Anime Network on UK TV!
Permalink Closed

This news comes from Anime UK News:

TV media website C21Media.net have posted an interesting statement from Sony Pictures, claiming they intend to expand their Animax anime digital TV channel across Europe - and that includes in the UK, where Sony are apparently in "advanced discussions" to launch.

"Sony Pictures Television International (SPTI) is in advanced discussions for the launch of its Animax anime channel brand in the UK, Germany, Italy, Spain and France following a roll-out in central Europe." "The company said it would be making further announcements regarding expansion plans for Animax over the next few weeks. The anime channel is already firmly established in Asia and Latin America, where it is one of SPTI's most successful channels, airing 24 hours a day in 36 million homes in 38 countries and in 11 languages." "The European roll-out is kicking off in central Europe with the A+ overhaul, where the Animax brand has already been teased to viewers. A+ has four million subscribers and airs between 20.00 and 02.00 each day. SPTI is due to revise this later in the year with additional programming and time slots."

In other countries, Animax has been a home to such anime as Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex, Cowboy Bebop, InuYasha and Full Metal Alchemist.

I hope this happens and it would show how seriously they took this if they showed subbed Anime too, as that is the preferred method of viewing for most Anime fans.

And it would save us all a few quid too! wink

Anyone else excited about this?

This would be so cool if it happened, I woudl watch it.

I really hope they do sub and not dub, but maybe they will think the mainstream audience will prefer dubbed and go that way?

Thanks Symph. I've just checked it out and Gilgamesh is on at 2.30pm!!

I belive that if this Anime channel takes off then they will probably run dubbed versions first then repeat them with subs later. They could posisbly do it as a day = dubbed, night = subbed format.

Not quite a whole channel but a good start:

Promising to bring UK viewers an edgy fusion of top offerings from America's #1 Anime Channel, ADV Films and Propeller TV have announced the launch of an Anime Network programming block. The new two-hour block-presented by Sci-Fi Guy extraordinaire Stuart Claw (T4) and manga maven Emma Vieceli (TOKYOPOP UK & Ireland Rising Star of Manga) - debuts on Propeller TV (SKY Channel 195) on 3 June and will air 8:00-10:00pm on Sundays.

Injected with plenty of action, adventure, science fiction and horror, the exciting lineup of animated series includes such favorites as Coyote Ragtime Show, Neon Genesis Evangelion, Guyver: The Bio-Boosted Armour and Elfen Lied, all of which already boast hoards of fans the world over. Today's news marks the first transatlantic programming deal for Anime Network, which already reaches more than 40 million households in North America and draws from the world's largest anime libraries.

"We are undoubtedly thrilled at the opportunity to reach and entertain Propeller TV's UK viewers through this very cool programming block," said Stacy Dodson, Anime Network's Director of Programming. "Propeller already speaks to an audience rife with pop-culture sensibilities, so the lineup we've crafted should resonate well."

Added ADV Films' Hugh David, who orchestrated the deal: "Anime Network and Propeller TV have a natural synergy that we recognized and tapped into in developing the block. The audience is right. The content is right. The timing couldn't be better."

Programming Highlights:

* Coyote Ragtime Show - So long, suckers. Say sayonara to Planet Graceland! Insurrection will not be tolerated! And to prove the point, the government has set a big, bad bomb to blast Graceland right out of the sky! Bullets, blades, bombs and busty beauties... if it's capable of destruction or distraction, it's fair game in this chilling, thrilling, killing, blood-spilling series!

* Neon Genesis Evangelion - The year is 2015, and half of the Earth's population is dead, victims of the disaster called Second Impact! Answering a summons from his enigmatic father, 14-year-old Shinji Ikari arrives in the rebuilt city of New Tokyo-3 just as a gigantic creature identified as an "Angel" attacks! Forced into the ****pit of a giant bio-mechanical construct known as an Evangelion, Shinji must defend the city from the rampaging Angel or die trying!

