The Beatles vs. Paramore
Foo Fighters vs. The Ramones
Nirvana vs. Frank Sinatra
Elvis vs. Pink Floyd

The Beatles vs. Paramore
The Beatles (John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, Ringo Starr) are an early favorite to win this entire tournament. Hailing from Liverpool, England, they were one of the most successful pop and rock groups in the 1960s and they released more than 40 albums, singles, and EPs that made it to number one. In 2004, Rolling Stone ranked The Beatles as no. 1 on their 100 greatest artists of all-time.

Paramore (Hayley Williams, Josh Farro, Jeremy Davis, Zac Farro) is a Grammy-nominated American pop/rock group. They gained mainstream attention in 2007 with their second album, Riot!, which includes hit single "Misery Business" and has been certified gold. They are praised for their youth and are geared toward a younger fan base.

Foo Fighters vs. The Ramones
The Foo Fighters (Dave Grohl, Nate Mendel, Taylor Hawkins, Chris Shiflett) are an American rock band formed by Dave Grohl in 1995. Grohl, a former drummer for Nirvana, wrote songs that he held back from the members of the band for fear of ruining their chemistry. After Kurt Cobain's death in 1994, Grohl decided to go solo and eventually started this band. They have a worldwide following, a number of hit singles ("Best of You," "DOA," "This is a Call," "Everlong," and "The Pretender"), and two Grammy Awards for Best Rock Album (There is Nothing Left to Lose and One by One). Their current album, Echoes, Silence, Patience, and Grace is nominated for multiple 2008 Grammy Awards, including Best Rock Album.

The Ramones (Joey, Johnny, Dee Dee Ramone among others) are referred to as the first punk rock group. The members of the band all made up stage names although none of them were actually related. Although they failed to gain much mainstream attention during their active years (1974-1996), they have gained more and more attention in recent years, with accolades like being on Rolling Stone's 100 Greatest Artists list and on the same list as compiled by VH1. They were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2002.

Nirvana vs. Frank Sinatra
Nirvana (Kurt Cobain, Krist Novoselic and Dave Grohl among others) is an American rock band formed in 1987 by Cobain and Novoselic and lasted until Cobain's death in 1994. Stemming from their breakthough single "Smells Like Teen Spirit" (which was named VH1's top song of the 90s), Nirvana became one of the most influential and important bands in history. They have sold more than 50 million albums worldwide since their debut and remain one of the most popular bands in the world, although they haven't been together in more than 14 years.

Frank Sinatra (1915-1998) was an American musician and Academy Award-winning actor. After becoming popular as a member of Capitol Records in the 1950s, Sinatra started his own record company, Reprise Records, later in the decade. He is one of the most influential "crooners" of all-time and is known as "Ol Blue Eyes."

Elvis vs. Pink Floyd
Elvis Presley (1935-1977) was an American singer and was an icon known simply as "The King." He is known for a style called "rockabilly," a fusion of upbeat country with rhythm and blues music. He is also know for his unique dancing. His songs are some of the most famous of all-time, and they include "Jail House Rock" and "Hound Dog." He is the only music performer to be inducted into four halls of fame, including the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

Pink Floyd (Nick Mason, Rick Wright and David Gilmour, among others) is an English progressive and psychedelic rock music band. They are known for their philosophical lyrics and elaborate live shows. Rising from the underground music scene in London in the late 60s, Pink Floyd became one of the most famous bands worldwide. They have had various leaders (Syd Barrett, Roger Waters, and David Gilmour) and their hits include "The Wall" and "Wish You Were Here."

YOU HAVE ONE WEEK TO VOTE (VOTING WILL CLOSE ON WEDNESDAY, FEB. 13).

AND REMEMBER, PLEASE BE OBJECTIVE. VOTE FOR THE BEST BAND, AND NOT NECESSARILY YOUR FAVORITE. Thank you for participating.

Just to elaborate on that rather lacking Floyd bio...

Floyd will always be Roger Waters, Richard Wright, David Gilmour, Nick Mason and Syd Barrett - the first four names being the most important and recognised line-up.

Barrett became ill from LSD use so Gilmour replaced him as guitarist and singer while Waters and Gilmour took over the song writing. When Waters left in 1983 Gilmour, Mason and Wright continued as a trio.

