I'm sure some of us are tempted to up sticks from our native homes and live abroad, so I figured we could discuss that here.
To start off, it's no secret some of us are fans of Japan and Japanese culture and some of us here have already been to Japan, I took tis from another forum which is the point of view from a Gaijin living over there who has experienced some hardships from the Natives. To wit:
"How does one grow to love, or even like and respect enough to be happy to remain in Japan?how can I love a country that has no laws against racism, and even upholds racist points of view? When immigrants started to go to Britain in large numbers 50 years ago they initially had a very tough time of it. But soon there were laws to protect their rights and provide some sort of moral guidance to the rest of the populace. But in a legal wasteland like Japan, the bigots get away with it, which makes the rest of population think it's just normal behaviour.
For example, many Japanese would say - "Gaijin-san, of course you... - need to always carry a gaijin card, you're a gaijin!!" - can't go into that nomiya, perhaps the landlord can't speak English!" - can't apply for an apartment, the other tennants might get worried!" - should be fingerprinted at the airport, we don't want terrorists in Japan!" - shouldn't get angry if a kid yells 'kusai gaijin' at you and their mother giggles." - should go home if you don't like our laws!" - can't have this job at this MacDonald's- you're western so the customers might be scared!" (this happened to the 17 year old daughter of an American friend... and she's perfectly fluent in Japanese.)
And it will never change until there are laws."
Now, I'm sure Totoro and GlowLad wil have something to say about that. If it matters, I don't know the nationality of the guy who wrote this (I beleive he's Greek but I cna;t be sure) but I do know of a Fillapino guy who endured lost of prejudice living in Japan before gaining full citizenship.
Are the Japanese only friendly to Westerners or just the British? Or is this an accurate and more truthful portrayal than the one we know of the Japanese?
Intresting post and such there Mib.Im not very good with such kinds of debates im afraid, but all i can say is about my experiances there and my next experiance in Japan. The first time i went to Japan,i stayed with my girlfriend in 2005,i was nervous about everything there, about how the people would feel about me espicially with living with her and about how the people would take to me when im walking out and about in Japan, naturally worried,i got there and got through fine, homesick a little but apart from that, i had no problems at all.It helped having several friends who guided me around and to introduce me to neighbours and such so i think perhaps if you have Japanese friends and people around you, then it would be far easier to be accepted in Japan.
My second trip just last year was better then the first,i again had many friends around me and travelled to many different cities with my friends.I actually went christmas shopping alone and bought several things. The good thing is the lovely female shop assistants in the stores i went to couldnt wait to help me, they would try and talk with me and assist me though they knew no english,i had an embaressing incidet one time but the women were just as embaressed as me and all apologised and said gomen nasai and arigatou politley,we all laughed and just didnt have any problems.Same in a game store as i bought a japanese video game, she couldnt speak english but was only happy to follow where i pointed, smiled and helped me, it was the same in every store i went to. I was approached several times by a group of 15 year old lads when i was playing football alone who played football with me,and they were very polite, curtious and fun, we played football for many hours and tried to talk about footie before they left me and said bye bye.I met a brazilian soccer coach and his son and Japanese wife who also treated me so nicely, so for my own experiances, i had a wonderful time not just with my friends but by myself, i met and was helped by so many wonderful Japanese people, young and old.
Did i experiance any problems? Not really, though my gfs mom was worried about me staying with her though it was more about her worrying about her daughter then me being foreign.I tried and had an interview one time with a man who was very helpful but as i didnt have a Visa,i couldnt work at his small place. Iv never had any problems there really, everyone was kind to me,helpful and polite.Noone really made fun of my Japanese and tried to assist me the best they could.I think just when i sat down in a train or i sat in a restaraunt alone, people would look, or stare towards me, but most likely because they are curious...or maybe im just simply a good looking guy ^-^ (kidding!).Iv never had any problems and i think english speakers maybe more popular because the Japanese love to learn english espicially British english these days.
