Discuss any new Anime releases on DVD or at the cinema in the UK in this thread.
I'll start with:
++ SPEED GRAPHER - VOLUME 1 (MVM). Available to buy on DVD from 16th April 2007.
New from Gonzo Digimation (Afro Samurai; Samurai 7; Gantz; Burst Angel) comes the gritty science-fantasy animated series for mature viewers, SPEED GRAPHER, a potent and provocative cocktail of forbidden sex, blood-spattered violence, conspiracy and intrigue. Add to that mix an ultra-cool anti-hero, a beautiful teenage Goddess, a fetishistic female detective and an ever-expanding line-up of genetically mutated super-assassins who make the X-Men look lame in comparison, and you have one of the most thrilling and imaginative anime series of the year.
Once addicted to the rush of working in the line of fire, burned out ex-war photographer Saiga has been reduced to selling his artistic soul as a tabloid photojournalist in the near-future dystopian city of Tokyo. It is a morally corrupt society in which the rich get rich while the poor get poorer, and where even the most taboo desires can be satisfied for a price.
In the midst of yet another seemingly dull paparazzi assignment, Saiga infiltrates an underground den of vice that specializes in pandering to the warped sexual desires of city's wealthiest and most powerful citizens. There, he witnesses a depraved ceremony in which the Goddess, a beautiful young girl named Kagura, is about to bestow a dangerous gift upon a more-than-willing victim. When his cover is blown, Saiga is only saved from certain death by a kiss from Kagura. It is a brief exchange that mysteriously gives Saiga a devastating new, supernatural ability. Forced to flee from his enemies with the young girl in tow, Saiga is plunged into a living nightmare in which he must confront his inner demons while trying to uncover the secret behind his remarkable transformation.
Meanwhile, unknown to Saiga and those who wish to see him dead, Kagura's single, fateful kiss has ignited a chain of events that could destroy the entire social structure of Tokyo and bring the city to its knees.
Another great title to look out for methinks!

Perfect timing for my birthday, this is going on my list
This may be a stupid question, but is that Love Hina box set the only series there was? I ask because I have seen other box sets of series and many of them are later series and they put me off buying as I know without seeing them from the beginnning I will be missing out on a lot.
Yes, there was just one TV series of Love Hina and a 3 OVA's, all based on the Manga. So we have in order:
Love Hina - TV series 25 episodes Love Hina Xmas Special: Silent Eve (45 minute OVA) Love Hina Spring Special: I Wish Your Dream (45 minute OVA) Love Hina Again - OVA 3 episodes
The box set I mentioned before will be the 25 episode TV series. There is a Region 1 (US) box set available that features the three OVAs called the Love Hina Movie Collection but I don't think it has a UK release just yet.
I would guess that is because we have to wait for the Yanks to get the distribution licences, and they have to finish faffing about with their poxy dubbing and what have you, and then there is the NTSC to PAL conversions for the DVDs and finally the BBFC have to rate it...
If they skipped the dubbing side of it and just had it translated and subbed then sent it over I reckon the release dates would be much quicker. Seriously if fan subs of Death Note can be on the Net 24 hours after the show aired in Japan, then by extrapolation there isn't any real reason why there isn't a quicker turn around for the DVD releases.
Foreign language films which have been subbed can be released inside 6 months on DVD so why not Anime?
99.9% of Anime DVD releases have the language/subtitle option now. The range of options you listed is pretty much the standard on a lot of titles from the likes of MVM and ADV these days. Sometimes just have the basic Japanese vs English language / subtitles options.
Only very old series on the Manga label like Robotech will be dubbed only which is a shame.
Thats cool that they have that option now as it puts the power to decide in the watchers hands instead of the people making the DVD.
Going back to Love Hina, I can't believe the DVD's are only PG and 12 ratings. I have watched the first DVD in the set and part of the second and although it doesn't have nudity, some of the drawings are revealing. For example the girls wearing towels in the hot springs. But the thing that stuck me so much is how suggestive it is and that the ones I have watched were only rated PG.
