Sherlock Holmes - Guy Ritchie/Downey Jr.
Permalink Closed

Looks like there is another Sherlock Holmes rendition happening except this one is more  of a serious version being directed by Guy Ritchie and starring Robert Downey Jr.

In what will be his first job since the blockbuster "Iron Man," Robert Downey Jr. is set to star in "Sherlock Holmes," the drama that Guy Ritchie will direct for Warner Bros.

Downey committed to the pic, which begins shooting in October, after Ritchie turned in a polish of the latest version of the script, written by Anthony Peckham.

Joel Silver, Lionel Wigram, Susan Downey and Dan Lin are producing.

Downey emerged as an action star with "Iron Man" and "Sherlock Holmes" also will take advantage of his physical skills as the character displays brawn as well as brains.

The basis for the film is Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's classic tales, but also the comicbook "Sherlock Holmes."

With Downey aboard, the film will go into production before a comedy that just coalesced at Columbia Pictures, with Sacha Baron Cohen playing Holmes, and Will Ferrell playing his crime-fighting partner Dr. Watson.

Columbia is fast tracking its project, which is being written by Etan Cohen ("Tropic Thunder") and produced by Judd Apatow and Jimmy Miller.

Downey next will be seen in "Tropic Thunder," and then stars with Jamie Foxx in the Joe Wright-directed "The Soloist" for DreamWorks. He'll reprise his Tony Stark role in Iron Man 2 for Marvel Studios and Paramount, with Jon Favreau directing.

Somehow I can't see Sherlock Holmes as a cockney wide boy gangster wannabe - that is all that Ritchie does isn't it?

From Filmstalker - Downey Jr talks Sherlock Holmes & Iron Man 2:

Robert Downey Jr. has been talking about two of his upcoming films, Iron Man 2 directed by Jon Favreau and Sherlock Holmes directing by Guy Ritchie.

He reveals that Iron Man 2 may actually contain some other Marvel heroes and will be a definite lead on to an Avengers film, and that his Sherlock Holmes will be a martial artist.

Yeah, that's what I thought! Commenting about the film he reveals:

'Watsonits all there. The cool thing about Sherlock Holmes was hes actually a very skilled martial artist. So its going to have elements of thatits not just his deduction and all that stuff. Its going to be a very action-packed version of that. To me its really exciting...

...I love the idea of martial arts and bare-knuckle boxingbefore the Queensbury rules, where it was all kind of proper, it was this real balls-to-the-wall, brutal type stuff. Guy Ritchies a martial artist, and martial arts studentso were going to have a real fun time doing all that.'

Those comments come through IESB.

Wow, Sherlock Holmes the bare knuckled boxer and martial artist?! Well they do say that the original stories had him portrayed as more of a fighter than we see in the television portrayals of the character, although he was as intelligent as our modern Holmes.

I'm torn on this one and I'm really unsure which way it will go. It does have the opportunity to be a complete disaster, but then again, it might just work.

Robert Downey Jr. has also been talking about the Iron Man (Filmstalker review) sequel, Iron Man 2. It's tough being a titling guy I'm sure. He's talking about some of the cameos, and he comes out and openly says that Iron Man 2 is setting things up for the Avengers film.

When asked over at Latino Review if there are going to be any cameos he responded:

'Ya, it's a big world. It's kind of hard to navigate because you want to be able to set up The Avengers in Iron Man 2...before we were grounded in reality and now we're starting to go into the Marvel Universe.'

He does say an absolute no to the appearance of Hulk in the film, but when asked about Captain America or Thor he states that he can neither confirm nor deny it and that nothing is set in stone. Now that sounds like they are considering the idea, and I could see Captain America making an appearance in a film like this.

In both interviews Downey Jr. talks about the story going in a direction slightly away from the first film, and that they're going to do something a little more risky in order to develop the character in the second film, although it will be more of the same.

So far I like what's being said about Iron Man 2, but I really do hope that they do something with a little more meat than the first film. I think The Dark Knight will have shown them that they could do something a little darker than the first and be successful.

More talk from Guy Ritchie via Filmstalker:

What's most interesting about Guy Ritchie talking of his upcoming Sherlock Holmes film is how much emphasis he's placing on the character of Holmes. Now that's nothing new for a Sherlock Holmes film, after all he is the lead, but for a Guy Ritchie film it's a little different.

He's moving away from his previous arena of London gangsters and intricate plots filled with characters stuck in improbable situations out with their control, and from what he says to a vey unbusy film concentrating on one character.

I do think that this project is beginning to sound really interesting, it already was with Robert Downey Jr. taking the lead, but what Guy Ritchie is now saying about his Sherlock Holmes is even more interesting.

'It will be a very big production, visceral and intellectual...His intellect was as much of a curse as it was a blessing...He was a deeply layered character.'