Everyone i met, my girlfriends family, shop assistants, freinds, my friends friends, Joshi stars ect were wonderful and maybe in my trip soon will i maybe find out some unplesentness but i dont think i will.I have so many friends there that if i have any trouble, ill be looked after by them.iv never had many problems and living in japan is something i really cant wait to do ^_^.Sorry this is very long and poorly written, hopefully it makes a little sense.
I think there may be a distinction between working in Japan, and visiting Japan...I think to work in Japan is hard, there are long hours few holidays...plus if you work in a service industry, the emphasis is more on pleasing the xustomer than it is here...the customer/worker use different modes of Japanese to each other...casual/respectful. So, even for a non-Gaijin its hard. Japan is a very monocultural country, from what I hear, in some small villages and towns they simply stare at foreign faces...but again England was like this not so long ago. Look at the average 70's sitcom, full of racism very often...only in recent years have we truly gotvon top of the problem. Racism, whatever its form is intolerable, so that poster is rightvto report it if he feels that way. Japan isnt perfect, for example attitudes to world war 2 are worrying, and sour relations with China and Korea today.
But now the positive, I spent two weeks there and I was so happy, I saw Joshi shows, a thrill, I saw amazing museums, great works of art, fantastic parks, neon-lit wonders you could hardly imagine are real. I met many kind people, saw many beautiful women, in Tokyo, every stop of the train offered something new...Ginza, Shinjuku, Shibuya, Ueno, Akihabara, Asakusa, Roppongi...safe, clean streets, on time frequent transport...beautiful women...oh I said that already!
I urge everyone to see Japan at least once, its amazing.
Your post puts my dull effort to shame, nice stuff Glowlad ^-^.I think so to,working and just visiting to Japan is a huge difference.I think just for many Japanese, to see foreing people is something a lot of them are not used to,so they would stare and wonder.According to a lot of my friends as i mentioned, most of them are quite shy around foreingers, and some actually would like to talk to them, but are scared of their poor english.Japan is so beautiful though and is such a great place, its impossible to say anything bad about it, as you can read from my experiances above,iv only ever had truly positive things happen for me while i was there :).
hmm..I guess its natural for foreingers to be around Tokyo, Yokohama, Hokkaido and even Chiba,.But iv been to quite a few places where there isnt anyone other then myself as a foreinger, such as Ofuna,Iruma,Sagamo ect ect.I had a lot of eyes peering at me i can tell you but honestly,i dont think its a problem,my friends always say its just curiosity that japanese would look at foreingers, nothing so bad.I remember a little bit of an icident in i think it was Ikebukuro where an old man tried to steal some beer and a woman came chasing after him and took them back, and another with this girl just randomly bumping into people and looking like she was drunk as a skunk. To be honest, i kind of like the attention because iv never had people really take notice of me in my life and it feels good to be around people who like me and others who seem curious about me and try to help and talk with me :).
I would love to go to Japan at some point and it has always made me wonder what it would be like if I were to go and stay in Japan for longer than just a holiday. I don't think the whole Gaijin comments would bother me, or people staring. As Totoro101 said it would be nice to be the center of attention all the time.
But I do see the point of this, although Japan may seem so ahead of many other countries technologically, in many areas such as racism or certain sexual appetites they seem to be less advanced. Although you could look at it another way and say Japan has more freedom than we do and are not such a nanny state as we have become with the whole PC brigade telling us what we can and can't do or say.
I guess it's all down to where anyone draws the line between decent behaviour and inappropriate behaviour, and different cultures and even different groups within these cultures are always going to have different views on where to draw this line.
Im trying to psyche myself up for apply for a teaching job in Japan...I meet the minimum requirements...native English speaker and a Degree, but I don't fancy my chances of getting it.
The Japanese work ethic could be a shock to the system, and I don't want to come across as a lazy gaijin, (which I probably am!)
But the broader quality of life in Japan appeals to me, totally reliable transport system, clean street, SAFE streets.
For whatever reason, Ive sledom felt happier than in those two weeks in Japan...somehow, it felt as though I was in a place where everything fit me, unlike in England, where a trip to the local shopping centre is increasingly an ordeal!
