Well nothing has been officially announced but this is looking likely...
With a win over Antoni Hardonk last month at UFC 74, one-time UFC heavyweight champion Frank Mir (10-3 MMA, 8-3 UFC) will reportedly get a step up in competition and face Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira (30-4-1 MMA, 1-0 UFC) in his next fight.
TAGG Radio, a daily MMA Internet show hosted by Frank Trigg, made the announcement on todays program, reports MMAjunkie.com contributor and fiveouncesofpain.com editor Sam Caplan.
No date for the fight was given, though a Dec. 29 UFC 79 event in Las Vegas has long been rumored as a possibility for Nogueiras return to the Octagon.
Nogueira, a former PRIDE champion and top-ranked heavyweight contender, made his UFC debut back in July at UFC 73. Facing Heath Herring, Nogueira suffered a head kick that floored the Brazilian fighter. Inexplicably, Herring allowed his opponent to return to his feet and regain his composure, and Nogueira rebounded for a unanimous-decision victory.
The submission specialist was considered an immediate contender when he signed on with the UFC earlier this year, and it stands to reason that if he does indeed take on Mir and pull out a victory, he could be a line for a title shot in mid-2008.
His reported opponent Mir was seriously injured in a motorcycle accident three months after winning the UFCâs heavyweight belt in 2004. He broke his femur bone in two places and tore numerous tendons in and around his knee when a car T-boned him. Mir didnât fight for 16 months while he nursed his injuries, and his return to the Octagon has been a mixed bag thus far.
He returned to action in February 2006 and suffered a TKO loss to Marcio Cruz. In his next bout, he had gained noticeable weight and won a sluggish and lackluster unanimous decision over Dan Christison at UFC 61. He suffered a quick first-round TKO loss to Brandon Vera at UFC 65 but defeated Hardonk with a quick submission last month.
In an emotional post-fight interview, Mir said he had his priorities in order and was looking forward to regaining his championship form.
Mir Vs. Big Nog? If Mir is back as he says he is, it could be an intresting matchup, otherwise it could be the last we see of Mr.Mir. I have to say though I'd still rather see Mir Vs. Arlovski.
Well, this event is set to have Matt'The Terra'Serra Vs. Matt Hughes for the Welterweight Championship.
Also rumoured are Chuck Liddell Vs. Marcilo 'Shogun' Rua, Forrest Griffin Vs. Wanderlei Silva. If that's all true then that could be a very very good card.
That line up almost make s me want to take a short holiday to the US. Forrest was amazing aginst Rua, thoroughly deserved to beat him. If he goes about that match against Silva, then he could find himself in line for a title shot sometime next year.
Some latest news, due to his surgery matt Hammill couldn't do UFC 78, but he is saying that he can do this event so we could be having Matt Hammill vs. Mike Bisping II as well. Seriously this is turning, possibly into an amazing end of year event.

Matt Hughes and Matt Serra did an awesome job as coaches on The Ultimate Fighter and now they are set to fight for Serras UFC Welterweight World Championship, said Dana White, UFC President. Serra wants to hold on to his title and Hughes wants it back. The show left little doubt about the dislike these two have for each other, and I think this is going to be an explosive fight.

Current UFC welterweight champion Matt Serra (16-4) is proof that The Ultimate Fighter not only produces top contenders in the UFC, it produces champions. The winner of The Ultimate Fighter Season 4, Serra plowed his way through the reality show to win a comeback shot for the 170-pound title against then champion Georges St-Pierre. In what turned out to be an upset win of epic proportions for Serra, the Long Island native overwhelmed Rush with a barrage of strikes and stopped him cold at 3:25 of the first round. Now Serra looks to defend his title against the legendary Hughes and secure his own legacy in the UFC 170-pound division.
I think this is going to be a tough fight. As a person, I cant stand Matt Hughes, I dont like him at all, but I respect him as a fighter, said Serra. You cant deny what he has accomplished as a fighter, but he basically thinks my last fight was a fluke, like I dont belong in there with him. I believe theres one way Matt Hughes can beat me, but I can beat him several different ways, and I plan on beating him on all fronts.
Hughes (43-5), a two-time UFC champion with seven combined title defenses to his name, has a deadly ground game that has earned him wins over St-Pierre, BJ Penn, Chris Lytle, Royce Gracie, and Frank Trigg (twice). After giving up his title to St-Pierre at UFC 65, Hughes returned to the Octagon at UFC 68 in March to take on The Ultimate Fighter Season 4 finalist Chris Lytle. He won via unanimous decision, and ever since then, he has waited for the opportunity to fight for the title and he wants to prove that he is not only the best 170-pounder in the division today, but that he is the greatest 170-pound fighter ever to fight in the UFC.
To me, Serra is just another opponent, said Hughes. Hes just another guy that likes to run his mouth. I think nine out of 10 times he loses to GSP, so Serra did get lucky once, maybe. I think I have a lot more ways to win this fight than he does I just need to watch out for those looping punches.

