Well I find it hard to believe, but apparently a script for Ghostbusters 3 is underway. Just yesterday we heard from Dan Aykroyd who actually addressed a set of rumours about the writers on the project and said they were false, of course that was for Seth Rogen and Judd Apatow, a story that the Interflab leapt on and made a sign that the film was on.
However today news comes out today that a script is underway with Lee Eisenberg and Gene Stupnitsky, executive producers on the U.S. version of The Office, writing the new story.
Of course there are problems that still lie in the way, and the big one is getting the original cast to sign onto the film, although to be honest that won't stop Hollywood making a third film unless there's a piece of paper out there that says they can't without the original cast, or at least the original creator's go ahead.
It's been said before by Dan Ackroyd himself that Bill Murray is the stumbling block for getting the film going, and that he was never going to return to a live action Ghostbusters, but he would lend his voice to a CGI version. Frankly I don't know why, it's not like his career has taken off in a different direction or anything, sure it's gone another way, but he's not become known as a thespian all of a sudden!
Columbia is apparently the studio, but Variety say they won't comment or confirm that it's happening, so I'm still sceptical it will go ahead. There is no deal yet with any cast members and the article states that the previous sticking points were over hard cash and percentage returns, basically too much was being asked for by the cast and the studio dropped the plans.
I don't see why that would have changed, and I also don't see any confirmations of where the story came from or how they know considering the parties involved are keeping quiet.
Maybe Lee Eisenberg and Gene Stupnitsky are writing the film, but it's got a long way to go before something is made, and there are a huge number of stumbling blocks in the way. I'm still very sceptical, even if they did write Year One and The Office.
I'd love this to happen, It's Bill Murray who has always said no and being that it revolved around him pretty much it would be a bit hard to do it. Unless Venkman had died and he was the main Ghost villian causing all the problems... or even the ghost of Templeton Peck... Oh and here is the original report from Variety.
Columbia Pictures is getting serious about scaring up a new installment of its blockbuster "Ghostbusters" franchise. The studio has set "The Office" co-exec producers Lee Eisenberg and Gene Stupnitsky to write a script for a film designed to bring back together the original cast of Harold Ramis, Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd and Ernie Hudson.
Studio would not comment on the development and has been mum on recent rumors that there was interest in making another installment of the franchise.
The scribes just wrote "Year One," a comedy that was directed by Ramis. Ramis with Aykroyd wrote the first two installments of the films. Ivan Reitman directed both the 1984 original and the sequel that was released in 1989. The close proximity between the writers and original Ghostbuster Ramis is evidence that the ghost chasers have sparked to the idea of returning.
"Ghostbusters" was Columbia's highest grossing film ever, until it was beaten by "Men in Black" and then "Spider-Man." An attempt to make a third installment of the franchise was stymied in the dealmaking stage. Sources said so much gross was pledged to the participants that it was next to impossible for the studio to make any money on a third installment.
No deals will be made with the original cast until the script is ready, but the gross percentage will certainly be an issue. Sony has a standing policy not to allow more than 25% of first dollar gross out the door.
The scribes, who are Emmy- nominated for their work on "The Office," just set up another picture at Columbia, selling their spec script "Bad Teacher" to the studio for Jimmy Miller to produce.
