The original film featured Jane Fonda as an intergalactic sex-kittenA remake of the cult 1960s science-fiction film Barbarella is in development, according to reports. Original producer Dino De Laurentiis has secured the rights to remake the 1968 film, which starred Jane Fonda. De Laurentiis told trade paper Variety that Barbarella was the "ultimate science-fiction adventure heroine: smart, strong, funny and sexy". Casino Royale writers Robert Wade and Neal Purvis will pen the script. No release date has been announced. The original film, based on Frenchman Jean-Claude Forest's comic-book creation, was a box-office flop but has since acquired cult status. The rights deal, with Jean-Claude's son Julien, will also see the reissue of the first two Barbarella books, along with the publication of material previously unreleased in English.
Legendary Italian film-maker De Laurentiis has produced a string of Hollywood blockbusters including the 1976 remake of King Kong and, most recently, the Hannibal Lecter sequels Hannibal and Red Dragon.
Aparrantly the Role of Barbarella is to be played by.... Halle Berry............ NOOOOOOooooooooooooooooooooo
What's wrong with Halle Berry? She's hot! Forty and fit! Or do the memories of Catwoman still haunt you?
I was actually afraid that they were going to cast Jessica Alba in the role when I saw the headline. I mean, she's hot too but she's also so very bland...
To be honest, I don't really rate many of today's Hollywood babes so I couldn't really think of anyone suited to the role. Perhaps there is a newbie out there waiting to be discovered who could take the role? Plus can anyone really follow in Jane Fonda's footseps?
Halle Berry cannont hold a candle to Jane Fonda in this role. (And not just Catwoman but her XMen interview too.)
I don't know who it should be really... Needs to someone ditzy but sassy. SO Scarlett Johansson or a Kirsten Dunst type. It's all about the beginning credits really.
Rodriguez will remake Barbarella The original was directed by Jane Fonda's then-husband Roger Vadim Sin City director Robert Rodriguez is to make a new film version of cult sci-fi classic Barbarella. The original film, based on Frenchman Jean-Claude Forest's comic book, starred Jane Fonda as the titular mercenary and intergalactic sex-kitten. "The possibilities are limitless," said Rodriguez. "I love this iconic character and all that she represents." Original producer Dino De Laurentiis is in charge of the remake, which is due to be released by Universal next year. "Barbarella is the ultimate science-fiction adventure heroine - smart, strong and sexy," De Laurentiis said in a statement. "In our vision, the future is female, and I can't wait to introduce Barbarella to a new generation of moviegoers." Rodriguez is in Cannes with Quentin Tarantino to promote Grindhouse Casino Royale screenwriters Neal Purvis and Robert Wade are working on the script. The original film was a box office flop but has since achieved cult status, constantly referred to in pop culture. It was directed by Fonda's then-husband Roger Vadim and became infamous for the opening scene, where Fonda undresses in zero gravity. Kylie Minogue recreated the iconic sequence in the video for her 1994 single Put Yourself In My Place. Pop group Duran Duran also named themselves after a character in the film. Comic reissue Barbarella first appeared in a French graphic magazine written and illustrated by Jean-Claude Forest in 1962, and her adventures have been published around the world. De Laurentiis has secured the rights to the cartoon creation from Jean-Claude's son Julien. The deal will also see the first two Barbarella books be reissued, along with the publication of material previously unreleased in English. Robert Rodriguez recently collaborated with Quentin Tarantino on the horror movie double-bill Grindhouse. After disappointing returns at the US box office, the directors will see their movie split in two for the UK. Tarantino's half, Death Proof, is scheduled to reach cinemas on 21 September. Rodriguez's segment, Planet Terror, is yet to receive a release date.
Yes, another classic in Barbarella is to resurface as the drought of fresh ideas coming from Hollywood continues.
Some may be pleased to learn however that Jessica Alba will assume the title role originally made famous by Jane Fonda in 1968. The role was supposed to go to Rose McGowan but she split up with director Robert Rodriguez, so he looked elsewhere for his leading lady.
I wonder if they will replicate the famous shower scene? Or indeed the famous sexy outfits:
And IF Jessica Alba is to indeed reinact the opening scene I for one will be buying a months supply of tickets.....
Although somehow I can't see her doing it due her no nudity clause she puts in contracts. Maybe now she lost all her diginity as mothers do when giving birth, she'll have changed her mind. Hopefully.
I thought we had a Barbarella thread somewhere already?? ++EDIT++ We did so i merged the threads...
