Was thinking of doing this a while now but for you asian cinema fans, who are the actors or actress's you enjoy the work of and you recommend? Lets make a list of some of them that we like and recommend to each other, perhaps there is some we havent seen yet or we dont know of so lets discuss about and sharea about them and such, which I hope this makes sense ^^. Here are just a few of my faverates and a small introduction to them.
Tak Sakaguchi Japanese Martial arts star who has starred in several fun, action packed movies like Death Trance, Versus, Alive and Shinobi.Has a great look and good acting skills, talented martial artist but usually plays the same kind of Quiet, strong hero type.Fun to watch and a very underrated star.
Yukie Nakama Gorgeous Japanese actress who has potrayed various different characters with great effect in movies like Shinobi,Love and Pop and Ring 0.Has been in various Dramas and tv shows and is a joy to watch simply because she is soooo beautiful!
Doo Hong Jung Korean martial arts star with various roles in movies like Natural City, the City of Violence, Arahan ect ect.Im a big fan of his films but some of them i cant remember the names of right now but he is a really cool actor with great skills in the martial arts and is always great to watch.
Eun Kyung Shin Famous actress in her movies My Wife is a Gangster and its Sequal, plus in Uzumaki and The Ring Virus, stunning looks and is always fun to watch in MWISG,she is one of my faverate Korean actress's.
Shingo Kitori I love this guy! Great actor in comedy roles, from the fun Ninnin, to his starring role in Saayuki the 2006 series and 07 movie. Also been on many tv shows and other various films, funny and enjoyable actor with a great abiity in all kinds of films.Big fan of this guy ^^.
Of course I agree with Yukie Nakama. She can do serious drama and screwball comedy with ease.
Obviously we'll take Bruce, Jet and Jackie as read shall we? And I think I'll leave Zhang Ziyi for GLOWlad.
So my list:
Toshiro Mifune
The Guvnor. Nuff said.
Takeshi Kitano
Not since Buster Keaton have a I seen a man be able to express so much with just one facial expression. Can play the tough guy, the sympathetic everyman, the bad guy or a comic foil without changing a thing yet still appears different every time. Probably the only actor to be able to fill Shintaro Katsus sandals as Zatoichi.
Shu Qi
Despite being a nude model and star of CAT III films, Shu managed to leave the stigma of being hired for her looks behind and made her name in comedies. She has proven herself in dramatic roles and action films too. She just needs that one big hit to establish herself.
Song Kang-ho
Another versatile actor from Korea. Whether it is a comedy role or serious one, he manages to steal the scene if not the whole film - with ease. Maybe not a stand out name but you know his face.
Tadanobu Asano
Probably the nearest modern Japan has to a method actor. His roles as a Ronin in Kitanos Zatoichi, the sadistic gang member Kakihara in Ichi The Killer or the troubled but brilliant medical student Hiroshi in Vital, show his versatility and ability to reinvent himself to the point of being unrecognisable each time.
Andy Lau
From playing second fiddle to Jackie Chan to cheesy comedies, Andy Lau has steadily built himself a reputation as a top leading man in Hong Kong cinema and has the impressive catalogue of hits to show for it.
Tony Leung
The baby faced Hong Kong actor is no slouch in the martial arts department or as an action hero but he also shines in comedies. However he plays the role of the conflicted and under pressure with such ease and believability. He has remarkable gravitas for someone still with plenty of years ahead of him.
Tatsuya Fujiwara
The Battle Royale star has metamorphosised over the years - on screen of course - from the introverted school boy to a confident young man. Has the looks and ability to switch between good guy and bad without compromise. Could be a huge name in the future.
Good stuff there Mib, some fantastic actors in that list :), Takeshi Kitano is a legend so of course he needed to be included! And yep, i think everyone knows about Bruce, Jet and Jackie so no need to add them here :).Iv not seen some of the first actors work you put in your post so i really ought to do that. Here are some more i admire and enjoy :).
Anne Suzuki Gorgeous, cute little actress that starred in the Returner and also in various tv shows and Initial D Driftracer.A young star that will no doubt get brighter and brighter as she continues in her career. Is a very funny girl but can be good in serious roles to.I love her ^^.
Donnie Yen the man oozes coolness. Not as well known as a lot of his fellow Chinese/Hong kong actors but is just as,if not better, then many of them.Has been in several great films, Hero, Dragon Tiger Gate, Seven Sword...a fantastic martial artist and good actor, one of my faverates at the moment!