Dark Side Of The Moon is not just their biggest selling album but also the third best selling album EVER! The Wall was a top selling album of the 80's and Another Brick In The Wall was their only no 1 hit single.

I've edited your post slightly so it reads better now...

The Wall was a top selling album of the 80's and Another Brick In The Wall was their only no 1 hit single because they were overrated. Also Pink Floyd couldn't hold a candle to Elvis and have already conceeded defeat via a press conference ealier today.

The Beatles vs. Paramore-LOL
Foo Fighters vs. The Ramones-The fact that it took so long for people to realize the greatness of the Ramones says something to me.
Nirvana vs. Frank Sinatra-Maybe I'm just too young to realize Sinatra's greatness or to naive to admit that he is better than Nirvana, but my vote still goes the other way.
Elvis vs. Pink Floyd-it's hard to argue against a band like Floyd, but Elvis is such a huge star - at least in America - that I have to vote for him here.

And just so you know, it must have taken me forever to write all of those bios as we had some votes in before the first round even started. If you would like, then you can re-post your picks as I officially announce each part of the bracket, just so that it is easier to keep track of.

Elvis was huge globally. I hated this pick as it was the hardest one for me (along with Maiden vs Aerosmith).

I went with Floyd purely because got a little lost in the shuffle during the 60's after such a meteoric start due to his army stint and film career getting in the way. Floyd pushed musical boundaries and brought an intelligence and meaning to the music and lyrics hitherto unseen at the time. As spiralling and experimental as their music was there was also something real about it that touched you deeply.

Elvis is probably more important overall for the birth of rock'n'roll and it's early popularity but if Elvis had been a songwriter as well, we could have got a true measure of his talent being being the greatest rock n roll singer and performer.

Otherwsie i would argue the case for Elvis almost any other time. wink.gif

The Beatles - Paramore: I know I'm gonna get beasted for this but I just never liked a single Beatles song! Before my time and just never got into it!

FooFs - The Ramones: A no contest in my book. The FFs got me into real music and I will always have a soft spot for them.

Nirvana - Sinatra: Similar to The Beatles pick. The only time I enjoyed Sinatra was when I was off my swede at my leavers ball and they played New York New York!

Elvis - Pink Floyd: Man am I dumping on some legends! Same deal, just not my thing. Dark Side Of The Moon however...smile

The Beatles (and most of my record collection) were before my time too but that doesn't mean a thing when it comes to enjoying the music.

70% of my music collection pre-dates me reaching back to the 70's, but, as much as I can respect what the did for music, I've just never enjoyed their music. It's hard to justify, but it simply has never been my thing. Give me Led Zep, The Who, The Boss, The Rolling Stones, old Santana stuff... love it but just never been into the 3 named acts! hmm

All of those acts bar Springsteen started in the 60's.... wink.gif

But as David said, this isn't about personal choice this is a exercise in objectivity so really, voting a new unknown group over the biggest pop group of all time is just a tad spurious, don't you think? smile.gif

A) For the millionth time this is not about personal preferences. Paramore will get anywhere close to the Beatles even if they last 50 years (which they won't).

B) for a budding songwriter you SHOULD listen to The Beatles and learn to play their stuff because you will learn something from them, even if it is not the style of music you play. trust me! wink.gif

Now I'm gonna get a load of crap for this but I'm not going to vote for something I dont like! Tony Blair was a very good politician, but I dont agree with his politics and thus I would never vote for him in my greatest politicians...

I kind of see Symph and Mollisons point. Who are we to say who is greatest? We're not experts, we vote for who we like. For instance, I voted for The Foo Fighters over The Ramones. Now, I'm sure The Ramones were a very influencial band, but the fact is I don't listen to them, whereas I do listen to and enjoy The Foo Fighters.

This is supposed to be a lighthearted vote MiB, otherwise Dave would have simply asked you who the greatest band of all time was, and you could have told us! wink

OK, now that you guys have battled it out about the first pairings, I am FINALLY back to give you the next pairings. Sorry that I've been gone for so long, but my life has been crazy these past few weeks. Hopefully I'll be able to continue through to see the end of this contest by the end of this year though! Here are the results from the first pairings:

The Beatles-6, Paramore-2
Foo Fighters-5, Ramones-3
Frank Sinatra-5, Nirvana-3
Elvis-5, Pink Floyd-3

Some interesting outcomes there. At least one of them was an upset.