* Guyver: The Bioboosted Armour - Lurking under the face of everyday life is a dark world of pain and destruction... a world controlled by a sinister brotherhood that hides its fangs behind masks of humanity, known as the Chronos Corporation. Anime Network presents this sci-fi anime legend in the most complete rendition of Guyver ever animated.

* Elfen Lied - Lucy is a psychopathic killer with powers beyond any humans. Nyu is aelpless child with no memories. Both could not be farther apart, but both find themselves inside the same body. Two students that have taken in Nyu find their world being turned around as the government sets out to kill Lucy. A strange story of romance and chaos as innocence and darkness collide in a series like nothing you've ever seen.

This is great news although I presume the shows will be the dubbed versions. Anyway, mark your diaries folks! biggrin.gif

Yes I am looking forward to it.

When you say it will air 8 to 10pm, is that 8am or 8pm? 8pm would mean its only on for 2 hours a day?

I assume it's 8.00 PM but what that would then mean is that the shows they have will run one after another rather than all episodes in one slot.

Basically, 4 episodes (or 1 DVD volume) would make up a 2 hour slot with ads. That's my guess anyway. It's better than nothing...wink.gif

It's dissapointing that it will only be 2 hours a night. Its also the 2 hours that I watch the least TV, but as you said it is better than nothing I guess. If they put it on all day I suppose there will be lots of repeats and people would become sick of seeing the same thing over and over.

I've just had a look at Propeller TV and it only runs from 8.00pm to 3.00am anyway. There is just a message screen saying pogrammes start at 5.00pm, from which time you get three hours of teleshoping before the real programmes start. And those are a bunch of disparate and obsscure shows too.

I'm assuming that if the word gets out and the Anime crowd tune in, Propeller TV will get its highest ratings ever starting in 2 weeks.

Just to remind everyone that this begins tomorrow night on SKY Ch 195 from 8.00pm to 10.00pm.

As per the notice posted a few posts above this, the SKY EPG has confirmed the four initial shows that will run in this slot are:

Coyote Ragtime (a brand new show just released on DVD over here)
Neon Genesis Evangelion (one of the most popular and controversial Animes of all time)
Gyver (Not sure if this is the new or original series)
Elfen Lied (watching this now. Ultra violent and heart breaking at the same time)

Unfortunately it looks like I'll be missing some of this so I won't know if these are dubbed or subbed or will air uncut (in the case of Elfen Lied) so if anyone else gets to see this then pleas feel free to share your thoughts and opinions.

Can't series link, so I'll have to remember to set it to record each week.

I can't edit my previous post, so I'll have to double post.

I have now watched all 4 shows from the recording and I did enjoy them all.

They are all dubbed into english, and as far as I can tell they don't appear to have been cut, at least the two shown after 9pm were gory.

I am looking forward to seeing the second episodes next week but out of all four I would say Gyver I liked the most, closely followed by Elfen Lied, then the other two come joint third.

As I said in the other thread really starting to enjoy Coyote Ragtime Show, I have now managed to watch the second episodes of EVA and Guyver.

Really impressed with the second episode of Guyver, it was very good and Guyver kicks ass!

I was a little dissapointed with the second episode of EVA, I'm unsure about this series now, I hope the third episode improves, will just have to wait and see.

Sorry to double post here but I can't edit my previous post and no one else is commenting.

I have to say the presenters on the show are quite good and I love the female presenters style of clothing. I actually look forward to see what she wears this week. It has a very japanese influence as you would expect and the fact she is pretty cute helps of course wink

I read in the SFX magazine that as well as this channel on sunday nights, ADV will be giving downloads and rental of anime via lovefilm.com at some point.

Sorry about a double post again, but have some more information about the channel, because it's by ADV, all shows are the ADV versions, I have been reliably informed that Guyver for example is not the original. It is very similar to the original but what happens in the first two episodes of the one on TV happened in the first episode of the original. The way he got the guyver is also apparently different to the original too.

That's because this is a "remake" if you will of the Guyver tale. I guess the previous series and the two flop Hollywood films left a bad taste in theri mouths that they decided to have another go.