See now that really is intriguing and suggests that it'll be a huge character piece, something which would be interesting to see from Ritchie.

However there's still that dull ache of a warning around the action side of this new Sherlock Holmes, and Ritchie brings this up again in the story in the USA Today article through SuperheroHype:

'His brilliance will percolate into the action'

It's this new level of action that has a concern for me, and I know that we're going back to the original character, but I don't want to lose everything that the Holmes we've accepted as the character was about.

There's also a concern that this Holmes will turn into a bit of an action hero, and I really do hope that it doesn't go all out to an action hero type film.

Now to be fair to Guy Ritchie and the film he's saying some really positive and interesting things about the character, that he's going to retain that intelligence, bring back some of the original writing, and concentrate on the characterisation of the story.

That does sound good, as long as the action doesn't take centre stage then Robert Downey Jr. could make this shine and we could well see the best Guy Ritchie film yet.

Another day, another rumour according to Filmstalker:

I'm a bit confused as Guy Ritchie himself had apparently already said that Mark Strong was going to be the villain up against Robert Downey Jr.'s Sherlock Holmes in his new film, so the new rumour that Russell Crowe is in talks for the villain of the piece means either the Ritchie comment was false, the new rumour is false, or there's going to be two villains in the film.

It's not hard to believe that there could be two villains for Holmes to go up against, particularly if the main villain has his own sidekick, as Holmes himself does.

The rumour comes from The Sun, the British daily gossip newspaper, through Flicks Newsin which the reporter states that:

'A movie insider told me: 'Russell wants the part, Guy wants Russell. All theyve got left to do is dot the is and cross the ts.' '

So being cynical, there is no deal with him, and being even more cynical, it's one of those 'movie insiders', which could mean anything from the local cinema popcorn seller to someone actually involved in the casting process of Sherlock Holmes with Guy Ritchie.

Personally I like the Mark Strong idea much better than Russell Crowe, and also that news is reported to have come from the mouth of the director himself at the BFI Movies-Con, not an inside source.

However Crowe versus Robert Downey Jr. might be an interesting battle of the big names on screen, but regardless of what's been said I really do like Mark Strong and I hope he gets such a big role.

Filmstalker with another "Russell Crowe in Sherlock" update:

Surprise, Russell Crowe isn't Dr. Watson in the new Sherlock Holmes film from Guy Ritchie, and the warning signs were there, the anonymous source, the British gossip paper, and the fact that he would be too big a star next to Robert Downey Jr.'s Holmes.

The announcement comes from none other than Guy Ritchie himself who has revealed that he hasn't cast anyone and it would seem hasn't even talked to Crowe about the film.

Speaking at the premiere of RocknRolla he said:

'I don't have a Watson...Somebody just told me that I have Russell Crowe lined up but that's news to me. I suspect that hasn't happened and I'm still looking for my Watson.'

However time is running out on picking a cast according to Empire who have the comments. Still Guy Ritchie. is positive about the production of Sherlock Holmes:

'Good, I'm very happy about it. We've got what I'd like to think are some of the best locations in London and with this film I get to show a whole new side to London. I've done contemporary and now I won't be doing that, obviously.'

There's still the rumour that Mark Strong is to play the bad guy, and actually that's much more than a rumour as Ritchie apparently confirmed it himself.

Robert Downey Jr. has also been talking about his role and said of the Sherlock Holmes story that:

'The world is within all the stories and it actually goes back to the books but the story is actually one that we made for the movie...What we can tell you is that he's a badass in this movie alright. That's what we're going back to, any Holmes fan that we've spoken to is getting really excited about this one.'

This is sounding very interesting, and I'm really glad the Russell Crowe casting was just a rumour, not for the actor himself, but just because having a presence as big as Downey in the role might have created the wrong dynamic.

More casting news from Filmstalker:

The rumours are racing about the casting for Guy Ritchie's Sherlock Holmes, we've heard that Russell Crowe is in talks for just about every role and debunked, and now we're hearing that Jude Law is the latest to be linked by the media with the important role of Sherlock Holmes' sidekick, Doctor Watson.

Now this one I could believe more than Crowe as Law is much less likely to compete for screen presence with Robert Downey Jr.

It would mean that the main character on screen, and the one that your eyes are drawn to, is Robert Downey Jr., and although Jude Law is a good actor, he just isn't the huge personality on screen that Downey or Crowe are.

The latest rumour for the new version of Sherlock Holmes, which is actually revisiting some of the oldest material for the character, comes from EW and tells us nothing to back the story up other than the article saying that they've learned he's in negotiations.

You know the more I think about that casting choice the more I like it. What do you think? Could Jude Law play a good Dr. Watson? Or is this getting as bad as the Batman 3 rumours?

Jude Law is a good actor???