And by the way Mib, how come I've never heard any non-Brit declare Pink Floyd the greatest band of all time? You mull over that and I'll work on the pairings and bios for the next round of voting.

OK, here are the next pairings:

Metallica vs. Stevie Wonder
Fleetwood Mac vs. U2
AC/DC vs. Black Sabbath/Ozzy Osbourne
KISS vs. The Clash

And the bios:

Metallica vs. Stevie Wonder
Metallica (James Hetfield, Lars Ulrich, Kirk Hammett, Robert Trujillo) is an American heavy metal band. They form in Los Angeles in 1981. Original bassist Cliff Burton was killed when their tour bus crashed in 1986, and was replaced by Jason Newstead, who eventually left the band before Trujillo took over in 2003. The band gained mainstream acceptance with the release of Metallica in 1991, but most hardcore fans maintain that 1986's Master of Puppets is their best album. Their hit songs include "Enter Sandman," "The One," and "Nothing Else Matters."

Stevie Wonder is an American singer, songwriter, and record producer. He was a prominent name in 20th Century pop music, and has won more Grammy Awards (25) than any other solo artist. He also has more than 30 top ten hits, including "Go Home," I Just Called to Say I Love You," and "That Girl." Wonder has been inducted into both the Rock and Roll and Songwriter's Halls of Fame.

Fleetwood Mac vs. U2
Fleetwood Mac (Mick Fleetwood, Stevie Nicks, John McVie, Christine McVie, Lindsey Buckingham) is a British rock band known for commercial success and high turnover. The only constant member of the band has been namesake drummer Mick Fleetwood. Their 1977 album Rumours is one of the best-selling of all-time (and my personal favorite). They have remained one of the most consistent bands over time, with hits like "The Chain," "Go Your Own Way," "Tusk," and "Dreams."

U2 (Bono, The Edge, Adam Clayton, Larry Multon Jr) is an Irish rock band known for activism and political messages in their songs. They were known more as an impressive live act until 1987's The Joshua Tree made them a superstar band. They are known for their anthemic sound and Bono's impassioned vocals. Hits include "With or Without You," "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For," and "Beautiful Day."

AC/DC vs. Black Sabbath
AC/DC (Angus Young, Malcom Young, Cliff Williams, Brian Johnson, Phil Rudd) is an Australian heavy metal band, formed in 1973 by brothers Angus and Malcolm Young. Former lead singer Bon Scott died in 1980, and the band considered disbanding before deciding on Brian Johnson as the new lead singer. They have been ranked by multiple sources as one of the top metal and rock bands of all-time, and Back in Black is the 5th-highest selling album in US history. Hits include "Back in Black," "She Shook Me All Night Long," and "Hells Bells." They were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2003.

Black Sabbath (Ozzy Osbourne, Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler, Bill Ward) is an English heavy metal band, formed in 1968. They are one of the most influential and successful hard rock bands of all time, and albums like 1981's Paranoid have helped them sell more than 100 million records worldwide. Hits include "Iron Man" and "Psycho Man." The lead vocalist position for the band has been a revolving door, with multiple vocalists holding the title, including Osbourne, Ronnie James Dio, Ian Gillan, David Donato, Glen Hughes, Ray Gillen, and Tony Martin.

KISS vs. The Clash
KISS (Paul Stanley, Gene Simmons, Ace Frehley, Paul Criss) is an American rock band formed in New York in 1973 that is known for their trademark face paint and elaborate live shows. They have been awarded 24 gold albums and have sold more the 90 million albums worldwide. Hits include "Detroit Rock City" and "Rock and Roll All Night."

The Clash (Joe Strummer, Mick Jones, Paul Simonon) were an English punk rock band, active from 1976-86. While they were known as a punk rock band, they were also known to experiment with various other genres of music throughout their active years. Hits include "London Calling" and "White Riot."

