giving everything away.
And it's not just Doctor Who it's TV dramas and soaps as well. What's the point of having a big storylines if all the BBC,ITV,etc are going to do is let the papers and their own media reveal it in advance? There is no point watching if you already know what is going to happen and more often than not it is a let down too.
It's all about the viewing figures though now. So, the way they do that is by releasing pertinant info that will make the casual viewer switch on. How many people extra watched the first millionaire on Who Wants To Be.... when they released the news to the press, sure it would have been a great surprise, but they wouldn't have got half of the viewing figures.
Same goes for the good Doctor. How may extra 30 somethings watched various episodes that may have not normally becuase of The Sontarians, Daleks Davros etc. and pubescant boys for the return of Billie Piper? It's all about the viewing figures. Sure if you tried hard enough you could probably go in blind, I have to say after finally finding out the it was Davros back in Saturdays episode only a few days before it ramped up my expectation even more.
I understand that but I think they still give away way too much and worry too much about the ratings. The Doctor is always going to draw a good number so they can afford to keep certain big surprises close to their chests instead of revealing it in advance. There is no reason why they can't drop hints (like they have done) and let people speculate instead of saying "this is what is going to happen" then drop the hints when we already know the end result.
A show like Doctor Who has enough of a following that they can afford to keep the developments and returns to themselves and allow the media speculation and rumour mill to entice viewers back. For example - have the brief clips of Rose appearing randomly during the early episodes then allow the press to learn that Billie Piper has signed on to return; finally leave one more major tease until the week before her return and you have plenty of interest with nothing given away until the episode arrives and a waiting audience to see how it unfolds.
And what makes you think it is just pubescent boys who would be interested in Rose's return? Amanda Bynes is younger than Billie Piper you know...
Billie Piper and her growing teeth have no intrest for me...
But half the issue is that certain news items just can't be kept scret. Granted the Davros thing could have, but when Piper is photographed on set filming the papers instantly go for the scoop, thus messing up any surprise return, so the beeb play on it and market it.
It also doesn't help when Chris Moyles is on a video podcast at the place where the character designs are and he walks past the Red (Supreme) Dalek and the Davros chair and pulls a funny face as if to say ooo look at that. Being as he workd for the BBC and they didn't pull that section of the segment says to me they are more intrested in letting everyone know.
Even the Christmas episode is knackered. The Sun and Mirror have already printed pictures of the Cybermen and the good Doctor and a certain Assistant....
Chris Moyles is a twat so you should expect such behaviour from that fat dickhead.
And the BBC should be a powerful enough organisation to impose some sort of embargo on the press to keep quiet should they "happen" to be at a film shoot.
I know why the papers and the BBC allow these leaks but that doesn't mean I have to condone it.
But then you only have to look at the Prince Harry in Iraq situation to know that some fool is going to ignore imbargos... Much like film review ones oops.
MiB, at least the princes are earning a living. Yes they go do nightclubs. Big whoopdie. So do I. And if I could afford it or had the status to, I'd go to the posh places they do. They dont choose to be royal, thats who they're born into. And I dont think I have the guts to go to a warzone, no matter how far from the front line I was.
There are plenty of things to moan about in this country. Many Royals are included in that. But the princes deserve more respect than they get.
Did anyone see Graham Norton last night? His guest were Catherine Tate, who I have to say was very good and James Nesbitt! A future contender for the Doctors job sitting with the current assistant? Coincidence? Im not so sure...
Was good indeed, nice simple ending with it just being the Doc alone in his tardis with no spoiler or any clue as to what will happen in the next series.I just cant stand Catherine Tate though, shes good at the parts where she acts seriously, but shes just so unfunny when she tries to be,it annoys me.No real surprises but good fun and way to end the show for this time.
I hate to say it but I do have to give Catherine Tate her due for actually being able to act when it mattered in the show. She is still very samey in the comedy moments but she delivered in the dramatic scenes.
Agreed. She should be a serious actress because her comedy work is so poor, but she has some genuine ability as a serious actress.Isnt there a series 5 of Docter Who? from what i read next year there is only a couple of tv specials of the show rather then the usual 12 part?
