Despite being 3 years old, this is due for release on October 24th although it's bound to be a limited release only...
No, it's not a misprint. The title of Takeshi Kitano's splendid new film is indeed in the plural, and does indeed denote possession without indicating what is possessed.
The working title was Fractal, which suggests the kind of ideas in play: this is a splintered narrative, densely populated with doppelgängers and tripelgängers, which explores alternative realities and possibilities. Insofar as it has a centre, it centres on two Takeshi Kitanos, one a successful TV star, the other a bum who accidentally discovers his resemblance to the star and trades on it by trying for a career on the fringes of showbiz. But these two are surrounded by many other doubles and triples as the multiplying storylines fracture into a world of infinite chances and choices.
And the only fixed points in this dizzying illusion are, ironically, two iconic figures who combine alternative possibilities and identities within one body: Japan's most famous female-impersonator chanteuse Akihiro Miwa (formerly Maruyama, friend of Mishima, the original Black Lizard) and her younger confrere Daigoro Tachibana (the transvestite geisha in Zatoichi).
In short, Kitano has responded to the global success of Zatoichi by making his most 'experimental' film yet: a sunny pleasure dome with caves of ice.
I actually have this and bought it on dvd over there in japan but i couldnt understand the story due to the fact it had no english subs! But Takeshi is awesome and the film is pretty good so its something you should check out Mib.
Its pretty much impossible when i buy them in shops over there mib! Some of them have english subs, others dont,a majority of the animes never have english subs so i have quite a lot of them which untill my japanese gets better from my study, ill never have the chance to comprehend!
Forgive my ignorance but how about reading the cover to see if there are subs on the DVDs? Or ask a native (one of your friends or the shop assistant) to read the covers for you?
Mib sorry i forgot to mention that it doesnt usually say on the back in english and sadly most of the lovely assistants there cant speak english, usually i do shopping for dvds myself as my gf hates me wasting my money on them so i couldnt bring her along and my friends well, they could but i dont like to bother them with coming dvd shopping with me ;)..
So - get your girlfriend to teach you the Japanese for "are there English subtitles on this DVD?" or get her to teach you read the Kanji for "English subtitles".