Masaki Sakai Popular tv personality and tv show, actor and musician, Most notable for the Original Monkey tv series as the Monkey man himself! Great charisma, fun to watch and a legend over in japan.I have him in some tv shows and he is just great ^^.
Aya Ueto Azumi actress, kick ass, beautiful, decent actress, completley enjoy her work in Azumi and has been in several other films and tv shows.
With my limited knowledge of Asian cinema Ive kind of bent the rues a bit and featured some Asian actors best known for working in the west...hope you don't mind!
Lost's Yun-Jin Kim...who is delectable. The best reason not to give up on Lost...
Michiko Nishiwaki, my fave of the babes of Hong Kong martial arts cinema down the years.
Lauren Kim, you won't of heard of this beautiful Chinese-American actress I guess, she has to date had only tiny roles in big American movies, and big roles in obscure American movies. Meryl Streep she isn't, but she is athletic, kicks arse and is very very beautiful.
Zhang Ziyi...my pick for most beautiful girl in the world, vastly talented too...
Nice stuff glowlad,i actually never watch lost so i never knew it had such a gorgeous girl in it ^-^.Never heard of the other 2 though but might have to check them out, and im not entirely Zhangs biggest fan but she is very beautiful and a very good actress so good to see you add her ^^.I think iv seen a lot of the Actors in MIBs list but i need to see more of a couple.Theres so many great talent out there in Asia that its nice to have an apprechiation thread like this even though no doubt itll be just me, Mib and perhaps you sometimes glowlad to talk about them!
Wasn't Michiko Nishiwaki the girl in one of the Jackie Chan films Winners & Sinners or My Lucky Stars one of those where she beat up the female lead and Sammo Hung laid her out with one punch?
GLOWlad you should really join a DVD rental place like Lovefilm and catch up on all the great Asian film and Anime. You're missing out on too much gold!
Slowly but surely Im broadening my horizons, film four has been valuable with that, with stuff like Lady Vengeance...
Yeah its Michiko in My Lucky Stars...thats the first time I saw her...I love that scene, she walks along placid, wearing a kimnono, then theatrically whips it off, and strikes a pose showing off her leotard clad, buff physique, its a great moment. She then kicks some arse in a vicious fight, but in an anti climax, being ko'd by a single blow by Sammo.
She is Japanese and so often was cast as a villain in Hong Kong movies. She'd make a great henchwoman in a Bond movie.
Nice stuff Glowlad ^^. You know when you go over to japan, try pick up some japanese films there, a lot have japanese subs but some dont..But yes broaden your horizon, watch Asian cinema because in my and no doubt MIB's eyes its the best in the world with some of the best actors and actress's in the world today.Ill check some of the actors work out you both suggested when i can.Zhang Ziyi can easily play a bad girl because she did that great in Rush Hour 2 didnt she? Or was it the first?..Cant remember!
Thanks for thectip Totoro, Ill certainly have a look, though my limited funds]will probably go towards Joshi stuuf and perhaps an Aki Hoshino DVD or two!
I wanted Zhang Ziyi to kick stupid Chris Tucker's arse in Rush Hour 2! But she made a cool villain...as a criminal mastermind in a Bond movie she would fulfill every requirement...beautful, amazing fighting skills, gifted actress...she could kick Daniel Craig's arse too!
Havent got round to see MWIG2 yet but i know she is the main character in the third isnt she? She would make a great bad girl in many movies, perhaps because she isnt in reality all that nice of a person (again im going by all iv heard from my chinese friends who no doubt no more about Zhang then i do)!
Memoirs of a Geisha was controversial in China and Japan, with Chinese actresses playing key Japanese roles. Behind this. there is a lot of unfinished business between the two nations. I think a sincere and heartfelt apology from Japan for its actions in world war 2 towards China and Korea would ease tensions.
Indeed Mib. Japan did a lot of terrible things in the past espicially to the poor koreas, iv been taught a lot about what they did in the past by my korean friends and its horrifying, so most koreans dislike the Japanese along with the Chinese.Iv not fully watched Memoirs of a geisha myself yet but it is indeed a bold move to use chinese actress for the main role.I have to watch that sometime .
Indeed...but I do feel that many in Japan never faced up to its behaviour in world war 2 in the way that Germany for example did. The emperor's role in the war was airbrushed out of history, as was their appalling treatment of Chinese/Korean civillians, many of whom are still alive today. Sadly, there still exists an anti-Korean, anti-Chinese, and indeed anti-Gaijin prejudice in Japan.
