Since Superman Returns was released, a sequel has been a long time coming. Not much has been heard, other than the odd bit of news. Now Warner Bros say they plan to start again with Superman.
It sure has taken them a while to decide. They also plan to go down the Marvel route, and release individual films for DC superheroes.
Not long ago we heard that Warner Bros were planning some changes in how they dealt with DC comic book heroes. With the success of The Dark Knight, Warner and DC seem to changing their tact slightly. The first to get the new treatment may well be Superman.
Warner Bros. Pictures Group President Jeff Robinov, spoke to The Wall Street Journal, through Coming Soon. He seems to be the man behind Warners new approach, including the last two Batman films. He says a Batman vs Superman film is off for the minute, and hints that we will be seeing a reboot for Superman.
'Superman didn't quite work as a film in the way that we wanted it to. It didn't position the character the way he needed to be positioned. Had Superman worked in 2006, we would have had a movie for Christmas of this year or 2009. But now the plan is just to reintroduce Superman without regard to a Batman and Superman movie at all.'
Robinov is keen to keep the darker tone of The Dark Knight in the new films, that includes a new Superman film.
'We're going to try to go dark to the extent that the characters allow it.'
Does that mean Bryan Singer is off the sequel? Could they be talking about one of these pitches? Robinov has plans to release individual films for characters before going down the road of a Justice League film, which makes sense. Looks like Warner Bros. are taking a steer from Marvel, establishing film versions of single characters before bringing them together. More details of their plans will be out in the next month, and a third Batman film is part of the plan.
Let's hope they manage to make as good a job of them as The Dark Knight. Marvel might have some heavy competition. Looking forward to a rebooted Superman? Would a Batman vs Superman film interest you?
Hmmm....will a darker Superman work? Batman does because his character was born out of revenge but Superman was always the quintessential good guy.
Over a month ago the Superman reboot was confirmed. And it left a lot of unanswered questions. Would Bryan Singer be back? Would a new Superman be cast?
Well now one of the those questions seems to have been answered. The reboot of Superman, might yet still star Brandon Routh.
Usually when something is totally rebooted, they recast the main character. Unless someone is famous for making that role. Sylvester Stallone in Rocky, Bruce Willis in Die Hard. But after one lukewarm outing as Superman, we could be seeing Brandon Routh back as the superhero in a rebooted Superman.
Latino Review caught up with Paul Levitz, President of DC Comics. And he has this to say when asked what was happening with the new Superman film.
'Last week Brandon Routh has come around the offices in New York and Los Angeles as of late to talk about Superman and what we want to do.'
Seems everyone at involved really liked Routh, and thinks he still has a lot to offer Superman. Maybe they think he didn't get the best of films to work with? They also quizzed him on Batman 3, and that film will determine what happens with Superman.
'Everyone is waiting for Nolan to sign on for another Batman, once that happens, the release date for Superman and all other future projects will follow.'
The release schedule could look like this if DC have their way. Green Lantern would be out in Summer 2010, Batman 3 would be in Summer 2011, and the Superman reboot would follow the next summer in 2012.
So a reboot, but perhaps with the same star. Would you be happy if Brandon Routh was still Superman? Would a change in tone, or a different approach be enough? Or do you want an all new Superman, literally?
I thought Brandon Routh was excellent in Superman Returns one of the highlights. The likeness to CHristopher Reeves was uncanny. If you change up too much you are admitting the previous film was a failure. Which It wasn't. Not brilliant for sure and nowhere near as good as I or II, but still very good.