Love Hina sounds very intresting, i only have read the mangas, but not yet seen the anime,i actually dont want to buy any animes of the mangas i have until iv read every one of them (Apart from Prince of Tennis! Though i love school rumble as a manga, the anime doesnt seem to have the same humour or charm as the book so sometimes, its not as enjoyable in anime form from the book, for me anyway! Its always best to watch anime with the original sound rather then the awful dubbing though as Nymvette said, its good to have the choice.

That's Fan Service for you!
You get that a lot in Anime. I think the censors realise now that you can see saucier stuff in pop videos so they're letting it go. My HiME has a lot of that and that is only 12 rated title.
I watched the first volume of Gantz the other day and besdies the graphic gore and f-words, in the first episode not only do you see female nudity but they very strongly alluded to a dog licking a girl out and this got a 15 rating instead of 18!!

I've made it to disk 5 of the Love Hina box set. Disks 1 to 4 are all PG rating and I thought those were suggestive. Disks 5 and 6 are rated 12. I've watched the first two episodes on disk 5 and I can see why its a 12. Its become even more suggestive and the clothing has become more revealing. Even in the hot springs where they wore towels in the water they now appear to be naked, although you don't get to see anything as it's all hidden under the water.
I was going to post all about Love Hina for you poulpy, but I see MiB has linked to the Wiki site which has much more than I can write.
I have now seen the whole series box set and I really enjoyed it. I have to say my favourite character is Shinobu Maehara, she is just so cute and sweet.
Hey Eve, you can still start a proper discussion thread on Love Hina giving a brief rundown of the story and sharing your thoughts. I'm sure in time others will post once they've seen it themselves.
"SIMPLY SHOULD NOT BE MISSED" *FIVE STARS* SFX MAGAZINE
The highly anticipated third feature-length film in the Ghost In The Shell series, GHOST IN THE SHELL: STAND ALONE COMPLEX SOLID STATE SOCIETY, comes to DVD (as a double disc edition) this summer boasting an extraordinary storyline that will delight and astonish fans in equal measure.
Written and directed by Kenji Kamiyama (Ghost In The Shell: S.A.C. 2nd GIG; Blood: The Last Vampire) and produced by the same creative team responsible for the hugely successful Stand Alone Complex series, this completely new and all-original chapter in the action-packed sci-fi saga is as thematically and visually breathtaking as its predecessors.
The year is 2034; two years after Major Motoko Kusanagi left Public Security Section 9, the elite counter-terrorist and anti-crime unit specializing in cyber warfare. In that time, Section 9 has increased its appointed personnel to 20 operatives, with Togusa taking over as leader of the unit.
Section 9's latest assignment sees the team confronted by a rash of mysterious suicides involving operatives of the disbanded Siak Republic, many of whom had sought asylum in Japan. They manage to track down Ka Gae-Ru, a former Siak Colonel who has taken a hostage in the hope of negotiating safe passage out of the country. Confronted by Section 9, a fearful Gae-Ru issues a cryptic warning that The Puppeteer is coming, before killing himself. Investigations suggest that The Puppeteer is an ultra-wizard hacker who is not only responsible for the recent spate of suicides but is also behind a series of child abductions. But who is the Puppeteer and what is the connection to the so-called Solid State Society? An unexpected encounter between Batou and Major Motoko leaves the former with his own theory, one that is almost impossible to comprehend.
The two-disc GHOST IN THE SHELL: STAND ALONE COMPLEX SOLID STATE SOCIETY (cert. 15) will be released on DVD by Manga Entertainment on 20th August 2007.
Special Features include: Uchikoma Days; Storyboard Subtitles; English Production Interview; World Work File; Anime and Car Design Redesigning the Future Car; Making Of Tachikoma Robot; Mitsuhisa Ishikawa (Production IG) Interview.
If you saw Voices From A Distant Star last night on Anime Network and liked it then you will be interested to learn that on September 3rd it will be released on DVD though ADV films.
