Elvis vs. Madonna - No contest whatsoever Jimi Hendrix vs. Ray Charles - Tough but Jimi for me Johnny Cash vs. Eric Clapton - Real tough but I went for Eric cos I'm such a mark for Cream and the Blues Breakers album he did Bob Dylan vs. Prince - Not a fan of either but I hate Prince so...
I tried to include them in the Pop/Punk, Individual, and Wild Card Brackets, but none of them made the cut. The closest one was Eminem, who was number 9 in the Individual bracket. I would have liked to see him face Elvis, however. Run DMC was also close. Don't worry, SoD. They were considered.

Elvis vs. Madonna (Maddy may be the queen of pop, but Elvis is The King!) Jimi Hendrix vs. Ray Charles Johnny Cash vs. Eric Clapton ('Hurt' is brilliant, but Eric gets it overall for me) Bob Dylan vs. Prince (Can't stand the little freak!)
Elvis def. Madonna (5-1) Jimi Hendrix def. Ray Charles (6-0)-A bit surprised that this was unanimous... Eric Clapton def. Johnny Cash (5-1)-This was an interesting matchup. Prince def. Bob Dylan (3-2)*-Now, here is one that I am very surprised by. I figured that Dylan would dominate.
*Since there was a tie, I decided not to include Celina's picks, as the original idea was to get her picks to AVOID a tie.
Anyway, some people didn't vote in this category...
Wild Cards will be up soon.

Tough round. Is this the first Wild Card round? I don't notice any of my picks here...
Stevie Wonder vs. Foo Fighters - Tough as I'm not a huge fan of either Cream vs. Slayer - No contest but I like both Van Halen vs. The Doors - I think Van Halen just tip it but both band's are great Frank Sinatra vs. Motorhead - since I own Motorhead CDs and not Frankie ..
Stevie Wonder vs. Foo Fighters (this is maybe a bit of projection down the road) Cream vs. Slayer (no contest. easiest pick so far besides The Beatles) Van Halen vs. The Doors (not a huge fan of eitehr, but Van Halen is more talented) Frank Sinatra vs. Motorhead (Although I smell an upset...)

You HAVE to be kidding me! A brand new band with one hit beats an established band based in the UK? What are you guys thinking?
MiB mentioned it in the guitarist awards, and I think I'll reiterate it here.
WE ARE NOT VOTING FOR OUR FAVORITES. PLEASE VOTE FOR THE BAND THAT YOU THINK IS GREATER, MORE ESTABLISHED, ETC. THE FACT THAT YOU DON'T LIKE A BAND SHOULDN'T EVEN BE MENTIONED AT ALL. PLEASE TAKE THIS INTO ACCOUNT.

In this instance I feel that rule should be relaxed a little* because it's a "fan favourite" choice but I agree wholeheartedly with the other rounds that should apply. However that really should have been established more strictly at the beginning otherwise I wouldn't have vote Motorhead over Sinatra!
* For people like me who have not heard of an act or don't like that kind of music it's hard to make an objective vote, especially on one track.
Well, that's shit because Obviously your Personal Favorate is going to be the one you're going to vote for.
For instance by your "Rules" if Queen were to go up against Racer X or Steve Vai then Racer X or Steve Vai would win due to the Technique of the playing of Vai and Gilbert.
Edit :-
As for the "Established" thing that's not the way it works otherwise it wouldn't be a "Greatest band thread" it would be a "Most Established band thread" now wouldn't it.
Greatest means the band that the people prefer. That could be a fully established band or it could be a bunch of new comers. Point is the people would be the ones who picked them for their individual Attributes.
Thanks for Listening