-Matt Serra vs. Matt Hughes -Chuck Liddell vs. Wanderlei Silva -Dean Lister vs. Jordan Radev -Rich Clementi vs. Melvin Guillard -Roan Carneiro vs. TBA -Doug Evans vs. TBA
Finally CHuck Vs. Wanderlei is happening and this morning it seems some sources are reporting that Dan Henderson is going to drop down to 185 and be fighting on the card. More news as it becomes official.
Wow, that looks to be a cracking Card. As specially looking forward to the Serra - Hughes bout (Who knows maybe this'll lead to a member of team Hughes finally going over a member of team Serra lol) but I think it'll be good, they seem to have quite strong feelings for eachother but I hope Hughes takes the belt from Serra.
I'm interesting in seeing Wandy Vs Lydell aren't they both coming back from losses?
They are both coming back from 2 back to back losses. Should be intresting. From a UFC point they need Wandy to win. He's new and they are building him up to be some kind of killer (Or should that be Axe Murderer?). But then thier most bankable star in Chuck gets his 3rd loss and he could potentially leave the UFC.

UFC President Dana White announced Thursday Related News that Matt Serra will have to withdraw from the UFC 79 card due to an injury he suffered after his training earlier this week.
The current UFC welterweight champion, who was scheduled to fight Matt Hughes at UFC 79, suffered a herniated disc in his lower back on Monday following a routine training session in his Long Island gym. This is devastating news because they were so looking forward to fighting each other, said White.
Unfortunately injuries happen and I look forward to Serra recovering quickly, and to getting him back into the Octagon.
Serra had just finished a Jiu-Jitsu and wrestling training session and was demonstrating a move when he became gripped with pain and fell to the floor. Serra went to the hospital and underwent an MRI, which revealed the herniated discs in his lower back.
This is the hardest thing Ive ever had to do, said Serra. Ive never had a back injury before; I could hardly get off of the MRI table. There is no way I can train through this, and Im devastated, especially because this was such an important fight. I was looking forward to fighting Matt Hughes. All my training was going phenomenally until Monday All I can do now is to get better and to fight again as soon as possible. At least now Wandy/Liddell can get the proper Main Event status it deserves.
Yeah, but does Matt Hughes still fight? Why don't they throw someone like Koscheck or Fitch in there with him? I know that Hughes wants to fight for the title, but I would be just as excited about Hughes/Kos or Hughes/Fitch as I was about Serra/Hughes. Doubt it will happen though.
As far as injuries, I think that this could be the end of Matt Serra's title reign. Look at what happened to GSP. He was supposed to fight Serra in January (on the same card as Silva/Lutter), but the fight didn't happen until April. GSP seemed to have been seriously affected in that match, because he lost in less than a minute. I think the injury had something to do with it.

Depends if he's rushed back or if he is allowed time to heal. The problem is the Welterweight div has been held up by TUF 6 so who knows. I don't think they will want Hughes to fight either. What if he loses where does that leave the title fight? Also, Hughes has said he only has a few fights left in him so he's going to pick and choose. Also, Dana may or may not have lost Coture, Liddell loses to Wandy he's lost another bankable star. Franklin can't beat Anderson Silva so he needs to keep one major face in there.
Well the UFC have made it official. Hughes will now fight GSP for the Interim Welterweight Championship. There are some saying that becasue of his injury Serra may even have to retire. But still hughes GSP III is going to be brilliant. Hughes is going to get pasted by GSP
I hope Serra doesn't have to retire. I think he's a cocky bastard but the people need a Serra - Hughes match. it would be the match Dreams are made of if Hughes wins the intrim and goes on to fight Serra to unify the belt.
It'll be a giant build up but it would be a huge money match. A guranteed large payday for both fighters I'm sure :)
With Serra out though where does this leave the coaching staff for TUF?
OK, my view on the Hughes/GSP fight. I think that it's a win-win for the UFC, but not necessarily for the fans. Fans really got excited about seeing the Hughes/Serra fight, and that may not happen now. If GSP wins, then we will get a GSP/Serra fight. If Hughes wins, then we will get the fight that we wanted. But there is no way that Hughes wins this one. GSP is at the top of his game, and he's my top pound for pound fighter in the world.
I think that this leaves the WW division in peril. The fact that there are so many guys at the top makes it hard to have good fights. The UFC does not want to eliminate contenders by matching top fighters (unless it's a title match), but I think that we may have to see some of the top guys at 170 fight. Guys like Fitch, Kos, Karo, Davis, and Burkman need to start facing off.
As far as the State of the UFC goes, this is bad news for them. After January, we will have two interim champions (WW and LW), and we could even have another interim champ at HW depending on what Randy decides to do. This leaves Rampage and Silva as the only legit champs. 2 out of 5? That's 40%...

Just over a week away. Can't say the UFC have really been pushing this either. Potentially one of the biggest match ups of recent years in Liddell/Silva but its just sort of creeping up..
I agree DM. I saw more TV promos for the last event than I have seen for this one. Maybe they are waiting to get the big push at the last minute for Christmas week. There are usually more people watching TV in those days between Christmas and New Year's.

Liddell came back with a bang there. It looked to me like the Axe murderer neer really got out of the blocks after Chuck opened that cut.
GSP is looking more and more dangerous although I have to say that Matt Hughes is starting to look past it. I have a feeling Serra would have torn through him too. I'll be intrested to see the GSP/Serra rematch, but I have a feeling that Serra could be GSPs Kryptonite.
