Battlestar Galactice prequel: Caprica

Filmstalker:

We already know that there's going to be prequel film called Caprica that is most likely going to be picked up as a series, but now there's talk of a prequel film that's going to start just before the events in the television series we're almost finished watching.

The word is that this series is going to look back to the Cylons and concentrate on them, on their plans to destroy the humans and how they struggled once they discovered that there were so many survivors.

The press release from the SciFi Channel tells us, and there are a few hints at spoilers here if you haven't yet seen the conclusion of Battlestar Galactica series three:

Spoiler

The plan for this film is that it will be shown on television and then released on DVD, as was the previous film Battlestar Galactica: Razor. That may well be the plan for Caprica too.

This new film will be directed by Edward James Olmos aka Admiral Adama, who will also appear in front of the camera, and there have been confirmations for Michael Trucco aka Sam Anders, Aaron Douglas aka Chief Tyrol and Dean Stockwell aka the Cylon Cavil.

Over at the Chicago Tribune Blog they have the story and reveal that some of the stars are asking a little more than they previously were, which is really no surprise considering their success.

Galactica Sitrep had the rumour that Michael Hogan aka Tigh, Katee Sackhoff aka Starbuck and Grace Park aka Athena/Boomer are all being pursued for the film, however since the film is so closely tied with the events of the first series I would imagine that just about the full compliment of leads would be on board, don't you?

It was the LA Times Blog that had the story that some of the additional cast members may be asking for more money, but Mark Stern, Executive Vice President of original programming for Sci Fi, said:

'The cast are lovely...That's not to say we're not getting phone calls from their agents saying, 'They're huge now.' And we're respectful of that. We're not expecting anyone to do it because they owe us. There are actors that have come to some prominence; they're helping us out because they want to do it.'

I think that really is trying to make a media story out of standard practice. When I was a contractor, outside Filmstalker, whenever my contract came up I would negotiate more, and sometimes that meant playing hardball as they said, sometimes not. You negotiate for what you think you are worth in the marketplace, no big surprise really.

It does seem as though there's plenty of life after Battlestar Galactica, Caprica and this new film, will it keep going?

I think for me this new film is the one I'm most interested in, the Caprica film will go back to the birth of the two warring families and the start of the Cylon programme, but really the idea of viewing the events of the first series from the view of the Cylons would be really interesting. In fact perhaps viewing a few of the key series from the Cylon perspective would be fascinating. Could we see a few more such films?