Under the title The Shinkai Collection it is paired with Makoto Shinkai's other feature The Place Promised In Our Early Days on 1 disc.
Heads up folks - the long awaited new film from Satoshi Kon (Perfect Blue, Millennium Actress) will get its release on DVD on 24th September.
Based on the 1993 novel by Yasutaka Tsutsui, Paprika is the tale of Dr. Atsuki Chiba and her alter ego Paprika who helps other people analyse their dreams by entering into them and recording them via a new device called the DC Mini. When the prototypes are stolen it is up to Paprika to save Tokyo from a "dream terrorist" who uses the DC Minis to turn his fantasies into reality.
Fans of Kon's reality bending work will no doubt enjoy his latest work which is already being hailed as another masterpiece.
Just a heads up to let you guys know that GITS: SAC: Solid State Society was released last Monday and you can get it on Play.com for £11.99 for the 2 disc set.
++ NARUTO THE MOVIE: NINJA CLASH IN THE LAND OF SNOW (Manga Entertainment). Available to buy on DVD from 26th November 2007.
The first big screen spin-off from the phenomenally successful Naruto anime series, comes to DVD with all the outrageous fun and ninja action fans expect from the series, but this time it's bigger and better than ever before.
Naruto, Sasuke and Sakura are mystified as to why Kakashi would send them to the cinema to watch a movie in preparation for their next mission, but all becomes apparent when they are given the job of guarding a beautiful but diva-like actress during the making of her next movie. Unknown to those around her, the actress in question is actually the true princess of the Land of Snow, a territory taken over by a band of rogue ninjas responsible for the assassination of Yukie's father and who have now turned their attentions to his daughter. In no time at all, what should have been a simple bodyguarding assignment for Naruto, Sasuke, Sakura and Kakashi quickly degenerates into a series of deadly battles between good and evil, with life dangerously reflecting the art of the movies.
NARUTO THE MOVIE: NINJA CLASH IN THE LAND OF SNOW (cert. 15) will be released on DVD (£17.99) by Manga Entertainment on 26th November 2007.
According to Animetion, Revelation Films have lined up the first season of Hell Girl (a.k.a Jigoku Shojo) for a UK DVD release starting in February 2008. The supernatural mystery is a 26 episode series that aired in Japan during 2006; the story follows a young "Hell Girl" who deals out murderous revenge requested via a mysterious website.
I have this series (and the sequel Jigoku Shojo Futakomori) and it looks pretty good. A sort of Death Note via the Internet. There is also a live action series although I only have 4 episodes of that.
Discuss any new Anime releases on DVD or at the cinema in the UK in this thread.

Earlier this morning we received confirmation from Manga Entertainment that they intend to release the 37-episode Death Note anime TV series in the UK. Contrary to the listings on online shops, there's still no confirmed release date. The short official statement reads as follows:
"After much speculation about Death Note, I can now confirm with you that Manga Entertainment will indeed be releasing the series in the UK. We can't currently confirm dates just yet and we are aware that there is a listing on Play and Amazon."
Another great new release confirmed by Anime UK news:
Beez Entertainment have today confirmed their acquisition of fan favourite sci-fi/comedy 'The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya', with monthly consecutive UK DVD releases slated to begin on the 24th of May (at the London Expo) and running through to 8th August (the final volume will be debuting at UK anime convention AmeCon 2008).
As a way of encouraging you to "buy from the UK release" rather than import, Beez will be using "the Madman Entertainment (based in Australia) masters, bringing you the highest video quality possible" and providing customers with "all the extra goodies you can imagine - just like you saw in the US". The press release goes on to say "each volume will have a regular release of £19.99, while the Volume 1 LE will cost an RRP of £39.99 and the other 3 LE's will have an RRP of £34.99."
The is a very popular series both in Japan and internationally so hopefully it will repeat that success over here too. The dance routine in the closing credits have became a cult thing in Japan where Otaku get to together and perform it in random public places!
