Production on the fourth instalment in the Terminator film series will begin next year ahead of a 2009 release.
Terminator Salvation: The Future Begins will be the first in a proposed trilogy of films reinventing the cyborg saga.

Derek Anderson, of production company Halycon, has told industry newspaper Variety the film will be "set in the future" during "a full-scale war".

The Terminator brand is currently being revived on US television with the Sarah Connor Chronicles series.

Lena Headey stars in the title role, previously played by Linda Hamilton in the first two Terminator films directed by James Cameron.

'Fresh new world'

Former actor Arnold Schwarzenegger, now governor of California, last played the series' robotic protagonist in Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines.

According to Variety, however, it is unclear whether he will appear in the new film.

"We've left it open for him to maybe do a cameo," said producer Moritz Borman. "The final decision will be based on his desire and availability."

Warner Brothers have acquired North American distribution rights to the fourth Terminator film, which it plans to release in summer 2009.

"The intention is to present a fresh new world and have this be the first of a trilogy," said Borman.

Let's hope it's a decent Sci Fi battle movie

Has anyone actually watched the new Terminator t.v show? or even Virgin 1 to think about it?

The Terminator films do own though. it's one of those rare franchises where the sequel is better than the original. I watched T2 when it first came out, it was blooming mint and probably one of the main reasons I'm desencitised to most violence in film and t.v nowadays lol

The show doesn't start in the US till January as it's a mid-season show meaning we probably won't get it till February. I have to say, if done well, it could be amazing but as it's on network TV, the chance of it fulfilling its potential is slim to none.

The TV show looks ok (nothing special from what ive seen). Now the movie, personally i think they may be flogging a dead terminator here, unless they pull a rabbit out of the hat in the cinema's then it wont go well, I dont think T3 went as well as it probably should have done, as it was an ok action flick, but it was obvious at the end of 3 there would be more, even though at the time they said no more, but hey, thats movie studios, lol

With the stupid title entact here's some more details about it:

Terminator with a side of Christian Bale sounds like a good mix to me. Actually, anything with a side of Christian Bale sounds good to me! Story details of the latest Terminator film have been revealed online!

Devin over at Chud.com posted a few story details from Terminator 4 today. Apparently, he knows a lot more but doesn't want to spoil us completely. Chinese water torture goes a long way Devin....spill the beans!

Here's an excerpt,

John Connor is not the main character of Terminator 4; that character is someone named Marcus. Marcus was put 'out of commission' before the nuclear holocaust on Judgment Day and he wakes up about 15 years before the future we see in the original Terminator films, which puts the movie at about 2015 or so. Marcus is a bad ass - think along the lines of Riddick - and what he finds is a blasted world filled with horror. Radiation poisoning, starvation, rampant jaywalking - all the things you expect post-apocalypse. There's also John Connor, who is trying to build a utopian society while running the human resistance.

Hmmm, interesting turn of events for this one then, all i can say is why does a utopian society have to be built AFTER the apocalypse? weird. I'll probably still watch it when it comes out :)

From Empire magazine. Is Josh Brolin to be The Terminator?

A lot of intonation can be lost when a quote is written down. So, when McG replied to the question 'Who would be your perfect Terminator?' with, "Josh Brolin's a very exciting actor - we'll see", he may have been making an observation or he may have been not so subtly hinting at who he's lining up to fill Arnie's leather trousers* for Terminator Salvation: The Future Begins.

The director dropped the remark while talking to The213.com (you can read the full interview here). We've never been sold on the idea of a fourth Terminator film, even when we heard that Christian Bale was going to play an older John Connor. But Brolin as an unstoppable killing machine? We like that. We like that a lot. Really, that would be some very smart casting. Brolin's a terrific actor, he's on a hot streak and with a few hours in the gym, he could absolutely look the part. Most importantly, he's got that slightly cold look in his eyes that any murderous robot needs.

Elsewhere in the interview, McG said that he's spoken with James Cameron, director of the first two movies, extensively because he wants to honour the feel of his films. He also says that the movie takes place in 2019, "so there really is no continuation" from the third. Terminator 4 is currently prepping and has a workable script, but the director still wants to punch it up once the strike is over.

We've been very critical of McG's involvement in this film, but we have to give the guy his dues and say that he seems to be making a lot of the right choices since he came on board. Bale is clearly a great person to have on board; talking with Cameron shows real respect and humility; and adding Brolin to the mix would be an extremely clever move. We haven't liked the films he's made so far, but we're going to give McG the benefit of the doubt here and hope that, for his and all moviegoers' sakes, that he can pull this off. What do you think?

*That sounded a lot more wrong than it was supposed to. On many levels.

The date has been announced and it has Christian Bale in it too!!!

The fourth movie in the Terminator series will be released on 22 May 2009, film studio bosses have announced.
Terminator Salvation: The Future Begins features Batman Begins star Christian Bale as rebel leader John Connor.

