The excitement is almost palpable! Twentieth Century Fox has announced that Gavin Hood is set to direct the upcoming Wolverine solo movie!
Hood is most known for his film, "Totsi," which won the Academy Award for best foreign film in 2005. Hood's newest film, "Rendition," starring Reese Witherspoon and Jake Gyllenhaal, opens October 12.
"Wolverine," with Hugh Jackman reprising his role as Logan from the legendary "X-Men" films, will feature a screenplay by the talented scribe David Benioff ("25th Hour" and "Troy"), and will purportedly follow Marvel's Canucklehead through his mysterious origins and early exploits.
"Wolverine," which is slated for a 2008 release, is scheduled to begin production in November.
Wolverine is the best for me,absoloutley love the guy! This movie should be quite cool.Would love to see Gambit as well actually but its not likely unless there is an Xmen 4.
Well the new Wolverine Movie has a title and a release date now (From Marvel.com)
May is officially awesome month for Marvel movies. From "X2" in '03 and "Spider-Man 3" in '07 to 2008's "Iron Man," there's no doubt that Marvel and May make a solid team. And now we can chalk another surefire success to the list when "X-Men Origins: Wolverine" slashes its way into theaters May 1, 2009!
Reprising his role as Wolverine from the "X-Men" movies, Hugh Jackman stars in the blockbuster which, according to VARIETY, could feature a young William Stryker, Sabretooth, Weapon X and a bevy of other mutantsboth returning and new characters.
Additional cast members haven't been announced yet, but joining Jackman are director Gavin Hood ("Tsotsi") and writer David Benioff ("The Kite Runner"). With filming tentatively scheduled to begin by the end of 2007, look for more "X-Men Origins: Wolverine" news and announcements here on Marvel.com.
Well if it is the origins of wolverine, it will have to have his old crew up in Canada, so does that mean they all have to have dodgy Canadian accents? hmmm.....
From AICN, some rather excellent news for the fanboys at least...
AICN EXCLUSIVE! Want To Know Whos Making A Special Appearance In WOLVERINE?!
Hey, everyone. Moriarty here.
Sounds to me like Marvel is going to pack this one with all sorts of geeky Easter eggs if all of these rumors are true. The Blob would be a lot of fun to see in one of these, and theres another cameo, one that we can officially confirm now, that sounds to me like a set-up for a possible spin-off.
Anyone up for a little DEADPOOL? CHUD.COM reported at the start of December that the character would show up in the film.
Well, today we can exclusively ask you... how about if Ryan Reynolds is playing him?
This ones supposed to be a secret, but cats out of the bag now, Marvel. And I have to say... I think it sounds like fun. I know this has been a character you guys have been developing for years now (hell, I think I pitched a DEADPOOL film back in 2001), and Reynolds is absolutely the right guy for the job.
In case you don't know who DeadPool is here is some infor from Wiki:
Deadpool is a fictional comic book character sometimes depicted as a mercenary, villain, or anti-hero; who appears in books published by Marvel Comics, usually in the X-Men family of titles. Created by artist Rob Liefeld and writer Fabian Nicieza, Deadpool first appeared in The New Mutants #98 (February 1991).
Nicknamed the "Merc with a Mouth", Deadpool is a high-tech mercenary known for his wisecracks, black humor, and satirical pop-culture references. Like the X-Men's Wolverine, Deadpool is the product of the Canadian government's paramilitary Weapon X program, although his place of birth is unknown. After Weapon X cured his terminal cancer by implementing a regenerative "healing factor" extracted from Wolverine, Deadpool is left disfigured and mentally unstable.
Deadpool was originally an adversary of The New Mutants and later X-Force, developing an infatuation with X-Force member Siryn. Deadpool received two limited series: Sins of the Past and The Circle Chase. He graduated to an ongoing series in 1997, which was known for its slapstick tone and willingness to break the fourth wall. Deadpool's series was cancelled but he reappeared as part of Agent X in 2002 but that series was cancelled in 2003. Currently, Deadpool is paired with Cable, another former X-Force character, in Cable & Deadpool. He is scheduled to appear in a new solo title in late 2008.
Twentieth Century Fox has added three more superheroes to "X-Men Origins: Wolverine," with Ryan Reynolds set to play Deadpool, "Friday Night Lights" regular Taylor Kitsch to star as Gambit and hip-hop artist will.i.am joining the cast as John Wraith. Liev Schreiber, Danny Huston and Lynn Collins round out the cast as Victor Creed/Sabretooth, Col. William Stryker and Kayla Silver Fox, respectively.
Hugh Jackman reprises the role of Wolverine in the "X-Men" spinoff that Gavin Hood is lensing in New Zealand, Australia and New Orleans. Pic bows May 1, 2009.
David Benioff penned the script, which would reveal the origins of the Wolverine character and introduce other mutants not yet seen in the "X-Men" franchise.
Marvel has been eyeing the possibility of casting Reynolds as Deadpool, an assassin with self-healing powers, for some time with the idea of spinning off the character into his own film series should the character prove popular among moviegoers.
Fox and Marvel have also long wanted to add the card-throwing character of Gambit to the "X-Men" franchise but could never find a way to give him enough screen time among the many other mutants that have appeared in each film.
Black Eyed Peas frontman will.i.am will play Wraith, a mutant who has the power to teleport, and is another test subject of the Weapon X program that created Wolverine and other mercenaries. It would be his first film role.
Lauren Shuler Donner and Ralph Winter are producing with Jackman and his Seed Prods. producing partner John Palermo. Marvel's Kevin Feige exec produces.
Looks like Fox are about to stuff up another film according to Filmstalker:
Fox don't have a great reputation of letting their talent develop their projects, and it looks like Wolverine is the next to be suffering from their interfering executives with an eye to produce a teenage friendly film.
Word is that the director, Gavin Hood, who is trying to make a darker Wolverine film in keeping with the original story, was almost fired by Fox, probably because he stood his ground and wouldn't turn it into a kiddie film.
Apparently it became so bad that two backup directors were put in place by Fox and they were ready to pull Gavin Hood from X-Men Origins: Wolverine. However Variety (no link given) through Comic Book Movie tell us that Richard Donner stepped in to try and smooth things over between Fox and Hood.
Fox are on the defensive yet again though, they're saying it's Hood's film, they aren't interfering, and he's definitely the director. However we've heard that before from studio's that are interfering like mad.
This isn't the only high profile director in trouble with the overly interfering Fox, remember Mathieu Kassovitz has slated his own Fox film Babylon A.D., Alex Proyas is adamant that he won't work with Fox ever again after the mess of I, Robot, and Fox are planning to ruin every superhero fan's dreams as they want to stop Warner Bros. Watchmen film from being released, unless they get tons of cash.
Most studios do a great job of hiding their accountancy and business like ways and go so far as letting their creative people make the film they want, after all they hired the creative talent for what they can do with films, not for doing what they want and ticking all the boxes on their accountancy based checklist.
Yes I know studios are all about making money, but do they really do that by churning out tame films that don't meet fans expectations? Well perhaps they make enough money, but if they did it right they could make so much more, and the fans could get what they want.
Meanwhile the article says that Fox are intending more X-Men spin off's remember that Magneto is already on the slate there's word of a young X-Men spin off, surely something made purely to appease the young audience, a Deadpool film, and a possible Daredevil film.
It all sounds good, but what they probably have planned right now is hiring a great writer and director and forcing them into an impossible situation to deliver what they want in a film, a young persons film more in the vein of Fantastic Four than Dark Knight, a very bad choice in my mind, particularly for the characters they've chosen Wolverine, Magneto and Deadpool should definitely not be light, child friendly films.