Point No 1 - Just because Gilbert and Vai are techinical proficient players does not make their bands better than the overall package of Queen. And Brian May owns both hose guys. Speed isn't everything you know!
Point No 2 - Greatest and favourite are two different things. Anyone who votes Slipknot over The Beatles as greatest band just becasue they prefer Slipknot wants shooting.
I understand that David wants us to taken an objective approach to this and I agree; but the fan favourites is different because those were subjective nominations and not objective ones.
I see where your coming from MiB but the whole premice of "Greatest Band" is a personal thing. Like one man's Eddie Van Halen is another Man's Aqua.
I guess what I'm getting at is someone's vote should be their own personal preferance and not be held down by rules and regulations and the like. Because After all surely Greatness (Like Beauty) is in the eye of the beholder.
Yes but in some instances there comes a time when one needs to think objectively.
Perhaps if the rules had been more clearly defined to begin with then the voting may be different. Unfortunately I believe that we have all been voting for our own favourites which is the usual route to take in these polls unless stressed otherwise.
A poll based on facts (record sales, influence, longevity, etc) over personal tastes would be equally interesting to see.
OK sorry, but I put this tournament on hiatus for awhile after the first round so that I could think of something to jazz it up a little bit. As we stand right now, there are 28 bands left in this tournament. What I've decided is that we will re-seed the tournament (based on rankings done by yours truly) and add four eliminated bands from the first round. The first four members to suggest an eliminated band will have their band placed back in the pool.
I'll do a little more explaining, but as it stands right now, we are set for a relaunch of the tourney on Monday. Anyway, here are the 28 bands/acts currently alive in the pool:
The Ramones, Beach Boys, Michael Jackson/Jackson 5, The Clash Metallica, AC/DC, Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath Aerosmith, U2, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Nirvana The Beatles, The Eagles, Fleetwood Mac, Rolling Stones Elvis, Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton/Cream (change), Prince Foo Fighters, Slayer, Van Halen, Frank Sinatra Paramore, KISS, Alter Bridge, Queen
Here are the bands eligible for re-entry into the tournament:
Boyz II Men, Sex Pistols, The Offspring, Green Day Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Megadeth, Guns N' Roses Def Leppard, Bruce Springsteen/E Street Band, Grateful Dead, Rage Against the Machine BeeGees, The Who, Journey, Pink Floyd Madonna, Ray Charles, Johnny Cash, Bob Dylan Stevie Wonder, The Doors, Motorhead The Killers, Rammstein
Some excellent choices there for re-entry. I guess it depends on who gets here first to claim dibs on a nomination.
Anyway, let me just stress something right now. This is a greatest band of all-time thread. Please don't vote for your favorites. If you don't have a good enough opinion (don't know the bands), please don't vote. Try to be as fair as possible. Thank you.

Yup. No offence but while they were huge in the US, they did nothing over here where only hard rock fans would know them. Escape only made no 32 on the UK album charts while Who's Crying Now made no 46 and was their highest charting single.
I'm a huge Journey fan as well. "Don't Stop Believin" is actually my favorite 80s song.
But I think we're going to go with The Who. I'll have another post in this thread later to let you all know what's going on. Don't have time now, though. Class!

I know that I said I'd have the next round up by Monday, but I've been sick and this is the first day that I've felt like getting online to do something other than check my email. Anyway, the matchups for the next round are set. Obviously, they are ranked. No, they are not perfect rankings. But I tried to make the best matchups as well as put the best bands in the best position to advance. Here they are:
The Beatles vs. Paramore Queen vs. Alter Bridge Led Zeppelin vs. Slayer KISS vs. The Clash Metallica vs. Stevie Wonder Rolling Stones vs. Megadeth Aerosmith vs. Iron Maiden Elvis vs. Pink Floyd Nirvana vs. Frank Sinatra The Eagles vs. Beach Boys Eric Clapton/Cream vs. Jackson 5/Michael Jackson Fleetwood Mac vs. U2 AC/DC vs. Black Sabbath/Ozzy Osbourne Red Hot Chili Peppers vs. Jimi Hendrix Van Halen vs. Prince Foo Fighters vs. The Ramones
There is a bracket, and I'll keep track of that as we go along. For this first round, we will have 4 voting sessions, each consisting of 4 matchups (8 bands). I'll announce the first 4 matchups in the next post.