Charlie's Angels director McG will take the helm on the movie, which is expected to be the first in a new Terminator trilogy.

Production will begin in May this year in New Mexico in the US and will be the biggest film ever shot in the state.

McG said in a statement that New Mexico represented an arid Western United States in a post-apocalyptic future.

"This is the story of a man's search for belief in himself and his fellow man. It's a long journey and the landscape plays a critical role," he said.

The film will open against family film Night at the Museum II: Escape From the Smithsonian - the sequel to the 2006 film starring Ben Stiller as a night security guard who realises the exhibits where he works come to life when the sun goes down.

The last Terminator movie - Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines - starring California governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, was released in 2003 and earned $150.4m (£75.7m) in the US.

Well some news from AICN

This one's short & sweet...

Coming Soon reports that TERMINATOR SALVATION: THE FUTURE BEGINS is no longer the title of the film. No alternate title was given.

The title TERMINATOR SALVATION had been subject to persistent bludgeoning on the Internet...especially "THE FUTURE BEGINS" subtitle.

No explanation was offered for the alleged title change, although it's a safe bet such negative reaction (as well as the general awkwardness of the title) had something to do with it. Presuming the report is accurate, of course.

John Connor News...

Christian Bale is to play rebel leader John Connor in three sequels to the Terminator franchise, its producers have revealed.

The Welsh-born star, who is soon to be seen in Batman Begins sequel The Dark Knight, has already started shooting the first of those films, Terminator Salvation: The Future Begins.

"He's really an actor's actor, so we're very proud," said Victor Kubicek of film company Halcyon.

Charlie's Angels director McG is directing the new film, which is due to be released on 22 May 2009.

"Christian was our first choice and he's a big fan of The Terminator, so we're very lucky," Kubicek told the BBC at the Cannes Film Festival.

"But with Batman he's already done the whole franchise thing, so we weren't sure he'd respond."

Luckily, said Kubicek's business partner Derek Anderson, "he read the script and he loved it, so he's signed on for all three."

US rap star Common will also have a lead role in the film, as will Australian actor Sam Worthington, who will soon be seen in Titanic director James Cameron's science-fiction epic Avatar.

The producers would not reveal whether Arnold Schwarzenegger would reprise his role as the Terminator. Nor would they discuss character names or plot details.

"We can't talk about the story points at all," said Kubicek, adding the project was being kept strictly under wraps.

"Not everyone gets to see the script. They only see the part of the script that's relevant to the job they're doing."

But the producers promised not to disappoint fans of the time-travelling franchise, which has also spawned TV series The Sarah Connor Chronicles.

"We're both huge Terminator fans and we're just approaching it from the point of view of what we'd like to see," said Anderson.

"Any time we're feeling pressure we just take a step back and say, as fans, 'what would we like to see?'"

Some plot and casting details have now surfaced...

With shooting now underway on the first of McG's new Terminator franchise, titled Terminator Salvation: The Future Begins, Warner Bros has issued a press release that reveals an overview of the plot, as well as a couple of new names in the cast. The plot synopsis is as follows:

"In the highly anticipated new installment of "The Terminator" film franchise, set in post-apocalyptic 2018, Christian Bale stars as John Connor, the man fated to lead the human resistance against Skynet and its army of Terminators. But the future Connor was raised to believe in is altered in part by the appearance of Marcus Wright (Sam Worthington), a stranger whose last memory is of being on death row. Connor must decide whether Marcus has been sent from the future, or rescued from the past. As Skynet prepares its final onslaught, Connor and Marcus both embark on an odyssey that takes them into the heart of Skynet's operations, where they uncover the terrible secret behind the possible annihilation of mankind."

All fairly vague, yes, but this is only a start of shooting announcement. The release also goes on to reveal that Charlotte Gainsbourg (The Science of Sleep) will play Kate Connor, John Connor's wife who was previously played by Claire Danes; and that Jadagrace will a play a character named Star. We have no idea who Jadagrace is and can't find any mention of an actress or singer (she sounds like a singer) with that name anywhere. That is unless she's the daughter of rugby player Wally Lewis. But that would be weird because she's only two months old and probably really not up to the action scenes just yet.

Arnie speaks about T4 (courtesy of Filmstalker):

Arnold Schwarzenegger has been talking about what he thinks of Terminator 4. He's seen some early footage of the film, and for some reason he's not exactly blown away yet.

I'm still bummed he's not in it. But it sounds like he's hedging his bets on the latest film. Come back Arnie!

Arnold Schwarzenegger was talking to the Los Angeles Times about McG's Terminator 4. We haven't heard much from the man himself, on the latest film in the series. And instead of talking up the franchise that he has helped make famous, he's a bit non-plussed so far.