It seems the news about Anime central arriving has forced some changes within Anime Network according to Anime News UK:

From September 8th, ADV's "Anime Network" (Sky Digital TV channel 195) will be expanding to 7 days (8PM until 10PM), with new episode premieres screening on Saturday and Sunday evenings.

The Saturday line-up will be Azumanga Daioh, Kurau: Phantom Memory, Pani Poni Dash and This Ugly Yet Beautiful World, while Sunday includes Guyver (2006), Innocent Venus, Jinki: Extend and Neon Genesis Evangelion.

I guess we know what will be replacing Elfen Lied now.

I don't get it, so the shows will be premier on Saturday and Sunday, so will the week day shows just be repeats of the weekends?

I am just trying to figure out how much space all this is going to take on my parents sky plus box as I just about get to watch the 4 episodes I record on a sunday at the moment.

Although this week I am watching live to see the final episode of Elfen Lied.

Presumably, it will be four hours of first run episodes on Saturday and Sunday with repeats (again presumably alternating each day) during the week if you miss the first run showings.

So you need to have 4 hours of disk space a week for the new episodes.

I have just been on www.animenetwork.co.uk their schedule on there seems really messed up, for most of the dates they are listing the shows as Coyote Ragtime Show, EVA, Guyver and Elfen Lied all episode 1. They must have messed it up.

Well I will be keeping an eye on it so I know what days to record on sky. As for the current lot I have so far transferred 7 sundays worth on the Anime Network onto DVD to watch again and again.

Don't forget that Saturday night is Shojo power night - in other words programmes devoted to the female tastes (although the last two shows seem more shonen to me).

Azumanga Daioh and PaniPoni Dash are school comedies (the latter is totally manic) while This Ugly Yet Beautiful World and Kurau: Phantom Memory are more serious. This week's episode of This Ugly... features plenty of fan service so Nymvette will like it! wink.gif

OK I have got around to watching the first episodes of Azumanga Daioh, PaniPoni Dash and This Ugly Yet Beautiful World.

The first two were enjoyable if a little strange. Very similar characters in the two stories I think. They are clearly aimed more at the female audience as I found them enjoyable like I said but my boyfriend wasn't keen on them at all, but then he isn't really in Anime so I am going to show him Elfen Lied as I hope that will get him hooked!

This Ugly Yet Beautiful World was weird and a little nudity in the very first episode which always helps wink I am looking forward to the second episode after MiB's comment about fan service.

I have to say that Azumanga Diaoh was a little too cutsey for my tastes and Paniponi Dash just did my head in. The US dubs take it way over the top which is why I found Excel Saga a little hard to follow as an English dub when it aired on Rapture.

...Beautiful World had a lot more humour and fan service than I thought it would but seeing as it a Chobits-esque story about a naked alien girl falling from Outer Space then I shouldn't have been too surprised.

The last new show Kurau Phantom Memory may be the sleeper hit here.

The thing that annoys me with the dubs is that characters from Osaka they give a southern USA accent.

I see what you mean about Kurau Phantom Memory, it is really good and what you said about the artwork is different from many other Anime in the way they draw the female characters. I am really starting to enjoy this series too, I think it's up there with Elfen Lied on my list of favourites.

In case anyone has wondered where the presenters of Anime Network have gone, Emma Vicelli explains:

Hey guys and so, so, so sorry for our silence.

As the keen eyed amongst you will have spotted - Stu and I were absent from tonight's show. Thank you so much for the sweet comments; you know how much we love you all, right? *hug*

Firstly, my huge and profound apologies for our recent silence. It's been a period of change for one reason or another at AN. If it were up to us, believe me, you know we'd have been saying more, but - as often with these things - it's not, and we have to of course respect the system. As such, our hands have been a little tied. ^_^

Okay, this is going to be tough to say, and I am deeply sorry that there's been no official announcement, but it looks like it falls to me to let you know (since the show has already gone out) that Stu and I will not be returning to ANUK

Well, we're of course here in spirit, and the anime lurve will never leave us - hehe...but not in the way that we have been up until now.

