PWInsider.com is sorry to report the passing of WWE Hall of Famer Sherri Martel, real name Sherri Russel today. A former WWF and AWA Women's champion, Martel is probably best remembered for her role of one of the best female heel managers of all time during her 1990s WWF run, working alongside Shawn Michaels, Ted DiBiase, and Randy Savage, among others.
Moving to World Championship Wrestling in 1994, Martel worked on top with Ric Flair during his feud with Hulk Hogan before moving on to manage The Harlem Heat tag team.
Martel was inducted into the WWF Hall of Fame in Chicago during Wrestlemania 21 weekend and still made semi-regular appearances at conventions and media events. Jakks Pacific had just released a Classic Superstars action figure in her honor.
Martel was only 49 years old.
On behalf of everyone involved with PWInsider.com, I'd like to share our deepest condolences to the family, friends, and fans of Sherri Martel. im stunned, very very sad news. Sherri Martel was an excellent talent, both a great wrestler (had many great matches in her career) and as a manager (a fantastic Heel). She always looked so healthy when seeing her on recent wwe tv and such, so this is a big surprise and shock. Rest in Peace Sherri. I cant stomach watching the continuation of the Mcmahon death angle now.
Holy Crap! This is unexpected. She was always a great heel manager and an entertianing character and she was on top form when she dealt with that heckler at the HOF last year.
What a shock. Although as you said, how WWE handle this in the wake of the Vince angle remains to be seen.
Its very sad MIB, she was talented both inside the ring and being an evil Heel Manager, one of the all time greats, she could do just about anything in front of the crowd. There will never be another Sensational Sherri.
There was serious talk within WWE yesterday regarding the McMahon angle due to the timing of the death of Sherri Martel. There was a significant push to drop the angle as quickly as possible, citing taste and timing, and another school of thought (that most expect would win out) to keep going.
Sherri Martel wrestling in the WWE is my first memory of womens wrestling, she was a fine wrestler and an even better manager, full of vampy charm.
As people have said, it shows thw whole death of Vince crap in a terrible light...the real death of a WWE great will be a footnote, whereas the b*ll**** death of Vince dominates WWE programming...the WWE does go so bloody low sometimes.
Agree with you fully Glowlad.Sherri played a massive part in the WWF's history yet they do nothing for her. When Classy freddy blassy and Mr Pefect passed on, they had a nice, fitting tribute on each show, and i rightfully so, i would also class Sherri as one of the all time greats and really deserving of more then just a small graphic. I remember when Rhonda Singh passed on, a former womens champion as bertha faye, and the WWE didnt do jack for her, which made me angry, i dont believe they had one either for Hercules Hernandez and Crash Holly, i guess the more succesful and famous personalities always count more then then the less known ones.
Apparently they didn't run tributes to Crash Holly or Hercules on TV because they felt there had been too many deaths in a short space of time at that point and felt it looked bad on the busines to keep running tributes to so many people dying at such young ages.
If they weren't running this stupid angle with vince then Sherri probably would have got a better tribute from the WWE.
Some intresting news... My hats off to you Mr.Mcmahon
According to the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Vince McMahon paid for Sherri Martel's funeral. Booker T, who she managed in WCW as Sister Sherri, sent the money to pay for a headstone for Martel's grave.