'I still don't know how it will play out with this one. They showed me some footage, but I don't have a feel for the movie. I didn't see enough. I wasn't sure who the Terminator was. I don't know if there is one or if he's the star or the hero. These are the things that determine the success and how the strong the movie will be.'

I'm a bit confused myself on exact plot details, but that's no bad thing. I would have thought that during earlier Terminator films he would have seen early footage, and then seen how it looks as a finished article. Sounds like the main reason he's staying neutral is the special effects, which will play a large part in the film.

'With Batman and Terminator, those big movies, there's a certain expectation and if you don't live up to it, if the movie is not a 10, then the business will be soft. If ['Salvation'] is pushing it forward, it will be breaking records all the time. If [director McG] has the T4 and the kind of shots that has the audience thinking, 'Now how did he do that?' -- then it is Terminator and you can blow everyone away and every record at the box office.'

I suppose not being involved in it, he's under no obligation to talk it up. But probably the most interesting quote is this one:

'I've seen very little footage so I don't really have a feel for it. I hope they do well, and I hope it is a huge hit. I do hope it creates a spectacle on the screen. That is what James Cameron created.'

I'm a big Terminator fan, and one of my main bug bearers about Terminator 3 was that it was a bit removed from the epic films James Cameron made. Could Arnie be hinting that a hugely successful Terminator 4, hinges on the latest film returning to what made the first two so good. If he is, then I'd agree with him. What about you?

More T4 news from Filmstalker:

Helena Bonham Carter, who took the role first destined for Tilda Swinton, has revealed that in Terminator Salvation she'll be playing a baddie.

Although it doesn't sound like she'll be playing a Terminator herself, more perhaps a human collaborator with the Terminators, or maybe just a bad person out for herself now the world has turned to poo.

Speaking of her role in Terminator Salvation Helena Bonham Carter says:

'I kind of play a baddie, definitely a baddie...I don't know how much I'm allowed to say, but I'm a very bad person.'

That's it, that's all the inside information we get from her comments over at SciFi Wire. She does go on to say that she had to take the role since Tim Burton is such a huge Terminator fan.

She does seem excited about being in a big, all male, action popcorn film (as she describes it), and it will be good to see her play a baddie.

I think we can rest assured that this isn't going to be a Terminator role though, I doubt we're going to see female Terminators this early on. Maybe we are, maybe the timeline has radically changed this time. However I think she's either a human looking out for herself in a post apocalyptic world or a collaborator with the machines, something I think wouldn't be too far from reality if this were to really happen.

I'm with some of the comments we're seeing on the site, the latest from Billy, the more we do hear about this new film the more I'm getting interested in the restart of the franchise. Genuinely, and I am a huge Terminator fan (the first two anyway) and a huge Arnie fan, so that's a very big thing for me to say. Take note McG, I'm not going to be won over easily, but what you and the cast are saying, and what you're all doing is starting to sway me.

I'm more than looking forward to this. Thing that makes me laugh is that this is both sequel and prequel to every T film thats gone before. As the story is part what happens now (1980s, 1990s and 2000s) and also what was happening in the future, i.e. JC sending terminators back etc.. So it is quite interesting to see how each film fits in to the pre-existing story and I imagine at times a complex job.

More T4 news from Filmstalker:

A totally unconfirmed rumour is out that Sarah Connor herself, Linda Hamilton, could be in Terminator 4.

Pause.com through Coming Soon say they had spoken to a studio source, who said that Linda Hamilton had signed a three film deal. She would be playing Sarah Connor in flashback scenes. They've since updated the story to say that her representative has denied the story, saying:

'I can tell you that Linda is a big fan of T1 and T2 and would be very interested in hearing about participating in the new film'

Who knows though, got me thinking that's for sure. It would be awesome if she was in Terminator 4. I can't see her being the beefed up butt kicker of Terminator 2, but it would help explain the gaps between films. Would you want her in T4?

Filmstalker:

Terminator Salvation is managing to hide its secrets pretty well, but McG just can't help teasing the fans about what the upcoming film holds for John Connor and the fate of the world, and in his latest tease it looks like he might just have given away a rather big clue.

McG himself has revealed that there's a big clue to the new film where we haven't looked yet, and he told us where.

The clue for the Terminator film is within the title itself, Terminator Salvation. McG goes on to give a few further clues through MTV Movies Blog:

'Even though we may sin ultimately we deserve a second chance...Sometimes life is worth living when you make sacrifices so others may benefit.'

Okay so if we think about that title what does it mean, especially alongside those comments. Could it be that the salvation is that humans get a second chance and that's given to them by the Terminators?

Now I'll have to warn you here, if you hadn't guessed already, some of this is possibly going to head into spoiler territory. I'm going to talk about things that I've already heard rumours about, and things that have already been revealed, and conjecture that might just turn out to be true.

