OK, I've seen a tournament like this on other sites, and I decided to bring it here. But I want ours to be original. Give me your nominations.
I will try to handle this, and I think that we are going to have a 16-band tournament. I'll try to set up the bracket with seeds and such by the end of the weekend. Then hopefully we can start voting by next week. Let me know if you are interested.

Good idea SOD, but the problem is whether there are enough bands for each genre.
I only proffered the Sex Pistols because I was thinking objectively and not just listing my favourites. Realistically are there 6 truly great HOF worthy punk bands? Only The Clash, The Stranglers and The Damned come to mind and musically they all left their punk roots behind fairly quickly.
OK, great feedback guys. I think that here's what we'll do. We'll break it down into six categories and have 8 bands in each. That would give us a 48-band tournament (or there abouts, depending on the fan fave category....read on). We'll do it the only way that is fair: by genre. OK, the six genres (and these are open to interpretation) are:
Pop/Punk (we should be able to find 8 bands/artists for that) Metal (SoD should help here) General Rock (for bands that dont fit the metal category) Classic (a place where we could put classic rock bands so that they don't take up space in the general rock bracket...there could also be others in this category as well). Other (These could be "wild cards" that didnt make other categories or just random bands that dont fit anywhere else) Fan Faves (This would be bands that you think won't be in the field but you would like to see. Everybody gets a pick in this category, and it doesn't matter how many bands there are...we'll make it work. PM your picks to me by Monday, as that will be when I put together a tentative bracket for the tournament).
Remeber, there is no way that everybody will be completely happy with this tournament. I just wanted to make it as great and interesting as possible, so I opened it up to suggestions. There is no way that we will get every band that deserves to be in here, but we just to have to make sure that we get the major ones. Remeber, this is for fun.
Thoughts?
UPDATE!!!!

That's Disambiguation right there. Whilst Zeppelin weren't metal they were Pioneers of the Genre that influanced many a Metal and Hard Rock band of today.
I think we should take these heats one at a time and do this properly by doing one a week including a You Tube video of the band's more famous song so people can make an informed choice.
If you haven't already figured this out, we are switching this from Greatest Band of All-Time to Greatest Music Act of All-Time. I am also going to group some people together. For instance, one of the choices in the Pop/Punk category will be Michael/Jackson 5. Also, in the metal category, well will have Ozzy/Black Sabbath.
Also, don't forget to give me more suggestions as well as your picks for the Fan Fave category. We really need more bands in that category, as we only have two so far.
After much thought, I have decided to put Led Zeppelin in the metal category. I don't think that they fit in that category, but it's one of the weakest and it's hard to argue that they are NOT metal.
I have also taken SoD's suggestion into account, and we will do the voting this way. I will post the contestants in one category with a video of one of their more famous songs. You will then have a week to vote for each matchup in that category.
I will try to get a tentative list up by 5 pm tomorrow (which is somewhere around midnight in the UK), but that list is not final. You can still make suggestions, but you will have to give me a reason for your suggestion as well as tell me who you would take out. But that's tomorrow. Right now I need your picks for the Fan Fave category and more suggestions in each category.

Zeppelin may have influenced many hard rock and metal bands but they weren't metal just as Muddy Waters and Howlin Wolf who influenced Zeppelin were not rock.
My fan fave choice is obviously KISS.
If you are going to include solo artists then for me the shoe ins are Elvis, Cliff Richard, Neil Young, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Muddy Waters, Bob Dylan and BB King.
How about Pussycat Dolls, Girls Aloud, Boyzone, Westlife, Take That and not forgetting Morning Musume?
Seriously has anyone mentioned Queen? I see Aerosmith already listed.
Frank Sinatra has to be in the individuals list. Also Sammy Davis Jr, Lionel Richie/The Commodores and Prince aka Symbol aka The Artist Formally Known as....
Don't worry Eve, Queen is safely in the bracket. So I am assuming that your pick for Fan Faves is Pussycat Dolls? If this is not your pick, then please let me know.
I also have another quick update. The "Other" category has now become the place where we will have 2 separate categories. There will be 8 bands that didn't make it in the other categories as well as 8 individual artists. That means that this is the only "heat" with 16 choices. Anyway, I know that this bracket is very confusing, but I hope that I will make it clear when I post the initial brackets tomorrow. Keep the suggestions coming!!1

Wow...this has become more of a chore than it was supposed to be. I really want to give every band/act a chance, but there are just some that I don't think have a legitimate shot at even winning a first round matchup. I know that the bracket isn't going to be perfect, but I am going to make sure that I get all of the major ones in there. I hope that everybody is at least happy with my bracket.
By the way, that will be posted tomorrow. Don't forget to get your picks for Fan Faves into me. We only have four bands in that category right now, and I want to get at least eight.

