I just got Solid State Society today and am expecting SAC gig 1 tomorrow what I'm wondering is do I need to see all of SAC to fully understand SSS? May have to watch GITS and Innocence first as it's been a while since I watched them.
A fundamental knowledge of the SAC series does help as Solid State Society does make the occasional reference to some of the former episodes. Also some of the characters have moved on from the two series so in many ways you are catching things some way down the line.
That said it is not entirely impossible to watch and enjoy SSS without seeing the two SAC series first. As long as you are familiar with the characters and the basic premise of GITS you should be able to watch it before the others.
But I would recommend watching a few episodes of SAC on Anime Central to get an idea of what's what.
And don't forget to check out my review of SSS on the CPC Website.
It's worth watching SAC anyway as it is such a good series. I am watching it on Anime Central, I've missed a few episodes becuase of recording problems but the way each epiosde can be watched as an individual episode as weel as part of an overall story is really cool.
I suppose it's a bit like Star Trek, you can watch every episode and there is a underlying story behind it all, but also each episode can be watched as its own stand alone story, hence the Stand alone complex name?
The "Stand Alone Complex" was actually to separate the TV series from the original GITS film but you are right in that some of the episodes are self contained, although the Laughing Man thread does often take up a lot of the series.
I think it may have been the last episode of the first series on last night as lots happened. Without spoiling the story they finally caugh up with the laughing man.
I got very lost during the discussion between the major and the laughing man, but in their discussion they concluded that a certain effect on them was the "Stand Alone Complex"
I am keeping my fingers crossed for it at Christmas. I think I managed to catch up all the episodes from SAC1 I missed the first time round but it's one I would watch again and again as each time I understand it a bit more.
Well I just watched the latest show of Ghost in the Shell SAC2 from last night. It must be the 3rd or 4th episode of the series and it was very good. The major looked great, it was a little naughty with sex dolls and was a very interesting story too.
Spoiler
I am also very happy the tachikomas are back as they are so funny and nice.
Anyone got any images from SAC2 I could used in a signature?
As I have now finished watching FMA I thought I'd switch back to Ghost in the Shell again.
I am after a picture of the Major in the dress from the episode I mentioned above or any other cool picture of her. Also maybe a tachikoma for my avatar.
Watched an episode of SAC2 where the major rescues a young boy and takes him back to her hotel, where she has a shower and walks out talking to him in only her panties and a towel just covering her breasts. She then gets in bed with the boy to go to sleep but before they do the boy asks if you can still have sex with a full prosthetic body (because he wants one) and the major rolls over and looks at him and asks if he would like to find out. He says maybe another time.
I guess I shouldn't be surprised as it is japanese anime after all. I have now seen so much of Ghost in the Shell and it is suggestive and shows alot of flesh but I just wasn't expecting that from the Major.
Well SAC 2nd Gig has now finished on Anime Central. I didn't think it could get anymore confusing after the first series but it managed it. I think I need to watch the series all over again just to understand what happened.
I can't watch Anime Central anymore. For some reason the picture just freezes up. It's not just that channel either, it's a lot of the music channels too. However all the other channels are fine and even though I've reset my Digibox, those channels still won't run properly.
Have now watched Solid State Society too, just as confusing as the series were. My conclusion is I really enjoyed watching it and will now be watching 1st and 2nd Gig again to get a better understanding of the underlying parts of the story and to pick up on bits I may have missed before.
I loved the artwork as usual, the attention to detail is just amazing.
It's probably best to watch them in the original Japanese as so much gets lost in translation when they dub the shows.
As I said in my review, the SAC film is the most accessible of the three so far.
Also, in the latest NEO they announced that a Manga are releasing two OVA DVDs which are basically the two SAC series edited down to include just the Laughing Man story arc from the first Gig and the Individual Eleven arc from the second Gig.