You have been warned.

Perhaps the machines have a second chance themselves, a second chance at living together with the humans? That might tie up a few things about the Marcus character that have been hanging about, like the very early story I caught about Marcus being a Terminator.

Except that if he is a Terminator, which has all but been announced, why have we been hearing things about John Connor talking with him and discussing whether to trust him or not, and even seeing the pictures of him going face to face with him?

Okay, he might not know he's a Terminator, and yet it's clear that he knows he's not the good guy. Could the machines be taking a cue from Battlestar Galactica and perhaps making some of the Terminators have enough self awareness to consider the fact that both humans and machines could exist together and Marcus is one of them?

No, I think that sounds a little too much like Galactica and it really would stick out against the Terminator franchise.

Perhaps Marcus is the human or Terminator that finally brought about the war and Connor is giving him a chance to redeem himself and save what is left of humanity in order that they can start a resistance? Perhaps Marcus will get that second chance and he's the one destined to make the sacrifice to let Connor start the resistance despite being the one who brought about the destruction in the first place?

What do you think it means, and just who is getting the salvation in McG's Terminator Salvation?

Bonham-Carter halts shooting of T4 says Imdb:

Helena Bonham Carter has halted filming on the new Terminator movie to fly back to Britain after four members of her family were killed in a horrific car crash in South Africa.

Bonham Carter's relatives were on a safari holiday in the country when a minibus they were travelling in on Wednesday spun out of control and flipped over after a tyre burst.

The actress' cousin Fiona Bonham Carter, 51, escaped with a broken shoulder. But Fiona's son Marcus Egerton-Warburton, 14, her mother Brenda, 74, and stepfather Francis Kirkwood, 75, all died.

Fiona's sister-in-law Kay Boardman, 54, also perished in the crash, in a remote area six hours' drive from Johannesburg.

Bonham Carter has now been granted indefinite leave from the set of Terminator Salvation in Albuquerque, New Mexico to fly back to the U.K. to comfort her distraught family.

A source tells British newspaper the Sunday Express, "Everyone here was in a state of shock when the news came through. I saw an assistant of Helena's who told me she is absolutely stricken with grief. She can't believe what happened."

Apparently Arnie may appear in T4 says Filmstalker:

A Terminator film without Arnold Schwarzenegger doesn't seem right. But it turns out Arnie could be making an appearance, by some CGI trickery and a voiceover. He's been spotted on the set on Terminator 4, alongside Christian Bale.

This is all rumour at this stage. But if it's true the plot really could go anywhere. My head hurts.

Last we heard from Arnold Schwarzenegger, he wasn't exactly glowing in his review of the Terminator 4 footage he'd seen so far. But now rumour has it, he could yet be in the new film. Given his current day job as Governor of California, a starring role in a film is unrealistic. However a photo has appeared online apparently showing Arnie on the set, talking to Christian Bale.

Latino Review has the photo, it could just mean he's paying the set a visit, or it could mean a bit more. The rumour, supposedly from someone in Warner Bros., is that Arnie has been doing some voiceover work for the film. And the plan is to replace Roland Kickinger's face with a digital version of Arnie.

All of that sounds possible, but it could also all be rumour. So I guess we take it with a pinch of salt for now. I suppose it would solve the problem of Arnie not having the time to devote to a film these days. Could it be Arnie appears as a newer version of Kickinger's Terminator?

Would you want Arnie back this way? Do you think it would work?

Would love Arnie to be in it,would be pretty strange without him.I thought T3 was pretty good, not a bad film by any means so im quite looking forward to this installment.Would love to see Micheal Beihn make a cameo as well (Kyle Reese of the first film).

Oh dear....

Credit: filmstalker:

When McG was announced as the director for Terminator 4, there were some people who were none too pleased. And soon enough McG was talking about how James Cameron had given him his blessing. Good news coming from the main man we thought.

Well it turns out Cameron didn't offer his blessing, and hasn't seen any script. Could McG be telling porkies to gain some popularity?

The announcement of McG as director of Terminator 4 was met with some trepidation by Terminator fans. And then McG seemed to calm things a bit by saying that he'd been talking to James Cameron. And also that Cameron had been consulted on how to go forward with the new film. As a fan of the series it did make a difference to know Cameron was involved even a little bit. Now it turns out, McG may have been bending the truth a bit. Speaking to E Online through JoBlo, Cameron had this to say when asked if he was involved:

It could be a big steaming pile or it could be brilliant. Sam Worthington is in the Avatar and the new Terminator and he likes the script, but I never saw it. There was no blessing involved.

Maybe McG has been caught out. But surely he would have known Cameron would end up commenting at some stage on the film. Who knows. Thankfully the teaser trailer for it looks good. Let's hope it's a great film with or without Cameron's blessing.

McG did those awful Charlie's Angels films didn't he?