I thought it was a good episode too, I liked the two doctors and I really liked the fact that Donna saved the day.
The bits I had noticed in earlier episodes were clues to what would happen. I noticed that at the end of the Pompey episode and at the end of the episode with those creatures with the brains that they hold they both had a bit where they said they will remember Doctor Donna. I thought it was funny at the time how it was said, Doctor Donna, not Doctor and Donna. But I never imagined what Doctor Donna would mean.
I liked Donna's character because she said things that I would say in those situations, so I was dissapointed when Donna was left not remembering but I guess it was a way for her to leave.
and at the end of the episode with those creatures with the brains that they hold
or the Ood to the rest of us!
Apparently the bookies are laughing because people were betting on who the new Doctor would be, but of course we were swerved by the non-regeneration! Ha!
The series finale got a whopping 9.4 million people! Please be aware for those of you who haven't yet watched Saturdays episdode the following has spoilers in it.. from the beeb:
The finale to the latest series of Doctor Who was seen by an average audience of 9.4m people on BBC One.
The final 15 minutes of the drama pulled in 9.8m viewers, capturing close to 50% of the entire TV audience.
After the Time Lord was wounded by a Dalek at the end of last week's episode, speculation had mounted that the Doctor would regenerate.
In a closely-guarded storyline, this failed to happen, leaving the way clear for actor David Tennant's return.
Unexpected twists
A fifth series of the show is scheduled for 2010.
In Saturday's episode the Doctor was helped by a small army of his companions to once again defeat the Daleks and their evil creator Davros to save the universe.
In an episode packed with unexpected twists, the Doctor was cloned and current companion Catherine Tate's character Donna Noble absorbed some of his mind to become half-Time Lord.
At the end of the episode the Doctor left his cloned self - who was half-human and as such will age and die - to live with his former companion Rose Tyler, played by Billie Piper, in another reality. The Doctor also separated from Donna, who had to have her mind wiped of all memories of their time together, before departing on his own in the Tardis.
Tennant has been confirmed to star in the lead role for a number of BBC One specials next year.
The fifth series, with Bafta-winning writer Steven Moffat at the helm, is scheduled to be broadcast on BBC One early the following year.
Moffat is to take over from current writer and executive producer, Russell T Davies, from 2010.
OK so I enjoyed the last episode despite the swerve of the regeneration which I did feel a little let down by. I thought they did try to cram far too much into this episode and it times it was a bit all too much.
However Catherine Tate was superb in this episode and the half doctor/donna interplay between her and Tennant was fantastic. However in typicl T Dvaies style he threw it all in way too early and we now lose yet another assistant.
The payoff for Rose was coming a mile off as soon as Doc 2 turned up. The Daleks were rendered inconsiqunetial where they used to be proper scary now they turn up for an episode or two and then get killed. hardly the scourge of the universe? Hopefully Davros escaped for future reference.
I also thought that they gave in a bit on the 'death' of the assistant too. Although the idea of Martha (Which was alaways on the cards) joining Torchwood and also in a deft move Mickey is cool.
Bernard 'Wilf' Cribbins was absolutely brilliant as well. I look forward to the Cyber Christmas and I already knew that they were in it but after all this secrecy surrounding this episode they could have kept a lid on it for a while....
Finally I did really, really enjoy thisepisode and I am gladd that Davies is now off penning duties hopefully Moffatt will bring some new vigour and less homoeroticism to the show.
Now lets spark up the discussion on which 'Classic' villians you would like to see back going forward? I want to see the Zygons myself.
Problem is other than say the Ood they haven't established any other charcters/foes for the Doctor since Peter Davidsons era. McCoys slug villan things were too lame although they kept bringing them back. They do rely on old villans a bit too much (Daleks, Cybermen, The Master and now The Sontarians), not that I mind, but like I previously mentioned they bring them back and kill them off all too easily thus negating any menace they ever had.
I would like to see a finale built up across the series (Much like this season) that ends with a classic villan turning up with forward knowlede. Although who they bring in I have no idea. is there any forward thought on the new assistant yet?
