From the same Disney showcase that brought us news of Cars 2, comes news of three new roles for Johnny Depp. He will be in a Lone Ranger film, will star in another Pirates of the Caribbean and he's in Alice in Wonderland.
Not so much a Disney showcase as a Johnny Depp showcase. The Lone Ranger one came out if the blue...
Johnny Depp will be a busy man, having just announced three new films at the Disney showcase. Apparently he took to the stage in a Jack Sparrow outfit, and was wearing a Lone Ranger mask. The reason for that is Depp will be playing Tonto in a Lone Ranger film.
Not only that but he has signed up for Pirates of the Caribbean 4, which along with the Lone Ranger film is produced by Jerry Bruckheimer. And to top it all off, he also confirmed that he will be playing The Mad Hatter in Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland. The news originally broke a couple of months ago.
So there you go, Depp will be playing all three of those. I wonder who will be playing The Lone Ranger. Are you excited about more Pirates of the Caribbean? Looking forward to Depp as Tonto?
Do we REALLY need Pirates 4? And can the Lone Ranger work in 2008?
Of course and of course. Pirates 4 will work if we stick with Jack and not with Orlando and Keira.
The Lone Ranger could be cool as well. There's not been a big screen outing for him so Zorro was reasonably sucessful so I can't see why the Ranger wouldn't be too. They also forgot to mention the strong possibility of him as The Riddler in the next Batman movie too...
It’s been one hell of a 24 hour period for Jonathan Aibel, Glenn Berger and Jack Black.
Yesterday, it was announced that the Aibel/Berger combo would be writing an action comedy vehicle for their Kung Fu Panda star, Black, in which he would play an amnesiac who thinks he’s a top secret agent.
And today, DreamWorks Animation confirmed that they’ll also be reteaming on Kung Fu Panda 2, the sequel to this year’s unexpected smash hit.
The visually stunning and surprisingly funny CG comedy grossed over $600 million at the worldwide box office this summer – and so it seemed only a matter of time before a sequel was confirmed. And lo, it’s already marked out a date: June 3, 2011.
There’s no word yet on plot details, but Black has been confirmed to return as the lovable protagonist, Po, while Angelina Jolie – who voiced Tigress – is also set to come back. Deals haven’t yet been concluded for the rest of the first film’s voice talent, including Dustin Hoffman (Shifu), Jackie Chan (Monkey) and Seth Rogen (Mantis), but we’d expect them to come on board officially very soon.
With Mark Osborne and John Stevenson moving onto other projects. Jennifer Yu Helson will move up to assume sole directorial responsibility for the film, which will be released in 3D.
We’ve got mixed feelings about this, to be honest. We really liked the first one – it was an enormous and very welcome surprise – and we hope that this sequel can deliver on the quirky characters, and astonishing action setpieces of the original, and that it’s not just a cynical cash-in that will milk the franchise dry. But – hey! – when has Hollywood ever done that?
Aparantly Steven Segal is hawking around the idea for Under Siege 3. Which he'd like to be all futuristic in tone and possibly include aliens according to various movie sources.
Since the most recent Indiana Jones film was released, there have been rumours that a fifth film was possible. Now Harrison Ford says that it isn't impossible, and that George Lucas is thinking about a new adventure.
Last we heard Lucas was talking about how much more difficult the last one was, having to take two other opinions into account. Will he work the same way again?
Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (Filmstalker review), reunited Harrison Ford, Steven Spielberg and George Lucas. At the time there were rumours that Shia LaBeouf might be the future of the franchise. Then Lucas cleared things up, saying that Indiana Jones needed Harrison Ford.
Now Harrison Ford says that Lucas is contemplating a fifth film in the series. He was talking to The Los Angeles Times.
It's crazy but great. George is in think mode right now. It's automatic, really, we did well with the last one and with that having done well and been a positive experience, it's not surprising that some people want to do it again.
Some people, hmmm. George Lucas recently hinted at some difficulties making the last one. Mostly due to the fact that he couldn't just forge ahead with his own ideas like the original. That Ford and Spielberg wanted to be consulted and involved more in the process. He even went so far as to say that he and Spielberg, wanted Indiana Jones to go in opposite directions. Lucas wanted to move forward, while Spielberg wanted the films to be more like the previous films.
I wonder if Spielberg will want to be involved, if Lucas is insistent in going in another direction? Ford says though that the drive for the new one is coming from Lucas.
Really, it comes from the ethos, from the ether. It's natural. It's a way of nature, of course, success breed opportunities ... also we don't stay as closely in contact as have in the last year, that's part of it.
Don't count on seeing Ford involved in any animated Indy film though, should Lucas take the franchise the way of Star Wars.
I'm not philosophically against doing animation roles but not for Indiana Jones. I'd hate to see it reduced in any way from the movies that we have done and the way we have done them.
It will be interesting to see if Spielberg is involved in it, if Lucas wants to drastically change the tone of the films. Do you want another Indiana Jones film? And if so, should it stay old school like Spielberg prefers, or should we see a more modern Indy?
So far all the news we have on Pirates of the Caribbean 4, is that Johnny Depp is going to be back. Now rumours are out about a potential director, should Gore Verbinski be busy with Bioshock. And it's Tim Burton.
Not only that but some rumours about potential storylines are out. And it could involve Russell Brand, Richard will be pleased.
Johnny Depp is coming back for Pirates of the Caribbean 4, and rumours are already out on the film. Cinema Blend, through Jo Blo, say that should Gore Verbinski be tied up, Tim Burton could well direct. I suppose it's an easy connection to make, Depp and Burton team up a lot. I wonder that Burton would do with a Pirates film.
The next rumour, also to be taken with a pinch of salt, revolves around the plot. It could be that in the next film Jack Sparrow will have a brother. And he could be played by either Sacha Baron Cohen or Russell Brand.
So there we go. All rumour at this stage, but what do you think. Would a new director and the new character be good news for the Pirates franchise?