Good luck with that Glowlad but its a pretty tough task to get work out there. What im going to do is save for a long time and i hope before im 30 i can finally get and work out there in japan if i can get a degree and such in the future.Well im off to japan in 3 days time on Friday, everything packed, bought loads of new stuff, just the waiting game now! Very nervous but hopefully itll go well the trip,im going to stay in Chiba with my friend, will be taking in 2 or 3 joshi shows with lots of pics, perhaps watching a footie game at Yokohama stadium, teaching some of the kids my friend knows soccer, and travelling up to Osaka,Hokkaido and Kyoto to see the Shrines and stuff.Going back to Studio Ghibi museum and a restaraunt with slave girls who will treat you like a king which i cant wait as the girls are dressed in very cute maids outfits! Cant wait!!

My cousin worked over there for a couple years in banking and it drained the hell out if him. Obviously it's different from teaching but they do have a strong work ethic other there and they work long hours. My cousin was sometimes called in to work at the drop of a hat - even on Xmas day. But then again, it's that efficiency and industrious attitude that makes Japan such a successfully working and evolving nation.
You are going to a maid cafe? I went in one after seeing Jonathon Ross visiting one, purely for reasearch purposes.
It felt really weird, and I kinda felt embarased for the girls having to wait on sad otaku losers like me! I quickly drank up, and left. But its worth going for the surreal experience.
Give me a full report on Kyoto, its high on my list for the next time I wanna see Japan.
Its about getting the balance right between work and play, if the Japanese just relaxed a touch more, were easier on themselves, then the place would be a Utopia...as it is, its still the best place Ive ever been.
Well, the Japanese tend to work hard and play hard too. And to be fair, there is still the old "man is the bread winner, woman looks after the home" mentality in existence so the men can work all hours and have a meal waiting for them when they get home.
Would agree with what you both said :).Im still quite nervous about the trip, very scared actually but it should be alright.Ill be staying with a friend and her mom and sister, so ill be sorrounded by cute girls ^^.The japanese people are a serious race, they dont tend to show to many emotions which when i stayed with a host family last year was quite uncomfertable as i was feeling down but they couldnt assist me as they didnt understand what was wrong with me.Again iv had many great memories of being there though, never a moment of unpleasentness, though when i was playing futsal, the coach was instucting all kinds of things but i couldnt understand what he was saying, fortunatly,he was very kind.Im quite lucky really to have a lot of good people around me. On my to do list is to...
take pictures with Joshi girls Take purikura with my friends Go to Disneyland sea Buy Japanese dvd movies Spend time with my gf eat more japanese foods Watch more Japanese Tv Do Karaoke! Visit Kyoto,Hokkaido,More of Tokyo Take in Japanese theatre ect ect
So i have a lot of plan but with only 450quid spending money i doubt ill be able to do much as i want! Ah...i cant wait!
Not a chance dark m ^^,purikura is a colourful sticker photo taking machine which usually school girls or young guys take with their friends, its very fun, and very very innocent so dont worry about that! And yep, being with my gf would be number one on my list, none of what i said was in any order of course Mib! Cant wait to go..
Karaoke is one thing I aimed to do last time but didnt manage, hopefully Ill manage it in future... I didnt see many Karaoke baras as such, but I saw plenty of those big Karaoke places where I guess you rent out private room to humiliate yourself with Karaoke, rather than public bars.
Tell you what I miss...all those vending machines...your never more than a few steps away from the next one in Japan, and a nice refreshing Pocari Sweat.
I love those vending machines as well, very very useful, theres one in every corner almost! The bad thing is though, there is many cigerrete ones as well which unfortunatly young people can access easily, but its rare to find younger people smoke in japan which is great! Karaoke looks a bundle of fun,im going to try with a couple of friends, its going to be soooo kawaii to listen to my friends sing english songs because my best friend there has a really cute accent, she cant pronnounce R's so well so she sounds adoreable when trying to say my name and such.I am thinking of going to an Onsen (hotspring) and seeing Hanabi as well, but im going to avoid sushi and seafood in japan this time because boy it made my bowels really really bad..
