Nightmare on Elm Street Remake

Well with the chatter news last week that Elm Street is to be remade here comes the first piece of news to upset the die hard fans of the franchise....

Robert Englund's term as Freddy Krueger may have come to end.

Platinum Dunes and New Line rocked the horror world last week when the production entities announced they were working together to overhaul the "Nightmare on Elm Street" brand (full story here). A number of industry sources recently phoned in to shed some light on the early discussions going on behind-the-scenes regarding "Nightmare"...and none of them include Englund starring as Krueger.

The franchise facelift includes discovering a new actor to polish up the finger knives and play the iconographic dream role Englund has practically made his second skin since '84.

Disheartening news for the fans, maybe, but rumor has it Michael Bay's Platinum Dunes is taking "Nightmare" back to square one...as in fresh start, hitting the reset button, making it their own (think "Texas Chainsaw Massacre" '03 and Friday the 13th '09). Because of this decision, they'd like to find another actor to carry the new Krueger into future films.

Again, early talks. Script-wise, nothing can be sealed up until the WGA strike meets an end...and it sounds like that may be sooner than later.

No one could pull that off well. Except maybe Luke Chadwick...

Filmstalker has some casting news:

Michael Bay's production company is producing a remake of A Nightmare on Elm Street. And now a rumour has appeared about a potential replacement as Freddy Krueger. It's none other than Billy Bob Thornton.

I'm still dubious about a remake of Nightmare on Elm Street, Thornton might just work though.

The original Freddy Krueger, Robert Englund was quoted on a radio show talking about the last rumour he had heard on casting for the Nightmare on Elm Street remake. He says Billy Bob Thornton was the name rumoured to be in line to play Krueger. The news comes from Jo Blo.

Apparently Englund isn't against the idea of being replaced, or the idea of the film being remade. I can't say I'm overly excited. What about you, are you looking forward to the remake? Do you reckon Thornton would be a good choice

Hmmm, not really seen him in a role that intense. I like some of his stuff but wonder if he could carry such a iconic character. Mind you, anyone who can put up with Jolie AND wear her blood must have a sadistic side!

Isn't he just the wrong person entirely? Englunds not that old, he could still carry it. Unless he's dead then it should behim. Or you could use SAWs Tobin Bell.