Im instinctively in love with Japan, as you all know, its the most amazing place with amazing people, but it has its faults like anywhere.
Indeed Glowlad. Some of the stories iv heard about Japan and what their soldiers got up to by killing and brutalizing thousands of innocent korean people decades ago really makes me sad,its awful that such a great country has such a terrible past like that,iv seen several photographs of graphic murders by the japanese to Korean women and children that just isnt acceptable in this world...Its amazing such a kawaii place like Japan has had such a past like that but thankfully things are gradually improving between the nations, slowely, but improving. Im not great with this kind of talk ^^ but i wish Japan would admit its faults and what it did and apologize for the past.
Amazing how a topic starting with japanese actors and such turns into a topic about war and japanes history and such things!
Gomen nasai...to return slighty back to topic, its those prejudices which put Zhang Ziyi and Gong Li in a very difficult position...to the Chinese it was a disgrace to see great Chinese actresses playing as they saw it, Japanese prostitutes. Whereas Japanese people hated iconic Geisha being played by Chinese women.
There was also uproar when Zhang Ziyi kissed Japanese actor Ken Wantanabe in the film.
Michelle Yeoh tried to defend the casting decision by saying that they were actors playing roles just like any other role. It's a fair point but it is also indicative of Hollywood's ignorance when it comes to casting Asian roles - they think we don't know the difference so it doesn't matter.
Unfortunately there aren't many Japanese actresses in Hollywood so they went for the bankable option as you would expect them to.
Ultimately it would be healthy to get to a stage where it wouldnt matter, either to the Chinese or Japanese. But as I say, there are issues which need resolving for that to happen.
Ideally it should be like an American playing a Brit or vice versa...interesting to see if they get the accent, performance right, but no more controversial than that.
nice stuff glowlad :) i wish i was as smart as you and Mib about really delicate and politcal subjects like what has been said about. But back on topic and i have to say iv really taken a liking to Shingo Katori this year, this guy is a hugely popular in japan as a member of a rock group called SMAP and has starred in many things from Saiyuuki and Ninin to other shows. He oozes charisma and is really funny, but he can also be a very good serious actor to.The 11 show series of Saiyuuki was made into the brilliant feature and its rumoured he will be back in a second series of the show so i cant wait. Heres a couple of pics of him ^_^.
Its easy to see why he is so popular, he can do everything! Also here is a picture of my faverate Japanese comedian Machi machi which is far nicer then the one in my avatar, i watched her in a lot of tv shows there and she is really adoreable, scarey but cute and very funny,i think shes been in a few tv series and such,i have to see her live, shes awesome.
Korean actor and model Lee Eon of Coffee Prince fame died in a tragic Motorcycle accident today accortding to some reports,i know of his work a little and was a very gifted actor, only 27 to so a real shame and tragedy to lose such a talented person. Was tipped to become quite a star in korea and in film in the future from what my friends said.
Well he wasent a big screen actor (he would of been in the future)so he wouldnt have been to famous abroad but hes very popular in korea and for many koreans (espicially of the female gender!).Iv seen him on a few episodes of coffee prince and he was pretty cool.Just a tragic waste of a young life with so much promise.
Masako Natsume tribute i found online and thought id share here, made me weep a little bit, beautiful song to.I saw her in one film and a lot in the Monkey television show and she was fantastic, and a really beautiful woman. Was quite surprising when i found out she passed espicially at 27,very beautiful tribute.Going to post a few of my current faverate asian stars here soon :),wish more people would apprechiate them like me and mib do though..
Korean actress and tv personality Choi jin sil has died this week...very sad..another tragedy to hit the entertainment industry in korea.I saw her in a few things and my friends spoke higley of her.Very sad news :(.Its not unusual to hear though as quite a few korean actress's have committed suicide over the years, its quite alarming,im not sure what happened to Choi but it sounds like another suicide of an actress :(.
Its happened to quite a few actress's in korea over the years, some very young and talented actress's have unfortunatly took their own life due to breaking up with their boyfriends,it seems girls take love splits very hard there, with my own experiance chatting with a friend of mine, korean females in love become very hurt when they end up splitting with the person they like.It made it hard watching Brotherhood knowing about one of the female actress in the film had passed on.Very sad indeed.