Im a Veggie so Sushi etc are off the menu for me anyway.
About vending machines, say you bought a can of coke from one, where do you drink it? Its just I heard eating and drinking in the street are very much frowned on in Japan so I was alwasy wary of taking a quick slurp of coke in the street. But its odd to have so many vending machines and not expect people to drink!
I actually never knew that myself Glowlad,i just happily drink while i walk in the street! Obiviously being foreingers,im sure noone really cares to much, and iv seen many others drink in the street to so i assume its not really any problem!
GlowLad is correct - the Japanese don't like people to drink while walking in the street. Stopping at a nearby bench is fine as is going to a park where such restrictions are removed. But drinking freely from a bottle or a can like we do is frowned upon. It's not prohibited but is considered bad manners.
I'd have a problem out there as I have a dehydration problem and thus have to have a bottle of water with me at all times, and of course it is worse in the summer.
Sorrytto hear that Mib,actually i have a very similar problem, i NEED to drink often, so i always have to have a bottle with me no matter where i go.I never had any problems with drinking in public before though there,i never actually knew that so i think ill not do that when im in japan this time then, i dont want to be seen as rude or something like that!
Hey if you are discreet like turn your back when drinking or step into a doorway or behind a lamp post then you should be fine. Just drinking in front of people is considered rude.
And stop copying my symptoms. How can I wallow in self pity if there is someone else the same as me?
To late for that Mib,i did it all the time when i was there before ^^.Noone told me about it,not even my japanese friends so i didnt think! And seriously,im exactely the same with the drinking,i need lots and lots of that to ^^,honest!
Well I consulted my father about it from when he was out there but that was 10 years ago so maybe they've grown to tolerate it a bit more since then. But if you get some weird looks from some of the other natives then at least you will know why now.
Thanks for the Mib ^^.Well just today and ill be off tomorrow morning from 1pm! wish me luck! Very very nervous but it should be a fine trip. Will write on the forums on the weekend ^^ though ill probably be sleeping the whole of the saturday day i arrive there.Cant wait!
absoloutley shattered, just got to japan the other morning and completley spent, my whole body is in pain from that darn flight.Still its great to be back here and with my friends so its been enjoyable! I actually spotted Bez from the happy mondays or whatever its called and big brother fame at the airport and shook hands with the guy, really nice fellow.Japanese life is so different from england, espicially the summer, its scorching hot at the moment! Oh well, sure ill adapt anyway for the time im here.
thanks mib, im spending a lot of time in bed though sadly, really really tired still.I hate using the toilets on the plane so i refused to eat anything or drink anything for the entire flight, naturally now because of it,i have quite some problems down below! Silly me.Went to famous japanese history museum the other day, saw and learnt quite a bit there, went shopping to and saw some pretty cool asian movies so while resting iv done a little bit as well.
They say the best way to handle the jet lag when crossing another time zone is to try and stay awake until your usual bed time in your own time zone then crash out and you should be right as rain the next morning.
tried that mib but im still utterly exhausted! I wont be getting over the jetlag for a while! Well another update,if its ok to talk about here, today i went to a very cool shopping center with my friend Chie who is a darling (will post her and my pics up probably in a few weeks amongst others) and while shopping i bought several totoro things from a big porceline stature,to a small glass totoro and Laputa figure, pretty cool and cheap to. Also bought a japanese film which was released recently but i dont know its name. going to go rest now, almost 6pm in the afternoon here. Lots to do, but im going bankrupt after just 3 days! I really need to becareful now..Also saw a poster up for the 2007 film version of Monkey, i will be watching this for sure here, cant wait and the girl who plays tripitaka is spot on,the others..well none of them capture the characters quite the same but it looks awesome.
thanks for that Dark m, nice of you to retitle the topic to ^^! Currently just resting now, spent the evening watching some kind of japanese comedy tournement which was pretty weird, one guy being decked out as Antonio Inoki in those high waisted black trunks and making his jaw just perfeclty as that weird jaw of his, very funny, but he was quickly pulled off stage thanks to the revolving floor which sent him flying! going to watch tales from earthsea now so cant wait!
