OK, I'm not sure how many of you follow lists like this, but VH1 just finished showing the premeires of their 100 Greatest Songs of the 90s shows (now to see them on reruns a thousand times with the next month).
So you see that Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit" is number 1. I personally don't have a huge problem with this, but I'm sure that some of you might. There is no denying the impact that Nirvana had on 90s music, but their lyrics really didn't have any meaning (which they will admit to).
What are your thoughts on number one, as well as the rest of the list?
By the way, here is a good video of Nirvana playing the song live on Saturday Night Live:

This would be the US version of VH-1 judging by a) the huge American artist bias (meaning I've not heard of half of them) and b) the list is SO crap!
Come on Backstreet Boys at no 3? N Sync? Destiny's Child? WTF? That is quite simply the lamest , gayest, most ignorant list I have ever seen in my life on any subject ever.
That said, I'd like to see a UK version because the difference would be night and day!
Metallica made the cut which is good (Wrong song but it's still good) there were a few they missed out on. For instance
"Walk" by Pantera "A Tout Le Monde" by Megadeth "Everlong" by Foo Fighters "Affirmation" by Savage Garden "Killing in the Name" by Rage Against The Machine "The Song 2" by Blur
To name but a few, I think these lists always shun real artistry for mainstream horseshit anyway.
I think eventually we should come up with a TU top 100 of the past 25 years (Seeing as this site's key demographic are probably of that era) I imagine the logistics of it would be a pain in the ass but it would be cool to see what we all think.
I have to say, I'm with MiB on this one; that list was full of shit! I counted only 9 artists from outside of North America out of 100, which is a ridiculous ratio, not to mention conceited!
I like the idea of an Underground Top 100. I may look into trying to compile that in the new year, but you're right though, SoD, the logistics could be a pain in the ass, but I'll try and work it out! Leave it with me....

I couldn't agree more. I don't agree with most of the list. And the bands that I did agree with, they had the wrong song. There are a bunch of bands that didn't even make the cut:
Boyz II Men Foo Fighters Pantera Megadeth
The did seem to have a North American bias, but to be fair, this was a North American show on a North American channel. I'm not saying that makes it any better, but I don't think they were trying to get their viewers to say, "Who?" I think they were trying to rank the bands/artists most in the news/headlines. Otherwise, Britney Spears wouldn't have been in there. And I 100% disagree with Backstreet Boys at number 3.

Don't forget that since the 80's tracks = hit singles so a lot of the songs you guys suggested probably weren't big hit singles.
Unlike the days when album tracks like Stairway, Freebird, etc or non-charting hits that stood the test of time became classics and the fact that albums are more reliant on singles to push them (and usually are the only tracks people know), these lists are about as relevant and credible as a Big Fun reunion tour!!
in fairness all 6 of my picks were singles with videos and everything. But it's just like the american (And English) so suckle at the teet of normality. I swear these people couldn't think out of the box if they tried.
Yeah, VH1 used to be the standard for music in the US. But now they have a bunch of crap on the channel, and it's becoming more and more like MTV. I rarely watch the channel anymore.

You may be old enough to remember when MTV did that, but I'm only old enough to remember when VH1 did that. Being the huge music fan that I am, I used to watch that channel nonstop, but now they have all of this "Celeb-reality" crap on the channel with all of these D-list celebs that were D-list maybe ten years ago (i.e. Vanilla Ice, Flavor Flav, Bridgette Neilson), and the shows are terrible. And they just keep adding more and more spinoffs. Really, VH1 took the same path as MTV. The only thing is that I was alive (or conscious, at least) when VH1 made the transition.
VH1 is the MTV of the 2000s.

Man In Black wrote: The ones that do show non-stop music videos are run by paying viewers who phone or text in the number of their video of choice to get it played.
Yeah, the first time I saw one of these shows, I was like, "Why in the hell would I care about what videos everybody else wants to see?" Now, if I want to see a video, I find it one YouTube. Much better method...
