A few things Totty:

1) Lucy and Nyu are the split personalities of the same person.

2) The little girl with the dog is Mayu and she remains in the show.

3) I don't know if it's on your DVD set but there is an OVA that actually explains a lot of stuff while not spoiling the flow of the show. It aired in Japan after episode 10 but it works as a reflective standalone. I uploaded it a while back if you want to see it.

Again, thanks for the info Mib ^^.I guess i sound a bit silly in my posts but having no knowladge of this anime and such,its nice to learn more about it without spoiling to much.Glad to hear the girl remains in the show, i hope the dog to ^_^ but i dont think the dvd set i have has that. Its the english release so im doubting so.As for Lucy and Nya,of course i know its the same girl ^-^.

Oh I'm sure you understood the Nyu/Lucy split personality deal. But I just wanted you to know that it is actually relevant to separate the two characters despite being the same girl.

I can't wait to hear your thoughts about Nana's first meeting with Lucy....

well they have just met so im guessing the next episode is going to focus on those two! Its really good so far and the animation is really fantastic.Still im a bit nervous with each episode just hoping nothing truly horrible happens ^^!

OMG you have to tell us once you've watched the Lucy/Nana episode.

Trying not to ruin any of the future episodes for you I'll just say don't let anything like the violence and sad scenes put you off watching the rest as it really is worth it for such a great anime.

Well iv cheated a little and had a sneak of this episode and it looked heartbreaking because poor nana.....Im going to watch it with at least a hint of what happened now.As you said nymvette, its a great anime, but man i am to bloody sensitive! After watching this episode, i probably wont ^-^ but it was a good episode but Nana..Shes really sweet, i hate that he used her to try kill off Nyu and at the end with half her limbs missing..Just made me feel so sad..This can be tough to watch at times.To tell you the truth, i cant help feeling sad about it, even if its just an anime ^^, i care to easily which is always a problem when watching such a sad show or movie :).Oh well, good episode and disc 2 next, episode 5 which i might watch later or tomorrow.Im taking it slowely as you can guess!

That was a really upsetting episode and possibly one of the worst for that, but hang in there.

I have shown my boyfriend a few anime series and he isn't too sure about them, then I showed him Elfen Lied and now he just wants to see more of it, plus I am enjoying watching it again aww

If you're going to get people into Anime then it's best to "ease" them into it, especially if they don't understand Japanese culture.

I would recommend starting off with Miyazaki's movies (Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke, My Neighbour Totoro) and series like FMA, EVA, Bleach and the like before unleashing the gruesome stuff.

As for Elfen Lied, I squirmed at some of the more "unabashed" scenes like Nyu wetting herself in episode 1, the prepubescent nudity of Nana and the other Dicloni, and some of the stuff with Mayu (that you haven't seen yet Totty) rather than the violence.

thanks again guys ^_^.Watched the episode again yesterday just to try fully understand what was going in and it broke my heart really, Nana was really a gentle little thing and i have to admit it made me weep a little at the end.Also the story with Mayu really does tear me up..I just want to reach into the screen and grab her and her little dog and take care of them myself ^^,such a lovely little girl and character.Im saddened to hear some things will happen to Mayu in future episodes but i hope nothing really bad! Its been a pretty tough show so far but really really good.
Its not for the weak hearted like myself though thats for sure ^-^.

5th episode watched now, nice background story on Mayu but it was heartbreaking and it made me furious with her mother who was so cruel to poor Mayu.Nice ending with Lucy and that guy,which he got what he deserved.

Actually, the fact that you have become so emotionally involved with these characters to have such feeling shows the power of the storytelling and the acting. It's definitely one of the true strengths of Anime over "regular" cartoons".

As I say, I found those scenes with Mayu particularly hard to watch because of how graphic they were. Not just the nudity but the scenes where she dropped her skirt made me feel uncomfortable but then again the Japanese are very unabashed in their depictions of such situations.

Also, seeing Nana on the operating table all bandaged up with just a head and torso left was a tad disturbing for me too.

Sadly Totty round about episode 8 and 9 there is more to come that will make you squirm...

I guess your right Mib. Im currently watching Final Fantasy Unlimited at the same time, as good as that is,i could care less about any of the characters in that so far, yet from the very first 2 episodes,iv already became attatched to some of the characters, espicially my love for little Mayu and her dog.The scenes with her mom and that man...really did shock me as well, and actually made me quite angry,i really wanted to beat his brains in when he had that evil smile as he made her lose her clothes..That Nana episode really broke me to.Now you said i should becareful of 8 and 9..im looking foward to seeing them, yet...im not sure if i can! A fantastic anime series which really does provoke all kinds of emotion and feeling.

Well its getting quite strong this show and it shocks me how graphic it really can be with even young children being slaughtered brutally..Its not my kind of anime at all yet im being drawn it by its fantastic story and the excellent characters but theres been so many moments that have torn my heart,that have made me angry or feel really shocked, and really, i never expected this to have been so powerful. Im closing in on the end of the anime with just 4 left now but boy...i cant go through all the shows in detail but man its really strong.

yep finished it a while ago, it got all chaotic in the last few shows but it was great climax to a fantastic show.What freaked me out was the shadow just as the credits came to a close at the door of the girl (i forget her name..as usual!)! Fantastic anime series that ranks up as one of the greatest of all time, im my opinion.

Yes I would say watch the OVA, it is subtitled and not dubbed so you get to hear their real voices so to speak.

It does explain so much and parts of it will make you feel very happy I would guess as they did for me.

No it's not on DVD (which surprised me as as it's only one episode).

The download is straight forward. It's not a torrent - it's a direct download so you save it straight to any folder you like. With Megaupload you need to enter the code, wait 45 seconds then the "download now" button appears where the countdown was at teh bottom of the main box. If you've got a decent broadband connection then it should only take about 10 minutes.