Actually I was only joking about those first few upto and including Morning Musume.
But all the ones after that I was serious about.
I know PCD wouldn't stand a chance with you lot, so Queen would be my Fan Fave, although PCD was tempting if only to annoy MiB if they made it through the rounds lol.
OK, here is a tentative lineup for the tournament. It is still not official, but changes can only be made if your suggestion comes with a legitimate and persuasive reason. Each of the heats seedings will be determined by a random draw, and the final six pairings will also be determined via the same method. So, without further ado:
Pop/Punk Beach Boys Boyz II Men The Clash Green Day Jackson 5/Michael Jackson The Offspring The Ramones Sex Pistols
Metal AC/DC Black Sabbath/Ozzy Osbourne Guns N Roses Iron Maiden Judas Priest Led Zeppelin (don't kill me) Megadeath Metallica
Rock Aerosmith Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band Def Leppard Grateful Dead Nirvana Rage Against the Machine Red Hot Chili Peppers U2
Classic The Beatles The BeeGees The Eagles Fleetwood Mac Journey Pink Floyd The Rolling Stones The Who
Other (2 Categories) Individual Johnny Cash Ray Charles Eric Clapton Bob Dylan Elvis Jimi Hendrix Madonna Prince
Wild Cards (rank your top 5; you may not vote for more than 2 from one category) Orange = Pop/Punk Blue = Metal Purple = Rock/Classic Green = Individuals
The Damned The Osmonds Spice Girls The Stranglers Take That Motley Crue Motorhead Pantera The Scorpions Slayer Van Halen The Allman Brothers Cream The Doors Jefferson Airplane Sammy Davis Jr. Lionel Richie Frank Sinatra Rod Stewart Stevie Wonder
Fan Favorites (non-negotiable) Alter Bridge (Darth Mattitude) The Killers (David McKinney) KISS (Man in Black) Chuck Paramore (Symphony of Destruction) Queen (NymVette) Rammstein (Doctor of Desire)
*NOTE: The Fan Favorite category IS NOT locked; please PM me your picks for this category.
You have 24 hours to get in any last minute suggestions. The tournament will be finalized tomorrow, and voting for the first round will begin in the Pop/Rock category.

I listen to all of those, but I gave you all a chance to add anyone that you want in there. If you have a group that you would like to throw them in there as a Wild Card, then by all means, do it.
So I'm assuming that you have your picks in order, MiB, as the top 8 Wild Cards will be determined based on a points system. Let me know if this is not the case.

Haha...go ahead an vote for T.A.T.U. if you would like, Eve. Like I said, everybody has 5 wild card picks. I would like you to vote for the ones that I have up there, but it is your choice. The 8 wild cards will be decided based on a points system, so I need to have at least 8 bands/acts voted for. We will have the wild card voting continue through the first few rounds of voting, so don't feel pressured to get your picks in now. A final list should be up sometime today or early East Coast time tomorrow.

Sorry about that MiB, but the Sex Pistols videos on YouTube are scarce for some reason. And don't worry: these matchups are complete random. I didn't cherry pick them, but I did think that they were interesting as I was posting them.
OK, my votes:
(1)The Ramones vs. (8)Boyz II Men (4)Sex Pistols vs. (5)Beach Boys (3)The Offspring vs. (6)Jackson 5/Michael Jackson (2)Green Day vs. (7)The Clash
By the way, you have until next TUESDAY (Dec. 11) to vote. Until then, enjoy the videos. The classic Beach Boys was a bit of a find, in my opinion.

Ad here are the Pistols with the classic Pretty Vacant:
UPDATE: You have until next TUESDAY (Dec. 10) to vote for your Wild Cards. Either post them here or send them in a PM to me (please rank your picks 1-5).