Metallica vs. Stevie Wonder
Fleetwood Mac vs. U2
AC/DC vs. Black Sabbath/Ozzy Osbourne
KISS vs. The Clash

-Stevie is a legend, but the music that Metallica has put out affects a lot more people. It's hard to argue with 25 Grammys, unless you have Metallica on your side.

-I've always respected U2, but their music has never seemed all that great to me. Fleetwood Mac, on the other hand, is a very underrated band and has put out a bunch of great stuff. Plus, Rumours is my favorite album of all-time.

-If Ozzy had stayed with Sabbath then I don't think this one would even be close. AC/DC has been consistent and is just plain better.

-I've never been a fan of KISS, but they are a great band. The Clash did a lot for punk music, but they weren't together for a long enough period of time to even be compared to KISS.

Metallica V Stevie Wonder: I'm a metal head so this is a no-brainer for me.
Fleetwood Mac V U2: A hard one this, gone off U2 recently but overall they just pip this one.
AC/DC V Ozzy/Sabbath: Ok this took ages to decide. I love both but AC/DC have been more consistent.
KISS V The Clash: Not really into punk and while KISS are pushing the envelope too much now I still much prefer them to The Clash.

(Dont think there's anything in there for MiB to get on his soapbox about!wink)

What is this - pick on MIB week? cry.gif

Anyway, my picks:

Metallica vs. Stevie Wonder - Stevie is considered a legend and is very influential in the 70's but I found him a little overrated. Metallica helped take metal to the masses when people thought it was dead...

Fleetwood Mac vs. U2 - Kind of hard but U2 have achieved a lot more in their time even though Bono has disappeared up his own arse...

AC/DC vs. Black Sabbath/Ozzy Osbourne - A real tough choice but AC/DC have been consistent whereas Sabbath keep breaking up and Ozzy is now a reality TV star.

KISS vs. The Clash - And not just because KISS are my favourite band either... wink.gif

AC/DC vs. Black Sabbath/Ozzy Osbourne
KISS

Metallica were the first band that got me into metal and although they've gone off the boil recently, they produced some classics.

U2 by default, never really got into Fleetwood Mac

Although AC/DC rock, The Sabbath started it all!

Kiss = Legends!

Here are the results from that round of voting:

Metallica-5, Stevie Wonder-2 (doesn't surprise me one bit)
U2-6, Fleetwood Mac-1 (a bit of an upset in my opinion, but what's that worth?)
AC/DC-4, Black Sabbath/Ozzy-3 (this was interesting to watch)
KISS-6, The Clash-1 (I'm not even sure it should have been this close)

Acts currently in the second round:

The Beatles, Foo Fighters, Frank Sinatra, Elvis, Metallica, U2, AC/DC, KISS

Be right back with the next set of matchups.

Led Zeppelin vs. Slayer
Red Hot Chili Peppers vs. Jimi Hendrix
Eric Clapton/Cream vs. Michael Jackson/Jackson 5
Rolling Stones vs. Megadeth

Led Zeppelin vs. Slayer

Led Zeppelin vs. Slayer
Red Hot Chili Peppers vs. Jimi Hendrix
Eric Clapton/Cream vs. Michael Jackson/Jackson 5
Rolling Stones vs. Megadeth

Slayer is a great band, but there is no way that they can compare to Zeppelin, a band that has a shot at winning the whole thing.

I'm a bigger fan of the Chilis, but it's impossible to ignore what Hendrix has done for music. He's one of the most talented of all-time.

This one took awhile for me to decide. But the fact that Clapton has been inducted into the R&RHOF thrice made the difference for me. He might not have as big of a name, but he's been consistent and is probably more talented than Jacko.

Megadeth is also great, but there are very few bands that can beat the Stones, even if I'm not that big of a fan.

Aerosmith vs. Iron Maiden - Maiden is one of the most successful metal bands, but Aerosmith is one of the most successful bands period. They defy any genre or age differences

The Eagles vs. Beach Boys - Great rock is more difficult to produce than great pop

Van Halen vs. Prince - The lead singers of Van Halen have always turned me away, and I just don't think that they are all that impressive other than Eddie

Queen vs. Alter Bridge - C'mon, it's QUEEN!
