There are some very, very interesting rumours about a possible Justice League movie. As far as I know, there are no details on the league line-up or cast yet, except that both Christian Bale and Brandon Routh have both either declined, or have not been offered, the roles of Batman and Superman ( although both have contract options for the touted Batman-Superman movie ). Anyone with any thoughts of what line-up they should use, and of who should be cast??

I personally would like to see them use the Jusice League Unlimited founders line up with a more mature cast in a story line with some teeth. Any other line up would either not have the established characters necessary to make the film work, or would be too male heavy ( too much testosterone ). As most of these characters are so well known, hopefully they'll not have to get bogged down in lengthy background explanations ( which would kill the movie considering there's seven to cover )!

Batman - Michael Keaton, George Clooney or possibly Russell Crowe.

Superman - Nick Cage or John Cusack.

Wonder Woman - Terry Farrell or Sigourney Weaver ( although I don't think she'd look too hot in the cozzie ).

Green Lantern - If they're using the John Stewart incarnation, then Samuel L. Jackson ( the only, really sensible choice ) or, at a pinch, Avery Brookes.

The Flash - Difficult character to cast if you're using the Wally West incarnation, as he's a joker, and always has a funny line to throw at the bad guys. Really, I think the role would do better going to a comedian, possibly ( a very toned down ) Jim Carey, or Dane Cook.

Hawkgirl - Nana Visitor ( Kira Nerys in ST:DS9 ) She's feisty, and looks perfect for the role. Plus she would look hot in the costume ( Did you see the alternate universe episodes?? Need I say more !?! )

J'onn J'onzz, The Martian Manhunter - Another hard role to cast is this one! You have to have an actor with enough dignity to carry the character, but also buff enough to go hand-to-hand with the bad guys. Ron Perlmam ( Hellboy ) perhaps.

First refusals went to Christian Bale, Brandon Routh for Batman and Superman respectively. They both declined. Tom whatever his face from Smallville is now in line for Supes it seems.

Ryan Reynolds should be the Flash... Green lantern hmmm How about te guy from Oceans 11, 12 & 13 whose name escapes me right now.

I agree Ryan Reynolds should be the flash, that would make the movie even more awsome, apart from the dude from smallville, that would bring it down a notch :(

I'd love to google Terry Farrell smile.gif I have to admit on reflection that Sigourny Weaver was not a good choice. How about Jennifer Connell?

Oh,dear! Oh,dear! Oh,dear! They've started casting unknowns for this... and two of the key roles too. This is rapidly turning into the 2nd worst realised comic book film of all time, after The Watchmen that is.

JLA is off now.  News from Variety.

Justice League" is no longer moving faster than a speeding bullet.

Warner Bros. let the options lapse on the young cast that director George Miller chose to play DC superhero staples. The studio, which had set Tuesday as its greenlight deadline for the pic, confirmed Wednesday the project is on indefinite hold.

Project now most likely won't get under way until late summer or fall at the earliest.

Cast members were informed late Tuesday their options would not be exercised, but they were also assured the studio is determined to make the film with them in it. But before that can happen, there are several problems to be resolved.

The studio's reasons included not getting the official response it needed on tax breaks from shooting in Australia. And while WB execs like the script they got from Kieran and Michele Mulroney, it would benefit from a little more work, something that isn't possible because of the writers' strike.

Some were surprised the studio didn't exercise cast options anyway. The deals gave WB the flexibility to exercise the deals immediately, or in July, and the actors will be making salaries in the low six-figure range. While Adam Brody, cast as the Flash, has a track record, most of the cast comprises such newcomers as Armie Hammer Jr., who plays Batman, and Megan Gale, who will play Wonder Woman.

The studio risks losing them to other film jobs. But it is likely most if not all the cast will make sure to be available starting late summer and fall, just in case. That's because of the starmaking potential of "Justice League."

Studio had set this week as the deadline to greenlight the superhero tentpole, which it was racing to get into production for 2009 release. That was always considered a dicey proposition, particularly when the writers went on strike, and because the film needs to be completed before the SAG deal expires in June.

With "Justice League" on indefinite hold, the studio has a superhero gap on its 2009 slate; status of the next "Superman" pic is also uncertain.

A bit gutting that but when all said and done, if they're determined to make this film with a bunch of unknowns, then it's probably better it has died before it ever got into full production.

Update from Filmstalker:

Warner Bros. and DC Comics have been talking about their plans for film versions of their comic book characters. With The Dark Knight breaking box office records, and Watchmen looking amazing so far, Warners and DC are planning changes for the better.

With Marvel making solid films from their characters, it seems DC are taking things slowly. But from what they say, they want to make sure they get it right.

Variety spoke to Alan Horn from Warner Bros about the roster of characters DC has, and he said this:

'They can really be an evergreen source of enjoyment and income. If you do it wrong, you're dead, you're out of there.'

Hmm, could he be talking about Catwoman? It must be frustrating for DC Comics fans. Marvel has had Iron Man and The Incredible Hulk out this year. With a sequel in the works for Iron Man, not to mention films for Thor, Captain America and an Avengers film. DC Comics films have relied on Christopher Nolan's Batman films and Superman, but even a sequel for Superman seems to be inching along.

DC have loads in the pipeline but not much concrete happening, Wonder Woman, The Flash, Green Arrow and Green Lantern have all been rumoured, with Green Lantern getting the go ahead recently. Horn says that Warner and DC Comics are committed to turning:

'The properties into viable movie product in an intelligent way so that we introduce them like planes on a runway. They have to be set up the right way and lined up the right way and all take off one at a time and fly safe and fly straight.'

It looks like DC are planning on upping their game even more. Horn also says that they have made an offer to Christopher Nolan for the next Batman film. They haven't had any discussions with him yet though.

When it comes to the Justice League of America film, they seem to be admitting making some initial mistakes, but they aren't giving up on the idea. Jeff Robinov, says they are committed to getting it right.

'We're not off the notion of a Justice League. There's a massive interest and knowledge in the comicbook industry and it takes time to sort of catch up and understand the characters and the history, where they've intersected with each other and what their worlds are. That's part of the education that we're going through.'

It's reassuring I suppose that they seem to be taking stock, and not planning on rushing films out. Maybe the changes will see DC Comics characters in some great films. They definitely have a great flagship in Batman at the minute, and it would appear they don't want a Justice League film to dilute that. Gregory Noveck, senior VP of creative affairs for DC Comics, is of the opinion that a Justice League film will not be made unless it can be done right.

'These are big, iconic characters. So when you make them into a movie, you'd better be shooting for a pretty high standard. You're not always going to reach it, but you have to be shooting for it. We're going to make a Justice League movie, whether it's now or 10 years from now. But we're not going to do it and Warners is not going to do it until we know it's right.'

So DC may become serious competition for Marvel in the movie making business. If The Dark Knight and hopefully Watchmen are anything to go by, they could be well on their way. There should be more details of the planned changes soon. Let's hope they get it right.