sorry to double post, just been so busy here recently no time to do much else. Today met 4 of my good girl friends, went to karaoke and stayed quiet because im absoloutley shy..no chance for me singing, took lots of purikura and eat sushi. Quite nice but have an upset belly. now im going to rest more and relax, went shoping to.Took a tour of some samurai houses here in Sakura chi, absoloutley beautiful things they are, old japanese kitchens, old japanese samurai armour, ect ect, stunning stuff.
phew absoloutley knackered. Have walked and walked and walked non stop for the past 3 days! Well Firstly, thanks mib, secondly about the wrestling scene and mma stuff Dark M, i dont know to much whats going on there sadly, though there is some cool k-1 shows on at night which i try to watch but i dont tend on watchin mma so its not my kind of thing. The Chris benoit story..well iv seen a few magazines and newspapers which has some things about it and its quite a big thing in some of them but i dont understand a word! Ah i wish i knew japanese.Mostly iv been to a joshi show anyway which ill talk about in the joshi section of sports (absoloutely fun and i met my wife yuki!!! Wooow!).
Thank you nymvette, my belly still a bt painful but im fine now hehe. Its absoloutley amazing here, i spent last night watching hanabi, the firworks are incredible and we had a huge dinner at japanese restaraunt eatin okonimiyaki, pizza, sake (i drunk coke but my friends drunk and got a little plastered so i had to take care of them as i dont drink!) and wen around the local town, played football with some japanese guys which was cool to and saw joshi. knackered!!
it's good to hear that you're having a good time, and if you're tired then it means that you're Pushing it to the limit, as every good englishman should lol.
Its great out here sympth! Im not doing much recently though, other then relaxing and stuff as im almost broke in the space of one week...still ill get some more money soon i hope! Its SCORCHING hot in japan right now, my face is browner then its ever been and even when i sleep, i sweat buckets. I hate this weather man..I must have drunk 100 cherry cokes in the last one week alone, im not even kidding. Tomorrow im going to Akihabara, the place where the otaku love. Cant wait to go there. Also going try buy Koda Kumis new album and a giant hello kitty doll for my sister. Lots to do.
arigatou mib, i guess i have a thing for koda kumi! Recently not up to much, just looking to book a trip to a joshi show next 2 weeks and a NOAH show as well if possible, got some more money finally so that was cool.Funny thing happend yesterday night as i was walking with a friend through the streets of beautiful Ikebukuro when i was stopped by some cute japanese girls and we had our pics taken together, honto kawaii!! When im back in england will post some pics but cant here at moment. Played my new wii with my friends and it was good fun.Today iv been to laz,y just going to convinece store and such, trying to learn japanese here as well so always keeping busy and the food is fantastic. Im already planning for my 2008 trip here! Im drinking far to much though, must have gone 100 bottles of all kinds of pop and fruit juice in the last one week. Going to meet some more friends tonight, all gorgeous and all coming back with me to the UK ^^ so lucky me!
Ah what i mean is a few of my friends will be coming back to england with me when i return so im pretty pleased! I never drink sake though iv had to buy a few for my family which they apprechiate as my parents love their alchohol but its really expensive.I forgot to mention but i got to see the Movie of MONKEY in its 2007 remake.A really good film but you just cant ever replace the original 4 characters, and the cgi effects where pretty awesome but i prefer the cheesy effects frm the original series, still it was good fun, nice to see that monkey is still very popular over here in japan, but pigsy is pretty bad in the movie imo, he just doesnt do much at al in the film.Im sure itll find its way to the Uk in the future.
Well as all my posts on these forums can tell, i dont have much to do, a lazy day i guess! Its blazing hot so i have no energy.Watched a brilliant comedy show on japan last night, japanese tv is always full of colour, fun and enjoyment, so its fantastic here, one with which takeshi kitano was playing a judge and doing all kinds of things to other people.Eat sushi rice and ramen noodles, and some rice cakes and basically thats all until i came on here!