Before any conclusions are leapt to, I can't of course say much about the situation at ANUK at the moment (as there's only so much I know myself) but rest assured that we were not fired - no one has fallen out and viewing support has been great (thank you all SOOOOO much!)...more information should hopefully be posted soon by the people with the authority and knowledge to share, but I wanted to of course respond in some way to the questions about tonight as you all more than deserve some information.

You're all awesome and we have had such an amazing time sharing ANUK with you. Long live anime in the UK! RAWK!

Of course, should you miss us, we're both still very much 'around' and keeping very busy...No escape on the internets! Don't forget to check out Stu's radio show every Wednesday at http://dtrn.co.uk , my ongoing mangaaaaa stuffage at emma.sweatdrop.com (amongst other places) and of course come say hi to us both at the Expos if you're around. http://www.londonexpo.com

Again, you're all awesome. I am keeping my fingers crossed for some kind of official announcement about where things go next soon. For now, that's the news from us. It's been an awesome ride and I hope that in some small way we have perhaps affected the course of Anime's path into the UK...I look forward to seeing where it goes from here! ^_^

And Stuart Claw adds:

Hi All

Well as you all may well have noticed this week marked the end of Emma and I's presenting run. I know Emma has posted her feelings earlier and to be honest I will keep mine short as I dont want to repeat anything she has said. I would just like to say that for any presenter 37 episodes is quite an achievement and one that couldnt have been made without the hard work and support of a lot of people, I won't name drop as they know who they are, my heartfelt thanks go to them. I would also like to thank each and everyone one that has shown their support to this project, you have all been fantastic and made working on this project incredibley gratifying on a personal and proffessional level, so thank you.

Over the last few days I may appear to have not been online but I have been and have been following your comments and one in particular has stuck out to me, "The Faces Of Anime in the UK". Whilst I must admit to being extremely flattered and touched by such comments as these, I have to say that the true faces of Anime in this country are all of you. By you, I mean those who watch the shows, buy them on DVD, Cosplay, attend events, all of you who do your part no matter how small to further the cause of Anime in this country. It is my belief that if all of you continue to do this and continue to demand the best from those who produce the product and also in turn get the word out, then it wont be long before the genre gets the boost it needs in this country.

Anyway before I get all emotional, I will wrap this up and say and at the risk of repeating Emma, we will both still be online and furthering the cause (www.dtrn.co.uk is my site featuring anime and manga reviews) whenever the opportunity presents itself.

Oh and I have two more people to thank, Emma and Hugh, thank you doesnt seem enough for allowing me to work and write with you two. So thats my piece, thank you, once again for allowing us the honour of entertaining you for 37 shows.

May life bring you all you desire and of course Anime!!

Stuart Claw

There is a rumour that ADV may have signed or been approached by one of the other channels (possibly Anime Central or the supposed new chanel from Sony/ Animax) which might mean the end of AN.

But at this time that is nothing but speculation and conjecture.

Actually I am about 3 weeks behind on Anime Network, now Bleach has started again and GITS 2nd GiG has ended I may catch up with them now.

The idea of the presenters was wearing a bit thin anyway, as I watch recordings of the show I skip through their bits now as I jsut don't have the time to watch it all.

Well looks like Anime Network is gone now.

Been looking at some posts on their forum and looks like there have been some contract issues between AN(ADV) and Propellor. This maybe why the presenters went and now the show is gone too.

To be honest I won't really miss it as it was showing rubbish series at the end except for Kurau Phantom Memory.

It also gives me more time to watch the Anime Central series which looks like some new interesting ones coming and the continuation of Bleach.

Yes I liked Guyver but that finished a few weeks before the channel did.

Azumanga Diaoh was funny at first but became repetitive and tedious which just made it too annoying to watch.

Anime UK news:

Of course, the most saddening development is the sudden and still unexplained departure of ADV UK's "Anime Network" TV channel from Sky Digital. Rather interestingly, its exit has coincided with ADV US killing North America's 24/7 "Anime Network" TV station too, leading to speculation (which certainly rings true with Emma Vieceli's earlier dialogue) that culling the UK's strand was simply a consequence of an ADV business decision.