Now Harold Ramis is adding weight to the rumours with this from AICN:
Harold Ramis just emailed the Chicago Tribune’s Mark Caro about the status of the “Ghostbusters III” project, currently being scripted by "The Office" writers Gene Stupnitsky and Lee Eisenberg. The bit about Judd Apatow -- who worked with Ramis, Stupnitsky and Eisenberg on next summer's Jack Black period comedy "Year One" -- would seem to imply that some of Apatow’s ever-expanding rep company (Seth Rogen? Paul Rudd? Sacha Baron Cohen? Will Ferrell?) might play Junior Ghostbusters alongside the Ramis, Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd and Ernie Hudson characters:
yes, columbia is developing a script for GB3 with my year one writing partners, gene stupnitsky and lee eisenberg. judd apatow is co-producing year one and has made several other films for sony, so of course the studio is hoping to tap into some of the same acting talent. aykroyd, ivan reitman and i are consulting at this point, and according to dan, bill murray is willing to be involved on some level. he did record his dialogue for the new ghostbusters video game, as did danny and i, and ernie hudson. the concept is that the old ghostbusters would appear in the film in some mentor capacity. not much else to say at this point. everyone is confident a decent script can be written and i guess we'll take it from there. best, harold
That's right, the original Ghostbusters cast will appear in the third film, but they will be appearing as mentors and merely be passing the jobs over to a younger cast who will no doubt be taking the franchise forward with a younger audience.
This is the worst news possible for Ghostbusters fans, of course if you've never seen the original cast then you'll probably not care, but for fans this is terrible.
Harold Ramis is the one who confirms that the original cast will be back merely to mentor the new Ghostbusters team, and he does so in an email to The Chicago Tribune through Latino Review. In it he says:
'yes, columbia is developing a script for GB3 with my year one writing partners, gene stupnitsky and lee eisenberg. judd apatow is co-producing year one and has made several other films for sony, so of course the studio is hoping to tap into some of the same acting talent. aykroyd, ivan reitman and i are consulting at this point, and according to dan, bill murray is willing to be involved on some level. he did record his dialogue for the new ghostbusters video game, as did danny and i, and ernie hudson. the concept is that the old ghostbusters would appear in the film in some mentor capacity.'
Oh dear me, that sounds terrible. The original cast will be there to hand over to a cast of Superbad/Knocked Up who, as I've said before, will be spouting the usual slapstick, sexual and bodily function humour. Great.
There goes the humour of Ghostbusters, and the fans finally get their third film which will effectively kill the series for them and restart it as a young and trendy series fitting in with the current spate of comedies coming out of Hollywood.
The words from Harold Ramis confirm the story we'd heard before about the new writers and the possible involvement of Seth Rogen and Judd Apatow, and they don't even seem that solid on how much time we'll see of the original Ghostbusters on screen.
Bill Murray has been talking a bit more about a Ghostbusters 3 film. He recently hinted that he might be interested in starring in a new film. And he has reiterated some of those comments again.
Momentum keeps building for this one, will they all get together at some stage?
Bill Murray recently talked about the new script being written for Ghostbusters 3, and how disappointed he was with Ghostbusters 2. He has talked about a third film again, and still sounds positive.
'The third one could happen. There's two fellows from The Office that are writing a script, but I've yet to see it. And I'm more involved with, you know, trying to get the dessert we ordered at lunch than I am with the new Ghostbusters sequel. But it's possible. It's a great idea that they hired these two guys to do it, because I think it'll be a ... it could be a fresh look at it. And it could be funny.'
A mixture of coulds and possibles there. But atleast he's open to the idea. He's not quite so positive when talking about Ghostbusters 2.
'We did a sequel, and it was sort of rather unsatisfying for me, because the first one to me was the goods. It was the real thing. And the sequel, you know, was ... it was a few years later. There was an idea pitched. And it was like, well, they got us all together in a room. We just laughed for a couple of hours. And then they said, 'What if we did another one? Here's an idea. So they had this idea, but it didn't turn out to be the idea when I arrived on the set. They'd written a whole different movie than the one [initially discussed]. And the special-effects guys got it and got their hands on it. And it was just not the same movie. There were a few great scenes in it, but it wasn't the same movie. So there's never been an interest in a third Ghostbusters, because the second one was kind of disappointing ... for me, anyway.'
So it could be the time since the sequel has been long enough. As usual though it will lie with the script. And after the first sequel, Murray probably won't be involved unless it's spot on. Do you agree with him on Ghostbusters 2? Are you only interested in a sequel that will better it?
